Just listened using the HD800S through a proper headphone amp... what a difference between cartridges... The Denon picks up way more clicks/noise; I expected it to be the other way around, since Shibata tend to be more sensitive to noise in general. The funny thing is that the Denon has its soundstage partly panned to the right - especially mids and highs are much louder on that side. Normally I'd say that it's just baked into the mastering/pressing of a record, since that's not too uncommon. But the soundstage of the AT33SA is properly centered, so there's definitely something funny going on with the Denon itself or its settings...

AT33Sa has wider soundstage and much better instrument definition also more musical information with a pleasant smooth silky presentation compared to the DL103. Dammit, now I want an AT33Sa ...

Yeah that smooth silky presentation is typical for Shibata styli. I'm more into microline/microridge, but the Shibata sound has it's appeal from time to time. Especially with this kind of music... fits well with that Shibata sound.

@@QoraxAudio ML styli provide too much surface noise and I would rather have less surface noise than more detail when the 33EVs sound amazingly detailed already.
@QoraxAudio
@QoraxAudio Жыл бұрын
@@DJWolves97 Yes, the ML styli are very sensitive to that, however, if you play used records, the ML are sometimes able to go down deeper into the grooves than the stylus of the previous owner went, where some records are still free of wear. It really varies from record to record. But yeah... those ellipticals tend to have less surface noise issues in general, but at the cost of increased IGD... In the end it's all a trade-off one way or another, that's why I'm switching between cartridges continuously.

Hey 6 in the morning what another FANTASTIC video(man I love your way of presenting a video!). Your opinion/assessment of the "33" is fairly close to my own opinion. Where we differ is the difficulty to fit & align the cartridge it is EASIER with the bottom plate screwed off,as you get to view the cantilever more for correct alignment. All the positives you stated about the "33" I to share those thoughts,it is a marvelous cartridge & a great buy. I also own TWO Denon 103`s a "standard 103r" that sits in a aftermarket metal cap,& a "Retipped 103" with a Nude Shibata tip attached to a boron cantilever in a metal cap(I have a weakness for cartridges!). I find that the 103`s may not be as "bass heavy" BUT give a MORE realistic sound reproduction without the exaggerated lowend/bass. They exhibit more detail retrieval on my tonearm (Rega RB330/880) & turntable,even in this video I personally prefer the detail retrieval on the 103(I know I`ll be in the minority),but unless we use "full range" speakers that "bass" could be distortion that we`re hearing/feeling could it not? To be fair I haven`t used them for quite a while as I`m using my Goldring G1042/06 at the moment,so I may just mount them sometime soon to update my opinions. PS. Tommy Guerrero "Sunshine Radio" LP sounds gorgeous I may have to purchase that & there was one more thinggg....... ah yes your 103,it would`ve been a fairer fight (for others) if your 103 had one of the "higher" grade stylus tips from your link on it "hyperelliptical" & especially "microridge" are in the same advance stylie tip category as shibata. Keep the tasty videos coming please,it's another thumbs up from me!!

I have the Denon DL103 and 103r. It needs to be heard through a good step up transformer. I use a Quicksilver step up and phono stage and it sounds incredible. The Denon cartridges 103 103r are the two cartridges I consider my greatest bargains. I have AT cartridges not mc all mm and after a short period of time listening they are fatiguing. The Denon is up front forceful and dynamic but I can listen to them endlessly no listener fatigue.

Great track from TG. I really like the Audio Technica nude shibata/boron cantilever sound. I have several AT cartridges in that camp. I haven’t really heard the DL103 but the set up treatment with the headshell weight might need to go further. The resistor loading is also important. Many people use a step up transformer with it. Both cartridges were great value and The AT had more to offer from the recording. It would be interesting to find out what it takes to maximise a DL103, since so many people swear by it.

