Or how many roads go left, right, left right, etc? Most roads are straights with roundabouts or turns at each end. Most people don't go way over 150mph all the time. On the road bikes almost always blast cars away with ease regardless of rider.

hung huge Also how many £100k+ supercars do you see everyday? Then look at the percentage of bikes that have a load of power. A lot of the time the latest sportbike is the best selling bike each year (or was until recently).

Go back a few years and you'll see a very different story. If someone is buying a bike with a bit of performance it will usually have a lot. The only places commuters/scooters are popular is offices and people on restricted licenses.
@2002RM
@2002RM 9 жыл бұрын
I'm sorry but that's rubbish. look at the stats in most populated urban countries (i.e. where there are more people) and you'll find commuter always sell in higher numbers. In Britain the most popular 'new' bike sales are adventure tourers - e.g. BMW GS's, Triumph Explorers etc. It has pretty much been this way for a very long time. Focussed sports bikes may have a good markup but have always sold in relatively smaller numbers than the Sports Adventure / Commuter segments of the market.

As a biker I have to say though. I would get closer to the car's time in the car than I would get to Neil's time on a 1199 Panigale. Riding a bike like that is a mixture of skill, art and absolute balls out bravery. The way it was threating to highside him out the corners on to the main straight shows how hard he was riding. Before anyone starts I'm not saying driving doesnt take the afforementioned art skill bravery combo but anyone who has ridden a bike knows that there much more to cornering a bike than there is a car at the level these two guys are at. Good video this. Im actually surprised the ducati won but I think that was down more to Neil wringing its bloody neck.

I have a feeling that Ducati wasn't tuned for this track. Suspension in motorcycles is 10 times more important than in cars due to the crashing factor. I saw the forks almost bottom out, some weird wobbles, and a lot of other stuff that shouldn't happen with a balanced bike

Here is a race car driver almost looking bored driving a super car and Neil having a blast on a street bike, after years of competing with some of the best race bikes in the world. The Audi link matters because they've tried to link all of the pairings in some way. The Morgan was paired with its rival because they were both BMW-powered. It's an anorak way of thinking, sure, but as someone that's wanted to own a CBR600RR and S2000 (both black) I can't fault them.

that bike looked a right handful! even in an experienced guy's hands like that. It could do with a revised suspension. a few times I saw the suspension compress to 98% any more and it would have dropped him. by washing the front end he was so lucky Thanks for going back to this format. doing the twin side by side comparison is terrible. you get no sounds and you dont get the laps and driver talk before hand

All the journalists and even professional riders say the Panigale is a handful, a very difficult bike to drive. And the engine makes it worse on the slower, technical parts as it doesn't have that much bottom end torque like the previous Ducatis had. I believe a S1000 or RSV4 would be even faster around here. As for the suspension, you're right, the fork was almost bottoming out, it needed some fiddling about. He could have shaved more time with the perfect set up for his weight/this track. This one has the electronic suspension, so it doesn't need spanners to tune. But on the other hand, this track is technical and bumpy, so he might have chosen a soft suspension setting to make it easier to handle.
@2002RM
@2002RM 9 жыл бұрын
Rubbish! Lol, know your bikes! You cannot see a suspension compress "98%" in this video. Also the reason it looked a handful was because Hodgson, like the rest of those "old skool" x racers are still trying to prove they can do it without the tech (e.g. traction control off, ABS off, but I bet wheelie control was still on though). Even the motogp guys rely heavily on the electronic package these days because this is the FASTEST way to go when the bike is properly set up. Also, if this is the first time Hodgson has done this track then you'd need to set the bike up to extract the most from it. But the Pani does have dynamic suspension, IF the rider chooses to use it. But again, I'm guessing Hodgson just chose a baseline & turned off all the electronics. In any case, he was at more risk of Highsiding than washing out because that track was way too bumpy to reach the end of the springs.
@Ktmzqw
@Ktmzqw 9 жыл бұрын
2002RM But he did almost bottom out the fork, maybe 90%. They're supposed to top at what, 75, 80%? As for his riding, Hodgson was clearly showing off. A tidier ride and a sorted suspension setup and the bike would be even faster.
@2002RM
@2002RM 9 жыл бұрын
Depending on the spring weight of course, a fork can bottom. But sportsbike forks are essentially progressive in nature and most contain a top out spring. Even if it was set soft, you'd need to do stoppies from speed to get it to bottom (and even then that last bit of travel would be extremely compressed).

After driving cars since the early 80s, I decided I wanted to see for myself what bikes were all about (this was about 4 years ago.) I took my unrestricted test, passed first time and bought myself a Honda Hornet 600f. After about a year I hung up my helmet because I just didn't feel safe. Knowing that if I came off I could be killed or seriously injured just dissolved any fun I was experiencing. I did come off on a slippery road surface on my 125 while learning. This is going to sound ridiculous but you don't realise how hard the road is until you hit it. There's no give in tarmac so all the shock goes into your body. I tried to overcome my fear but it was always on my mind. Even if I didn't make a mistake a car could smash into me and put me in the morgue. I realised I'm not a biker so I sold everything. Watching this guy fight that Ducati brings me out in a cold sweat. Yes the car driver is talented but those bikers are something else. It really does take more bottle to ride a motorbike...MUCH more.

