A power steering pump replacement should be a relatively easy, straight forward effort. Audi didn't see it that way.
Jonny's long time customer needed the pump replaced in his 2012 Audi A8 and he needed it done quickly for a trip the following day.
For the sake of time the customer sourced a used pump and brought it in.
Jonny had never done this job on this model before but he knew it wasn't going to be easy.

I am the original owner of my 2015 Audi S3 with over 180,000 miles on it. Did 99% of the work on the car myself. There are some days that i dream of owning an RS5, an S6 or some other "higher end" model. But then i see videos like this where you need to remove tons of drivetrain components to fix simple things, and reality hits. I'm going to give my S3 a big hug after this video !

And we all know that’s not the only thing on these cars that require a full front clip removal that can be serviced on other cars in two hours, even in this video, he mentioned the power steering rack has to come out to change the control alarm It would be one thing If they where super reliable but even basic things fail. Well, apart from guessing where to put the engine support, and it doesn't look like there's any cushion (rubber, wood etc) between the screw jack and the engine's sump. I wouldn't want dents or scratches on a painted sump that later on, may rust because of that lost paint.

"Oh look, I can buy an Audi A8 on BAT for cheap. Then I can work on it in my driveway. All that luxury for a low price. Perfect !". This video dispels a lot of myths. Years of experience; all the tools; a car lift. And even then, it's 8 straight hours on your feet, working overhead, 2 man job at times. Stressed about not breaking anything when you're moving it out of the way. And the pressure of getting it right first time, every time. (And then the owner chooses to put in a used part for a wear item. The mind boggles ... ). Johnny, you earned your money on this one and no mistake. Great videography as always. @Beer_Dad1975
@Beer_Dad1975 Жыл бұрын
@@groosbro1 Yeah they aren't all built this way, it's the Germans - they don't give a toss about long term reliability or repar-ability, they want you to replace the car every 3-5 years so no effort is put in to engineering to last. Audi, actually the whole VAG group - are the worst for it & often don't even stock parts for models for long after they become obsolete - the guy probably bought a second hand pump for this A8 either because Audi don't stock them any more now the car is 10 years old, or they are so insanely expensive that it makes the repair financially untenable if you use a new pump. Assholes, the lot of them.

I have a 2008 Audi Allroad 3,0 TDI here in Latvia - and currently, the steering rack is leaking. Before that, there was a tiny leak on the hydraulic fluid reservoir (which is EXACTLY the same part as on this A8). I bought a used reservoir for EUR 15,00 - washed and blew it with air several times for about an hour - but apparantly, even that didn't wash it completely out of old fluid. So I put it on the car and filled back up with original Febi green liquid - in one week, my steering rack started to leak like crazy (never had any problems with it before). So now I've bought a new/refurbished steering rack from DRI Automotive (EUR 300), a new steering pump from JP Group (EUR 80 - but similar prices are available in a scope of +- 30 EUROS from Meyle, Bosch, etc) - a new reservoir again (this time completely new for EUR 28 during the black friday deals) and new hoses from Metzger and AIC to and from the rack (EUR 120 in total). In addition - the low pressure hoses to and from the heat-exchanger will also have to be replaced (will go for aftermarket silicone transparent ones - just to be able so see what flows inside of them). As I'll do the work myself, I consider to have survived the ordeal rather easily/cheaply. All the system will have to be replaced - just because of the crap that I thought I washed out - but apparently, didn''t - from the used reservoir. The complete front of the vehicle needs to come off to do the job (the pump is driven by the belt, not by the axle/differential as on this car). LONG STORY SHORT - I would highly advise the owner not to FAFF AROUND and spend the extra 100 dollars - and buy a new steering pump. Unless he wants to spend again - and spend more. Greetings from Latvia, good luck.

Audi Engineer: "A decision was taken that the power steering pump should be installed onto the engine prior to installing the engine and transmission assembly into the chassis, in order to save approximately $0.07 per unit across the production run. At no point was this questioned prior to assembly of the initial production line test mules, and so there was no opportunity to examine the serviceability of the component before programmatic inertia made it impossible to alter the configuration."

Before the BMW fan bois chime in saying “just do your regular maintenance and it’ll be fine” NO! Regular maintenance shouldn’t include chasing and replacing all the leaking and cracking plastic parts in your engine bay, nor should it include dropping the engine to replace a water pump!

A friend of mine had a V8 A8, and ran it for twelve months. It was like getting a wish out of his system. It WAS a lovely car to ride in, but it cost a fortune over twelve months so that having passed its UK MOT he sold it for not a small loss. He has a small Peugeot now. The Audi was eight years old, and Pug was two years older and has run faultlessly for eighteen months since the change. Was the last simple quality car the Volvo 240? I had two of those. Okay that petrol was like mother's milk to them, but otherwise repairs were infrequent, easily done [so garage labour not a catastrophe] and the parts were no more than Ford or GM. Nowadays there are no easy to work on cars! Best wishes from George

The shop can pay for a shop heater or air-con unit. If we want to buy a nice bent wrench, that is on the individual tech. I won't get into a long list of what is special to the tech and a must-have for the shop, thanks for the video.
