Welcome to Bad Gear, the show about the world's most hated audio tools. Today we are going to talk about the Moog DFAM, the Drummer From Another Mother. Is this semi-modular monophonic analog percussion synthesizer just a hipster toy or does it live up to the great heritage of Robert Arthur Moog?
Thanks to Klangfarbe for helping me out with one of their DFAMs

No doubt the DFAM is limited, but it sounds *so* good when it's in its wheelhouse. With a little extra modular gear you can break out of the 8 step sequencer, so it feels like the DFAM is really just meant to be paired with the other Moog semi-modular modules.

the best part of every friday is watching the new bad gear episode! I would love to see you take on a Roland SH32 synth. I bought one as my first step into hardware synths many years ago. I never really understood what was happening and how I got it to make all the weird and amazing sounds that came out of it. it was a totally different experience from the 2. gen electribes I wqas used to . I remember the manual was a classic Roland manual. It just made everything more confusing for a young synth novice in his late teens. All the weed i was smoking back then probably didn't help either. After following your channel for some months now and seing you take on several pieces of the good old gear me and my mates went through in our search for fun and good gear to play with, has really been a fun trip down memory lane for me. You inspired me to go out and buy a used Korg KP3 again, just because it's a really fun sampler to use. I'm looking forward to keep on following you further down the rabbit hole of "bad gear", and see how you make all the things "shine" just as bright as a piece of late 90's/early 00's piece of gear possibly can. Thank you for all the work you put into making theese videos. they really do brighten up my fridays. have a nice weekend. Already looking forward to the next one.

@@ultralife73 What Ilike most about the DFAM is how it *wants* to sound nasty and aggressive. With most gear you have to coax it into being menacing with FX and various modulations, while it's a bit ofa struggle to get the DFAM to settle down and give you something smooth and lovely.

I've got the whole series and really like them, but as you said, the fact that it's only 8 steps really limits what you can do with the DFAM. You can always use external cv sources. If you have modular rack, I’d assume you have a bunch of nice LFO’s and at least one sequencer. You can use korg sq-1 an voila! - 16 steps to your command. Cheap Keystep - 32 steps, as I remember. Yes, DFAM is a bit limited on its own (like most of synths), but with little external help it’s capabilities are limitless

So... it's a drummer that: - has only one limb (and it doesn't appear to be neither arm nor leg), - hits *exactly* on time -- but it's not *your* time, - has memory capacity to strike that drum exactly eight times before looping right back, but... ... can strike these drums in really incredible ways that produce amazing sound as long you spend time to tell it *exactly* how to do it before each performance. So yeah, if it were a person, I'd be wondering if their parents were vacationing in Pripyat in late April 1986.

I’ve been tempted by the DFAM in the past, and I’m sure I’d have fun with it. It’s one of those things that’s definitely not “bad”, but has a very specific use case that doesn’t work for most people’s needs, and in that case it really shines, as your demos show. The one thing that seems a major omission is not MIDI, since it’s mostly designed for live tweaking, but a reset/sync input. In the end, I found I could do most of what I liked about it with a couple of modules I already had, so I couldn’t justify the space, but it still has a unique sound and workflow that sets it apart.

The DFAM is an absolute industrial monster sound wise but i don't have one. So, I fake the DFAM sound on iOS with Ruismaker Noir and a little bit of distortion. The built in sequencer is extremely similar with pitch and velocity adjustable per note, but it's expandable beyond 8 notes and supports odd signatures. Just gotta add that distortion so the fm sounds more analogy 😉

Recording loops and one-shots off my synths into Ableton and arranging them in the box has been my main workflow ever since I realized I have neither the financial means nor the dexterity to do the DAWless thing the way I would want.

@@iwanwesterduin I have more than enough gear for a fully DAWless setup, but I don’t have the space to actually set it all up at once! More importantly, I’m terrible at multitasking, and I prefer to craft layered, carefully considered music in the box.

@@deastman2 yeah the multitasking thing is what I meant with dexterity. I consider myself more of a composer than a musician/instrumentalist, so juggling multiple instruments and still keep things interesting and coherent is not my forte!

I`m doing exactly the same and that opened up the instrument for me. In the first 2 weeks i thought i made a terrible mistake with this purchase. But once i adapted my workflow, i only feel love for this weird box. It just sounds so great!!! Too bad its almost impossible to dial back in the cool lines you once made, to perform them live instead of playing the recording, but i guess that`s how it is and its limitations are advantages on the other hand.

My favorite gear of all time. In fact, it’s what got me back into my synths that were collecting dust. Don’t make the mistake of thinking of it as a drum machine just because it says drummer in the name… it is not. It is an expressive percussion as it says in the manual. It is a percussion instrument and thus lets you express yourself. Best to couple with a drum machine and you can spend hours on it running the same drum sequence in the background 😂

Definitely type A here. The DFAM was the first (semi-) modular piece of gear that I kept. I read a lot in the comments that the Mother32 is THE companion for the DFAM. Even though that is kind of true and is what the manufacturer intended, my recommendation for the best partner would be the Elektron Oktatrack (with a Korg sq10 for sync and quantized melodies). It’s an instant fun combination especially if you’re into harsher types of techno. Just dial in an awesome patch/loop on the dfam, bounce it into the octa, remove all cables on the dfam, rinse and repeat until you have a solid base for a new track, chop the loops and rearrange them on the octa… super small fun and travel setup :)

It’s really complementary with a Mother-32, the M32 provides MIDI, a sequencer and an LFO whereas the DFAM provides tonal variety and 2 lanes of steppable CV to add expression to the sequences.

yeah you're looking at $1200 for a still fairly basic Techno setup, you're getting into vintage gear & fully featured analogue polysynths at that price. the only one of those little semi modulars remotely worth the price is the Subharmonicon, IMO, since it actually does something other gear doesn't and feels a bit more "complete" feature wise.

@@SisterRose That's why I bought the subharmonicon. I wanted a Reichian post minimalist machine. It does that ok, I have trouble with the oscillator tones which surprised me when it came to Moog. I also find the tempo to be too fast or too slow via midi. I really liked how Alex Ball used it in his video on it. I could probably use to explore the "preset" boards to expand my understanding of it. Have any suggestions that helped you get your head around it?

Probably one of my favorite pieces of gear I own, but it’s totally limited. Needless to say it’s amazing sounding for some live jams and sampling. The Edge is gonna be fun to test drive and hear the comparisons. Glad I already purchased it and recovered from the financial setback of this purchase a few years back. I owned a DFAM for a while but felt like I hit the bottom of the well in terms of sounds rather quickly. That combined with it being super fiddly in a non-modular setup due to the lack of MIDI led me to offload it for roughly what I paid. I'm curious to see how the Edge comes out since it's cheap enough for the limited palette and seemingly fixes my issues with the DFAM's connectivity.
