Written in the years 1840 to 1841, when Dickens was twenty-eight years old, this is a ‘Road’ tale in the very best tradition. Little Nell Trent and her Grandfather are the main characters, who secretly set off from their home under cover of night, to escape the wicked dwarf Quilp. Pursued across England, their adventures lead them through poverty stricken city areas where several destitute people offer them aid on their way, into the countryside where they meet the strange, colorful, and sometimes menacing characters for which Dickens is so well known.

Wonderful reading. We are lucky to have a professional reader make this available without charge. And thank you muchly to the person who edited out all the 'This is a librivox recording....' It must have been tiresome, but so improves the flow. And II read this for the fun of it, not because of a school assignment !

Thanks. So many people go like "OMG this channel is stealing this from Librivox!"... as if all the work of editing, cleaning up noise, marking chapters, getting a nice cover, etc, means nothing.

Well. That's a first! Gollum (the evil Quilp)makes an appearance in a Dickens novel. I have been totally enraptured by this one, especially by the narration. (PRECIOUSSSS 💍)😅an amazing grasp of the old English or how I've always imagined it helped by the famous films such eg Oliver and Great expectations. THANX.

My only complaint would fall to the fact of Dickens choosing to call one character "the bachelor" and another character "the single man" and I get confused between the two. Mil did a great job of narrating, and her different character voices are superb. And she did an especially great job with the lines after Mr. Brass drank the boiling rum and was coughing and spluttering at the heat and strength of it.

11:51:30 hrs - 11:54:15 hrs "And man has his love of home from God. And if those who rule the destiny of nations would remember this... In love of home, love of country has its rise, and who are the truer patriots for the better in time of need? those who venerate the land owning all they produce or those who love their country boasting not a foot of ground in all its wide domain?" Quite Brexit really, and not a little Sir Roger Scruton? And "Love of home is where all domestic virtue springs.... etc etc". And there is much else to consider in this short passage.

It's hard to find a professional reader reading stories from Charles Dickens Jules Verne and other classic authors that are not flat. I got lucky with some audio books but with others I'm still searching. When you're reading to someone or are recording the reading you need to put some emotion into it and emphasize and if you're told that enough try to do voice. Pretend you're reading to a room full of Young children.

Excellent tale.....but I'll never understand a reader's passion for voice characterizations ( this particular reader is very talented ) has not the ability to make an easier effort of skipping over the identity of each and every quote be it one syllable or a long speech, what is the sense of multiple voices but for the reader's self indulgence.

Brilliant narration! Excellent dramatization of the characters. But what a waste of time and breath on such a childish novel! The plot is weak stuffed with a lot of nonsense, unnecessary digressions and tens of marginal characters that contribute little or nothing to the development of the story. No wonder, Dickens wrote it when he was only 28 years old. The novel bears the hallmark of an amateur.
@LadyIarConnacht

Keep in mind this wasn't written as a novel. This was released in 88 sections in a newspaper. The long and winding plot and silly characters were meant to entertain the readers, and to keep them in suspense, so that they would continue to buy the papers. Getting to the point quickly and efficiently would have run counter to purposes.
