Hi Hans I'm very happy to have found you. I purchased your e-book and find it very informative. I have a question about streaming software, used with Raspberry Pi based streamers. The two software players I am aware of are are RuneAudio and Volumio. You are very knowledgeable about RuneAudio, but have you used Volumio. If so, which of the two would you recommend? Thanks for your help and I look forward to more of your great reviews.

+Brian Hallin Hi Brian, thanks for the compliments and for supporting my work by buying my book. I use bothe Volumio and RuneAudio when testing HAT boards for the Raspberry Pi. Essentially, for the user they work and sound the same. But sometimes one uses a more recent version of Linux, mpd and the other components these distributions are built with than the other. The best approach is to see what the manufacturer of the HAT board (DAC or SPDIF interface) advises. That will normally lead to easier installatie.

I am a little bit confused about your comments about the power supply. With a standard switching power supply this board cleans up the power so it still sounds good? But I could still add a connector that bypasses the switching to connect a linear power supply to power both the digipi and raspberrypi?

You can use a linear power supply just as you would with other RPi's with audio boards. The extra of this device is that it can enable a proper power down to avoid writing errors on the SD card. Just as with modern Windows computers. For the rest, all is the same as with other RPi's with audio boards - for as far as the power is concerned.

Dank je wel, Hans, voor je uitgebreide reviews. Ik ben ook aan het kijken voor een audio-oplossing in combinatie met de Pi. Graag zou ik een all-in-one media-oplossing willen in combinatie met Kodi bijvoorbeeld. Ik stel redelijk hoge eisen aan vooral audio, maar uiteraard wil ik ook graag DTS streams kunnen afspelen (nog geen TrueHD). Kun je mij advies geven wat voor mij zou kunnen werken en waarbij er geen (weinig) consessies worden gedaan aan de audiokwaliteit? Ik heb nu een aantal reviews van je bekeken, maar weet nog niet precies wat voor mij goed zou kunnen werken. Bij voorbaat hartelijk dank en ga vooral zo door zou ik zeggen!

As I say in every video, it is impossible for me to give personal advise. But combining music and video reproduction in one device isn't the easiest way to go.

Of course. I understand. I think the Pi in conjunction with the HifiBerry Digi+ (with the converter) should get me on track. This way I will have decent audio quality as well as the possibility to have DTS streams in films via de S/PDIF/Coax output of the Digi+. I just watched a video of you in which you discuss and review this combination. Thanks again!

I think you should give iFi iPower a chance. IMO it is a very clean power supply. Great video, btw! Regards!

Hi Hans I have a question that I assume would apply to any Raspberry Pi Streamer/DAC. I have used an 128GB SSD with the RasPi3/Digi+ transformer/ for my music, but I have found that the USB from the SSD can be unreliable without a separate 5v power supply for it. That increases the complexity and form-factor of a small system though. What about just using a 128GB MicroSD card that would be partitioned into two partitions, a 16GB for the OS & the remainder (about 112 GB) for music. Using RuneAudio or Volumio or Moode, can they be setup to get music from the MicroSD card? Thanks

I found a couple of posts on the RuneAudio forum that claim to accomplish this. I haven't done it, because I don't have a big enough MicroSD for my music, yet. Some familiarity with linux would be helpful. Of course, if one is already using RuneAudio, that would probably be the case. www.runeaudio.com/forum/uploading-tracks-via-fts-sftp-t682.html#p4351

I have not experienced with this but it might be that the SD card is slower and has other negative behaviors than even en 2.5 inch hard disk. I vaguely seem to remember remarks in this direction but can't recall why. But then again there might large differences between all classes of SD cards.

+dimitris maris My video is in English;-) Inside is a normal Raspberry Pi 2B with a board on top that provides the SPDIF conversion. So, yes, it has a Micro SD card and - at least in theory - should possible to install Roon Bridge on it. I didn't yet try this, though.
