Welcome to Bad Gear, the show about the world's most hated audio tools. Today we are going to talk about the Akai MPC ONE. Is this groovebox, music production platform and successor to legendary instruments like the Akai MPC 60 and MPC 2000 and sibling to the more upscale models Akai MPC Live and Akai MPC X on par with its competitors like the Elektron Octatrack and even software solutions like Ableton Live or FL Studio? Is it NPC ONE???

Hmzzz, I hope AudioPilz has experience in running from angry lynch mobs, but of course, it could be worse. He could also grab a 3K and designate that bad gear 😂. But samplers of all kinds have convoluted workflows, especially if they wanna be an "eierlegendewolmilchsau" as the new generation of MPCs so desperately wants to be. Personally, I don't bother with them too much. If it's a DIAB, my box is a 12 Gb laptop soon to be replaced by 64 Gb machine. Run the software, add a silver Studio controller, and go F them all. Still convoluted but with more options to fiddle with (in my case, including the Cremona Quartet). And as an ICT drop-out, I've spent enough time behind a screen not to be bothered by them at all. Unless they are touchscreens, then I hate them with a passion.

Also more or less true of using an ancient DAW on an ancient OS. A DOS box with Cakewalk, an Atari with KCS Omega, an OS 9 Mac with Studio Vision Pro. Software can finally be be reliable once it's "dead" and you never update it again, and you are free to bask in that sweet workflow. Obsolete systems can be productive as they have loads of abandonware and none of the distraction.

But the MPC *is* a DAW, so I would not count this as "DAWless". Also the MPC workflow is terrible, so it feels like a DAW c. 1990s Microsoft would have made.

Nicely done. MPC One has moved into the center position of my studio since Jan 21. You nailed the main aspects, I like probability a lot, and the midi mute function is also dope. If you're going to do a bunch of work in the box, I recommend a touchscreen stylus. Makes life a lot easier. The "MPC Software" DAW also offers fantastic integration with hardware MPCs, you can use the on board controls pretty much seamlessly to work on the same project files on a large screen with mouse and keyboard, with some other added benefits like full VST support and more audio tracks. I have the Live 2 and I love it. It has replaced practically all of my other gear.

I'm in the same boat. I thought the extra features would improve my workflow, but I discovered that I don't need them as often as I thought I would, and that navigating around them when I don't need them just slows things down too much for me. Good overview. Things that are cool that weren't mentioned: the lack of IO can be addressed with an external mixer or interface off the USB Port. For live performances, I plug it into my X-18, and can use all the 18 channels as ins or outs over USB. Haven't touched the built in audio IO in years. Thing that I don't like about the unit: all the things you would need for live performances are spread across all different menus/ pads! Track mutes, sample mutes, sequence changes, ect, all have to be their own seperate section. So if you want to mute something to go into a new sequence, you've got to jump between a bunch of different menus in a very short amount of titime.

Weekeenndddddd!! As usual, I enjoyed the video. Using USB and a USB hub, the MPC One is quite the studio center piece. I'm using mine with 6 synths/drummachines that provide Midi over USB. The old Emagic Unitor 8 midi interface is supported as well, which gives me another 8 Midi in/out on 5 pins connector. You can use one class compliant audio device to get upto 32 audio I/O.

@@AudioPilz Yip, was about to post the above. Ext. audio interface and USB hub adds a lot. Agree it's a mixed bag; clunky ui; steep learning curve; not enough storage; should stream audio; only 4 Q-links can be annoying, because UI is inconsistent with how they're setup; doesn't play nicely as a MIDI slave, should be called MPC Dom. But there's more I like than dislike. For all it's annoyances, it's still a bargain, because it's very good for a number of uses: drum pads, performance, hardware stereo sampler with many voices, (unlike Digitakt, which I ditched for it!) nifty auto-sampler, hardware sequencer with good feel; plugins like OP-X are good; master clock and usb host for whole studio; cv/gate interface for small eurorack; supports class compliant audio audio interface. Useful as digital mixer. The mistake Akai make is pitching it like it's great for everything and paying no attention to UI/UX quality. When, it's only good at some of those things (sampler, sequencer, hub, sketchpad), and not so good at others (file management, recording, detailed arrangement, full plugin-track host, final fx/mixing, mastering).

