Just the first 51 seconds of this video were a real eye-opener for me. The idea that you can demonstrate capacitive and inductive reactance in a physical domain has made me more comfortable with the concepts purely in an electronic domain.

Long ago I was an electronics technician in the military. I learned about RADAR waveguides as transmission lines and calculated reactance, capacitance and inductance in them as part of my education. It has never occurred to me that the same principles apply to acoustic frequencies. Very interesting. And, yes, I feel sick now. It helped a bit when I reduced the video window to a small corner of the monitor and watched from across the room.

Great video! Could you touch on things like port and subwoofer positioning to control cone displacement within the chamber, maybe touch a little bit on the fluid dynamics within the chambers or port. Why compression in aero ports functions better over slot ports for example, or some information on the acoustical relationship between amp and sub, dampening, how impedance functions in a relation to cone displacement the order of enclosure etc. It would be great to hear some thoughts in series/paralleling or vicecersa or combination down multiple drivers and how best to acheive balance of resistance between all drivers and how an amplifier internaly copes with impedance changes over frequency. Keep it up mate good to see you back on making videos!

it's great to understand the design characteristics that define each order. how about a part 2 that gives everyone a clue as to WHY one would use one design over another. Please do this on Hexi Base. Oh BTW you did not mention Open baffle (it is different than the theoretical infinite baffle) and the Bi-polar (no I don't mean crazy) design - I think it might be a form of Isobaric loading. last but not least. there is the wonderful Maggi. (Magnaplanar) I suppose that's effectively an OB design?Awesome channel Thumbs up on almost every thing you do.The "Matt Scientist"

6th order parallel bandpass is my favorite. I made it so the ports where next to each other. Slot ports and sub faced inverted motor up, dust cap chamber had a long 2.5" port thatwent along back wall and cornered along the top out the front, the coil chamber was 3" and was a U shape below dustcap port. Sub is a Memphis Audio HPO 15D4 @2ohms on a Crunch DRA850.2 not sure rms watts.

G'day Pete, Reporting as directed... Fascinating, I had no idea that this was going on...; let me guess - your Grandfather was a Woodworker living in a Forest, cleverly carving & whittling those little Nesting Dolls for which Tourists love to pay lots of money ? This-all makes the crude "Speakerboxes" which I carefully cobbled-up as a teenager, with Speakers salvaged from old Televisions & the Amplifier-Circuit from a Record-Player....; even more hopelessly shitty, technically speaking, than I remember realising them to have been - ten years after I built them when I was trying to sell Bang & Olufsen Hi Fi in North Sydney...(!). Have a good one, ;-p Ciao !

When I was a late teen.. We had gotten a hold of a box for a 10" sub that they called a "hidden chamber".. That little 10 got loud.. at least for the fact it was just a single 10 on like 100 watts. I never seen a box made like that since, until today in your sketch up of a 6th order bass reflex. I wonder what the gains look like on those??

HexiBase Thanks for the reply. I know it wouldn't change change the acoustic order, but depending on design it could change the parameters of individual drivers in a multiple driver configuration, right? Like exocontralto's Frankenstein build that he is about to dismantle to create a new build. By multiple vents do you mean two vents in parallel or cascading (parallel seems simple, but sequential ports are more than i know how to do), aka vented 4th vs bandpass 4th? The types of reactance and how they differ in end effect is something I can't say I understand truly. Theory and practicality are different but you seem to be one of the more knowledgeable KZfaq audio guys on how both work together and therefore can get the results you desired. Btw I miss your vids on Hexibase.

Thanks for the info & bob Ross white board drawings 🔥 Can you elaborate more on the difference between the 4th/ 6th / 8th series and parallel bandpass? And how the ratio affects size and tuning ? Does Audio Dynamics have high sensitivity subs with good frequency response with decent Xmax and FS of 30-35? I am looking for one or two subs that will like 1500 W RMS. My Q40 ( G37 ) has a metal wall separating trunk and cabin with a ski pass thru only. What would you recommend for best frequency response and output enclosure and sub wise?