I tryed some good headphones but sadly the KZfaq audio codex don't give the sound justice but can have clue that the at33 is brilliant sounding device, the denon 103 apparently is something to consider, however have a denon dl-110 high output with nice quality sound. Funny the last months haven't use any of my Mm cartridges just my 2 Mc cartridges apparently there's no why back to MM cartridges, hehe

Hello, good Video. But one correction: The JMW-Tonearm of the Scout is not heavy enough for the Denon DL 103. So I sold my Scout 1.1. And I bought the new DENON DP 3000 NE with removable Headshell. Now i use for 103 a heavy Headshell (Ortofon LH 4000, 14 grams) and an extra heavy Counterweight. Und what happened? The 103 Standard with spherical Needle sounds greater than before. More bass, cleaner mids and high frequencies. Huge performance.

I also own the Denon Dp3000ne and my new Denon dl-103. Excellent table. I have not had to use the heavier counterweight yet, and I have the same ortofon headshell, but it's on my Hana ML. I'm using the factory Denon headshell, with the 103, and it's been great. The 103 is far more musical with greater bass output than I could have imagined. I only have 6 hours on it, if that as I got it yesterday.

Guitar on the Denon sounds more controlled and "real", but the instrument placement is better on the AT33 (also sounds like that Shibata stylus is adding some harshness? I have never been a fan of Shibata styli, should have died away along with 4-channel records 😀). Seems each cartridge has its own strong points!

Somebody says at33 suspension falls apart quite quickly they had it for six months and had to be replaced it, have you found that? If you play your records damp, get a atomizer bottle and use dionised water the diamond will not lose its polish and last forever. Just get a piece of blotting paper you can use it on top of your mat or just place it on there for a few seconds when turning the record over before putting it away adding a piece of aluminium to the Denon I can't see any benefit you don't be any wanna make it heavier why? It might sound nice in a wooden body has anybody tried it and have any read tips could have changed its characteristics what tip stylie did you have put on and cantilever? You can get a micro line nude diamond and Sapphire cantilever put on for about 300 dollars

I have not had any suspension issues. I don't know how many hours I have on it, but it's still going strong. I wonder if he was running it with a high tracking force? There are a bunch of mods for the Denon in terms of the housing and adding mass. I can't say that any of it does anything with the hassle.

According to this recording, I wouldn't say that DL-103 lack's bass. It is missleading that the soundstage is narower with DL-103, it seems that it organises instruments on stage in different way. Some instruments are more on the left side with AT then with dhe Denon, but Denon makes other sounds more toward the right side. Such things can be made also with cartridge and tonearm alignment. Tonally, I don't hve a strong preference either. They are different tonaly with Denon sounding more lush and AT more precise, maybe more transparent. In the end, yes AT could sound as a costlier cartridge it is, but Denon is no looser here either. Listen to your self and ask yourself not which sounds better, but with wich you feel the music better. Soundstage and transparency and pletora other hi-fi terms and expressions wont make you closer to the feeling that music can bring to your bones. If I should choose between the two, I think I would take Denon and made it sing closer to AT with alignment and loading on SUT because I find it's fullness and palpability in sound more to my likings. About loading, forget almost everything someone else think it should be. Buy a 100k linear stereo pot, put it across GND and live on SUT's secondary winding and find your prefered sound signature with it. Once you are satisfied, measure it, buy some metal film resistors in that ballpark (or whatever boutique megabuck resistors you prefere) and call it a day. You might be surprised how much your ears, setup, room and taste differs from others when you see the loading you find the best. ;)

The mass is now totally unproportionate by simply adding weight to the cartridge itself. Kind of like putting a weight at the end of a balance instead of spreading throughout. The result is very different. But ok.

Just a few days ago I was “burned” with a more then 1000$ cartridge after less then 100 hours use, the sound became distorted and the manufacturer send me to a dealer which offer me an alternative cartridge at a cost of almost anew one so my firm advise is to buy from a manufacturer that offer repairs or replacement at a low cost at all costs, don’t fall for this industry’s bottom less pit of never ending expenses. Ps, the AT has alife span of 1000 hours, what happens when it rams out?
