To get the "gray boxes", click the tiny arrow at the top left corner of the audio track mixer (if you hover above it it will say "Show/Hides Effects and Sends"). By double clicking you can edit the effect like in effect controls.

This is 3 years later, but this is the best/quickest video on this topic. I've seen others, and they go too deep into things the average person doesn't need to know (It's great that they exist for those wanting to learn more). Often we just need a quick answer so we can keep editing. Well done sir!

Also if you have several audio clips on different audio tracks (let's say A1 and A2), you can create an audio submix track (in Sequence -> Add Tracks). Then from the audio track mixer you can redirect A1 and A2 to your submix (click on "Master" above the circles of A1 and A2 and select "submix 1") and be able to use the multiband compressor on it so that it affects all the tracks at once and not separately.

I have a 45 minute live presentation where the speaker was all over the place. I had a lavalier on her so I had a good signal, but smoothing out the volumes was going to be a keyframe frenzy just like you said in the beginning. This technique will save me probably 2 hours today!!! Thanks again for another greta tutorial, Josh.