Great review, loved the features of the One and that classic Akai crunch, but as much as I tried just didn't fall in love with the sequencer, or the fiddly software, back on Maschine with Komplete kontrol S61 with an awesome interface/sound card and loving it. Also the Maschine 2 daw feels very intuitive like the old C-Lab creator program used to used to arrange with on the Atari ST in the 1990's.

Okay, I'm a bit surprised you did the MPC family, but hey - nothing wrong about what you said in the video, I totally agree with you. I have the MPC Key 61 which I use as my controll-all-be-all master magician of my entire studio (it has twice the memory), but I don't use it much for sampling, but I love the MPC's excellent midi-recorder and the fact that the USB midi can recognize the most obscure midi device that not even Windows would be able to love or find... I tested the Casio CT-S1000v I mentioned to you last week as a prime candidate for "Bad Gear" on Windows and it would not have it - but ... MPC just loved it and I could send Midi SysEx to hack the unit into features I thought only was possible in an alternate universe - so yeah, that lil thing is crazy powerful, you might want one, it's a swiss-army-knife of a midi studio and all synths-that-be.

Really enjoyed the Hardware house :) I kinda liked the MPC Live with sw 2.3 at the time, later they added so much stuff, it became too bloated, laggy a also more buggy. But I have to acknowledge that the MPC One is probably the best all in one box a new producer can buy. It does everything and it's easy to finish things later in a daw. May the (akai) Force be with you...maybe next time :)

I had the big brother of this - the MPC Live II (the gorgeous retro edition). I really wanted to love it, but using it genuinely felt like trying to operate a DAW through a keyhole. I was trying to use it mainly to sequence hardware Synths, and running their audio back through its internal FX. In the end I sold mine and went back to my trusty MC-909, which is very limited but actually has a wonderful workflow. If only that had more sample memory, or a way of hooking up a hard drive, it would be unstoppable. I was gutted about the MPC, it looked so cool and was a beautifully made thing.

A lot of people who run older mpcs or emu sp1200s would say no, but imo it's just as capable as the vintage samplers. Even more so in some ways, but you make a point about the MPC one in particular not being able to record phono which other versions including the MPC live 2 and x can.

One trick i found cool on these is to assign internal LFOs on the MPC to the Voltage outs to synch modular gear. Another cool thing the CV outputs have volt per octive settings as well. There's also a dedicated song mode as well. Send and returns can be modulated by midi or lfos as well. In terms of a box that does music things the MPC Live 2 is unmatched for the price.

as usual great vid. makes me scratching my black Mpc one from the frustration wall and spend another 10k hours to understand its japanese complex menu diving, especially sub optimal quantizing never doing what I virtuously played in groovewise (apart from redundant basic or triad rhythms). As soon as its external midi compatibility provides stable dataflow with my highend synths i might keep it instead of moving to mc707 or elektron or using my iPad friends drambo and groove rider. @@dubbylabby6068 the Force OS (really GUI, since base OS is Linux as we all know) was forked from the MPC.. so really there is no excuse for such a fundamental feature not being on both Honestly I think it'd be cool if MPC+APC MIDI controller would enable Force functionality.. and Force+MPC controller would unlock MPC functionality

Thanks for the great vid, Florian! I think you identified the pros and cons nicely. I have a gold MPC One also and I immediately replaced the data entry encoder with a proper LARGE, flat one I can spin with one finger. Though I bought an MPC Renaissance 10+ years ago and didn't like the workflow the One kinda called to me. Remember the first time you tried to learn the Elektron workflow? I think the MPC workflow requires a similar amount of time before it is comfortable.
