Not just a hero in battle, but in how he brought attention to PTSD for the sake of all who suffered from it. Because of his efforts to bring this illness to light, many veterans after him have had better treatment and understanding not only in the VA medical system, but in the general public. This also helped civilians as PTSD affects more than just combat veterans. Everything he set out to do, he did it with honor and diligence to excellence. SALUTE!! ❤️🇺🇸

I was in the Army. I'm Infantry. I was in basic in 1984. Drill Sgts. told us, "No firing from the hip unless your name is Rambo, John Wayne or Audie Murphy." Todays recruits probably don't know the last 2 names.

An interesting side note: C.M.O.H recipients usually have the lettering on their Headstones in Gold. Per Murphy's request years earlier,he stated he did NOT want his Headstone to be 'Different' than any other Soldier,Sailor,Airman or Marine. He also stated on many occasions that he did not consider himself as being a Hero.....that to him, 'The Real Heroes lie under those Crosses'.

I saw To Hell and Back in the 80s and many times over the years till 2023, literally found out today, he played himself.....😂 I knew him went into acting but didn't realise it was him... this is why some life stories have to be dumbed down. Who would ever believe his....

He was from North Texas, not too far from Dallas.

He was born in Kingston Texas, it’s a part of Greenville. My Aunt knew him but not personally but went to school with him in Greenville Tx. At that time everyone knew everyone. He had, I don’t know how many but some of his siblings went to Boles Home when his mother died, that’s near Quinlan. I remember some kind of ceremony was held in his honor after he had died in the court house square in downtown Greenville, I remember seeing his widow. There was a lot of people there. There’s a big statue of him on I-30 just north of Greenville.

His plane crash happened on my great grandmother land. The family was outside and they heard and the boys went up the mountain here in VA. My Papa got to crash and knew he couldn't be saved

It normally refers to how many military awards were given or awarded to someone. 😊 so yes, I guess that might also make them appear to be the most “decorated “ when considering medals. 😉

Its very kind of you to bring this soldiers life to the table. Although im not American i have always felt that as a society we lack the education that is needed to tell us who certain people are. Such as this man. We receive cures for disease from Big Pharma, but who there discovered what was needed to create tge cure. I applaud you. Much Respect.
