Once, when I took part in an outreach program to help young and adult orphans read and understand simple vocabularies and phrases (i.e., I ate an apple, the sky is blue, my hands are dirty, etc.) I remember having the children mimic what I said multiple times so that they would memorize it. Back then, I was not one to think of how I taught them the language as long as I did my job properly. But now that I think of it, this approach is faulty in many ways because beginning language learners are forced to acquire language with very little to no context. The children in the orphanage did not understand even the basic vocabulary and phrases, and audiolingualism would do very little for them to acquire a new language because of the lacking explicit analogies it offers.
