The takeout of this very good interview is that you can standardize the technology, you can standardize testing and fitting, but audiologists can not standardize patients. So, a good practice audiology should do deviations from standards adjusted to individual needs if optimal hearing help should be achieved. I’m only a 75-yr recent patient but with life science background with advanced degree during my working years, so this the take for me from this Dr. Cliff interview. Probably too technical for many patients, but very interesting for me actually realizing the complexity of finding, texting and fitting the best HA for any individual (not the marketing foolishness, money-driven and exaggeration speculating about “the best” HA). The “Best HA” should be taken off the market as way to mislead patients, instead audiologists should be presenting on regular basis individual cases. Then the public can decide what HA to purchase based on their own similarity, or prescription with the reported hearing outcome. This will be more helpful than this profit-madness driving the wrong marketing of HA that misleads the general public about HA.

With holidays, and end-of-year time crunches I had to put this podcast into my Save To Watch Later. Now that I’m catching up, this episode about the progression from Guidelines (“SHOULD”), Standards (“SHALL” as consensus of essentials), to Best Practices (“SHALL BE PERMITTED” to EXCEED essentials) was fascinating, and applicable to ALL PROFESSIONS, not solely audiology or even solely medical. Great interview. It’s nice to know that the patient’s input is taken into consideration for optimal treatment outcome. Some days, it’s easy to focus on the 3% of the time when the fitting seems totally wrong and not the 97% of the time when things sound great. I am sure that I tend to focus in on the difficult times and wonder what is wrong with me. It takes time to get used to the ways things sound and determine your satisfaction with hearing aid performance. Good to know that there are reliable standards available in treatment.