I think this video rectifies one oversight in the previous videos; they never presented the view of the bike rider. It's really great to hear Neil commenting about the track as he rides along, as well as after. I remember him doing this on a racetrack before and he does a superb job here, bike wiggling beneath him and all; well done Neil!!!! I hope EVO keeps this format in the upcoming videos where the rider also talks about his experiences. Now, I think the car was a bit outclassed , a Ferrari 458 Speciale may have been more appropriate, not a criticism mind you, I loved the video...

Really really good video Evo. Skilled driver and rider. Was nice watching both machines being pushed to the limit. Damn that Panigale lap looked lairy! And guys, can't we stop this useless debate? Shouldn't you include the driver when talking about the power to weight ratio of a bike. The 1570 kg for the R8 is without fuel or a driver (1670 kg with the tank filled to 90% and a 75kg driver) but adding a driver to the bikes weight has a much bigger impact.

Previous battles were actually quite even in terms of performance and they were enjoyable because of that... This time the bike was obviously much faster than the car so no surprise... If you use top superbikes, then use top supercars also (650S/ Speciale)!
@DoubleYouPee1
@DoubleYouPee1 9 жыл бұрын
Actually this is the first one that is even. The previous one with the BMW Nine T was just awful, picking a non-sports bike with 0 ground clearance against a sports car on a track... Not to mention in this battle the car even had an advantage with all the gravel .. and the panigale was struggling with suspension setup seeing how it wobbled. A S1000RR Hp4 would probably be even faster around here.
@CarloDelucis
@CarloDelucis 9 жыл бұрын
DoubleYouPee1 To be honest, I'm no bike enthusiast so the results of previous battles were quite a surprise for me... This time round, the bike was clearly going to win as it is among the fastest bikes around while the R8, even in V10 Plus spec, is undoubtly slower compared to all latest supercars... The "gravel issue" is simply part of the minor traction of a bike compared to a car so you can't really complain about that...
@LilleyAdam
@LilleyAdam 9 жыл бұрын
CarloDelucis Sure, it's a fast bike but it's really only one of the fastest around if the only colour you can see is red (that's ducati trashtalking). It's quite even really. Neither the best of the best, but both very good.
@DoubleYouPee1
@DoubleYouPee1 9 жыл бұрын
It's not about traction but the fact that you can't really cut the corners going over gravel with the bike. It's a lot easier and and safer with a car where you won't crash into the ground when you lose too much grip on the gravel. Also the car still has two tyres on the track. I don't see how this is unfair. It's a €25000 bike with bad suspension setup and gravel in the corners vs a €200000+ supercar. (in fact more than €250000 here in Europe). You want a 1 million euro LaFerrari to call it fair?

For anyone interested, I crunched a few numbers to get more relevant power to weight ratios factoring in the personal weights of the driver and rider at 72 and 76kg respectively since a rider (which, of course, is a necessity) has a greater effect on the weight than compared to a driver in a car. So based on the weight and power provided in the video here it is in imperial: -Power/weight (advantage 1199: 59%) R8: 295hp/ton 1199: 713hp/ton -Torque/weight (advantage 1199: 32%) R8: 216lbft/ton 1199: 319lbft/ton
@bezetuba

Yes exactly! It's important to add rider weight + gear (~7kg). Also rider build (height, width) will influence aerodynamics quite significantly, impacting performance at high speed ~240+km/h

That superbike champion can be EVO host too. I can't imagine how it's hard to ride a bike at the limit and talk like this. Great work And yes, i can't english Sorry

99.999% would be at least 2 secs slower round there. Neil is sliding that thing all over the place. Ridiculous power!

it makes more sense to get two guys who are/were at the top of their game to make it evenly matched with both being world champions

Shouldnt you guys compare machines that are a match to each other? I mean, the panigale R is the R version, the most radical and almost 100% race focused...against a normal R8 V10! 2 seconds faster on a 1 minute track is an eternity, the bike murdered the car obviously.. Maybe do it one more time against a V10 Plus or 458 Speciale or GT3 or 650S...i dont know Just my humble opinion :) Nice vid btw

Look on "fastestlaps" websiste for Blyton park. They have a list of documented laps [mostly from Evo videos] Keep in mind that the Ducati lap is a 1:01.36. ;]

Sorry but the Panigale R is a street bike. It's the basis of Ducati's SBK racing platform but only in that it has four titanium valves (compared to two) and titanium con rods. It is otherwise identical to a Panigale S. The Panigale RS is the 100% race focused bike you were speaking about.

This was a great race, a sports car against a sports bike and I thought the car did very well in the capable hands of that driver, but as always the bike's incredible power to weight allowed it to gallop down the back straight, dunno what car you'd need to even get close to it, lot of people mentioning the HP2 would be faster, maybe it would but you'd need another hodgson to tame it, and maybe a second faster, great race great conditions.

I'm always skeptical when magazines bring in racing drivers for their track tests. They're generally not as interesting to watch/listen to and you end up with a staid voice-over, but this was surprisingly entertaining and insightful. Although I still prefer Meaden or Bovingdon doing the video, this was nice for a change. Also, I don't know anything about bikes, but it looked awfully wobbly. That can't right, can it?