If we're to take this video as gospel, you'd have to find some arrangement of the orders such that at least one side of the speaker has a path to the outside world. Hopefully I've understood this right: 5th order: 1st: separation. Put it in a sealed box, that's 2nd due to capacitance. Add a port, thats 4th because 3rd is inductive, 4th is reactive. Put a box around the port, that replaces reactive with capacitive. Then put a transmission line over the front of the driver, which is inductive, that's 5th order. 7th order: This is a little complicated to imagine... But I'll try it anyway. 1st: separation, 2nd sealed box, sealed box on the other side with a port, we're up to 4th. Sealed chamber after the port, that's 5, but both sides of the sub are now closed, so add a port to the first sealed box, we're up to 6... Then the only way to add a 7th is via induction, so make a long, wide port (transmission line) after the port you just made. 9th order: Just insane. Take the exact same thing as 7th, but the only sealed box you have, put a port in it. That adds 8th, inductive, and 9th, reactive with the front and back wave. If you're struggling to visualise it, I made an image in paint lmao. i.imgur.com/9fT65IL.png Hope this helps! :D

Hi. really good explaination, I understood everything, but I have 2 questions. First: In WinISD it is possible to simulate "ABC" enclosures (like a series-tuned 6th order bandpass + port out the rear chamber too like on the parallel one). It is an 8th order enclosure, or it needs to count the acoustic orders differently somehow? If I understood correctly your presentation, let's start with the 6th order series tuned bandpass, then + port outside the rear chamber = inductive reactance which brings it up to 7th + interaction = 8th? Second: I know that passive radiator is basically a port = inductive reactance. I had a Philips HiFi which have the "wOOx" speakers (I dont remember the model number now...). On the front side of the speaker were the active woofer and the passive radiator (wOOx woofer), on the rear side was a regular flared aeroport. If I am correct, the passive radiator was tuned for the low bass and the regular port for the higher bass (the port was short + the enclosure itself was not too big for the woofer's size), but I am not sure that I understood this sepeaker system correctly, because one chambered enclosure with two tunings is strange for me. So how I should count acoustic orders at an enclosure like this Philips wOOx?

@@Digital__rb Don't take my word as fact, i am just getting into this too, but logically it would still be a 4th order bass reflex. Two ports in parallel with a cross section of _A_ should behave equal to a single port with the cross section of 2 * _A_

Ok I'm going to go old school here. Back in the day we quite often ran an entire system off of 1 two channel amp, the nicer amps were capable of 'tri-mode', highs in stereo and your sub(s) bridged mono, because of this setup we had passive crossover networks. For a while I ran a 6th order parallel tuned bandpass, but because of the coil (inductor), it was considered a 7th order bandpass. How does an inductor fit in when calculating orders?

Now I undestand what means "3rd order". So now I have a strange idea, maybe it is totally wrong idea, but let me explain it first: 1.: simulate for a woofer the Vb and Fb simply like at a standard vented box (4th order bass-reflex), 2.: add all the displacements to the Vb, just the port's displacement do not add, 3.: design a tube-box with that volume which have the same internal diameter like the woofer's cutout diameter and outer diameter like the woofer's total diameter (or bigger - just to be able to install the woofer correctly into the box), 4.: design the port (length) for that woofer / Vb / Fb using the same internal and outer diameter like at the box, 5.: now, we know the port's and the box's internal and outer diameter, the port's length, and the total internal box-volume (Vb + displacemets), so the box length can be determined, 6.: make a tube with these internal and outer diameters, and tube length = box length + port length. So this tube will look like the drawing in the presentation, but in real world this will be not usable because of the huge length, only if you make a labyrinth of that. My question is: this will work like a 3rd order, or a 4th order, or it will work well anyways? Btw, sorry for my bad english
