Could be. There's an interview with Calvin Smith out there where he basically says that Lewis was on drugs during those years too. I think Ben got caught because he had an injury earlier in the season (hamstring?) and threw caution to the wind in deciding to use steroids to recover so close to the olympics. He wanted to win so bad that he just rolled the dice and ended up getting caught.

In 2003, Wade Exum, the United States Olympic Committee's director of drug control administration from 1991 to 2000, gave copies of documents to Sports Illustrated that revealed that some 100 American athletes had failed drug tests from 1988 to 2000, arguing that they should have been prevented from competing in the Olympics but were nevertheless cleared to compete.

Doesn't make it right, the science of masking is better now than it was 36 years ago. For Ben's one mistake when he was 26 years old, Carl is reminding the world 36 years later. I worked at a gym in NewMarket Ontario Canada where Ben did his strength training after he returned to "normal life" and he was never the same after all the ridicule he took from that one incident. To be fair, antidoping in 1988 is not the same as in 2024. Without going into a lot of details, in 1988 only 2 types of doping were clear and that was anabolic steroids for speed and power events and blood doping/epo for endurance events. If the IOC busted every athlete who tested positive for banned substances other than steroids and epo, I estimate that over 50 percent of the Olympic athletes would have been sent home. Most stimulants at that time were added to the ban list in 1988 only a couple months before the Olympics Games. At that time, stimulants were everywhere, in supplements and many over-the-counter medicines. In 1988, Carl and several other USA athletes tested positive at the U.S. Olympic Trials, but stated their stimulant usage was inadvertent. It is a fair debate whether Carl knowingly took stimulants; however, 2 important things to know are, Carl was tested at the Olympics and did not compete with stimulants in his system at the 1988 Olympics. In terms of performance enhancing, stimulants are a world of difference from anabolic steroids usage. And in the case of Ben Johnson, testing was so crude back then that if he had stopped doping a week before the games, he probably would not have been caught, but he was literally doping the day before his race. - Not saying Carl is completely innocent but the Ben Johnson comparison is not fair.
@HamishGarland3 ай бұрын
Johnson did stop taking steriods before the games, he wasn't taking the substance he tested positive for, and it was in a form that is broken down inside the body in hours. He was taking steriods, but he was also stitched up.

The non-boycotted Olympic Games (both summer and winter) during the Cold War Era were a totally different animal. It was an Us v. Them mentality being played by both the US and the USSR where both sides did what was needed for the political stability of the entire globe in which it brought. The unofficial official stance of the two central governments, "fine so long as to not get caught." That should never be denied.

In a short time after that 1988 Olympics race, I recall John Madden said that based upon the bulked-up physique Johnson had, that Johnson got his performance out of a bottle. And those words came prior to Johnson's doping test being made public. The attributed source of that was from his five-minute radio segment he had with morning radio show host Gene Nelson on radio station KSFO, San Francisco.

To broaden a lot of the comments below. There were any number of "cheats" at the Seoul Olympics. It has been said quite a few more tested positive, but it was felt that silence was required officially, "for the good of the sport." All serious followers of track know fully well that a number of WRs (primarily on the women's side) set in the 1980s, are still standing in early 2024.

Lewis and two of his training partners all took the same three types of banned stimulants and were caught at the 1988 US Olympic trials, according to the documents released by a disgruntled former senior US anti-doping official, Dr Wade Exum. But on appeal to their national Olympic committee, all were cleared of inadvertent doping. Two months later, at the Seoul Olympics, Lewis finished second in the 100 metres sprint. But when Canadian Ben Johnson failed his Olympic drug test, Lewis was awarded the 100m gold.
