It's crazy that Carl Lewis won a gold medal in 1996. Because I remember watching him when I was a kid in 1984. Then the next year I competed in my first track meet, in the long jump. Then I competed through high school and in college, graduating in 1995. So, in late 1995 I was working a regular job. My track days were over. Carl Lewis, who inspired me to go to my first track meet as a child was somehow still winning Olympic gold medals while I was retired from track and working in an office. That's insane.

My husband and I went to high school with Carl, Cleve and Carol. His mother was my gym teacher. They were an iconic family and very well respected at John F. Kennedy High School in Willingboro. Local boys and girl made good with two amazing parents.

Funny story. In 2014 i was at the NCAA indoor track championships in NM and Carl Lewis walked right up to an open seating area. The usher was on her way to throw him out when a chorus of "do you know who that is" erupted around her. He flashed his credentials and she let him stay. But after a few people pulled up their phones and showed her 'who' this man was ... she was embarrassed. Poor lady was likely wasn't a US citizen when Carl was the face of track and field. Carl saw her embarrassment and hugged her (she was almost in tears by this time). I still have a pic of the two together. Carl was a class act.

Carl, this was great to listen to. I'm that Iowa coach who came to your long jump clinic a few years ago. I'm still coaching long jumpers in Iowa and I enjoyed getting the chance to be at your clinic and getting to meet and talk to you and LeRoy. Folks, he is a down to earth great guy and one of the greatest people I've ever meet. Still hope someday you'll come present at the Iowa Track coaches clinic. I feel so privileged that I got to meet the greatest athlete of our time. Thanks for doing this interview so kids know even you had to work hard to achieve that greatness. Glad you also told kids to go out for multiple sports to be a better all around athlete in the long run. Take care, Carl.

If Carl was born a coursing greyhound, hares would've be on the endangered list halfway through the eighties. He had blistering pace, he could long-jump like a deer and he possessed the 'prey-drive' of a bull shark. As an mid-twenties Brit, I was in awe of him; as mid-sixties Brit I still am. What a priviledge to listen to the Great man. What a superb interviewee. Outstanding!

Carl looks great. Man, he ran a clinic in every 100-meter race I saw him run. He executed impeccable upright (bicycle) form. He ran like a gazelle. Eric Dickerson ran with the football looking like Carl's form. He wasn't slow out of the blocks, but he was never in a hurry. Carl was beautifully, gradually upright from the blocks about 6 steps out, and accelerated to top speed. (Compared to Ben Johnson's star, who sprang up erect and then charged ahead.) Just like he says, I always thought he hit top speed at 60-70 meters and (seemed to, in my eyes) was able to accelerate out of top speed. Here he says hit top speed and held on. Carl and Eveyln Ashford dominated the 100 meter races for a full decade. Carl was / is The Dude. Mad respect.

As a kid growing up in small town USA back then. My friends and cousins were all glued to the footage of Carl Lewis and all the other US. Olympic athletes. It was amazing to watch. We were all proud to be Americans.

I remember going to the Penn Relays every year in Philadelphia, and that was always a unique experience because Carl didn't run at 'Penns' every year, but when he did Ticket Sales were always a few dollars more, and way back before 9/11, you can enter in and out the Stadium at Penns. It was a true carnival, so Carl would walk the streets of Philly, in between races, and you could see the 'Aura' that was around him when he was in your presence. Carl was and still is the man. He was Track and Field for about 2 decades. Remember, he would have won in '80, as well, if we didn't boycott the Olympics that Summer!

Born in 1979, I was too young to remember 84', but I definitely remember 88' and beyond. It's hard to describe just how popular Lewis was. He was definitely up there with the Heavyweight boxing champ,n Michael Jordan, Wayne Gretzky....he was that big.

I got to meet Carl a couple of time at a Best Buddies charity bike ride. He shot the starters gun to get us going. He was very approachable at the after party and he lit up when I asked him about Edwin Moses. Real nice Guy.

I was a HUGE fan of both (even spent a semester at U of H "with" the track team) and consider Carl the King of T&F but as hurdler, Moses was (pun intended) a god-he was the only athlete who I conder "perfect." His races could not have been run better. and! His undefeated streak was the most incredible thing in all of sprts.

If he questioned Bolt's times why didn't he immediately question Flo Jo's insane times in Seoul. She made a massive drop from mediocre in 1984 to men's times in 1988 in both 100m and 200m. Also why didn't he question Michael Johnson's 200m time in Atlanta? Massive drop there too from the previous year(s). Or was it because they were/are American athletes and not subject to the same scrutiny?

We first became aware of Carl just after Skeets broke 13. Then I was at U of H in 1980 as an unofficial "member" of the track team. Off the track, we were big partiers-usually at someone's house but one night I danced the evening away with Carol in a club called Popcorn(s) in Houston. Watching Carl on the track was very inspiring (as a runner-and as a human). He (and Jessie) is the true King of T&F.

Whenever Carl Lewis name was invoked, I remember BALCO and those enhancement drugs, almost bringing the sport into disrepute... Carl Lewis can deny it all he wants he was caught cheating and it was covered up by the USA... Even his teammates said that he was on drugs... He gets absolutely no respect, he's a cheater.

54:15 - 😏. In 2003, a great American sprinter and championship long jumper said about his own positive drug test results (plural) and PEDs, "there really is no pure evidence to show that it does something. It does nothing". That man is still the only 4 time Olympic long jump champion.😌

GOAT? That's funny. He's a 3-time PED drug cheat.. test results were covered up by US track and field officials and he was allowed to run in '88 Seoul Olympics. (Google it) He's the biggest fraud in track and field. His failed test results were made public 15 years afterwards - after expiration of the statues of limitations that enabled him to keep the medals he won

As soon as I saw Ben Johnson about 10 feet from me, I knew he was jacked up on something because pictures doesn't give true justice to his muscularity in person. I was very happy of the outcome of Carl winning the next day and partly because I had a lot of money riding on him LOL😅

If you were there in 1988 and saw Ben Johnson as closeup as I, you would clearly see he was extremely more muscular than anyone else by far. Unless you were there live as I was it useless to continue this conversation.

@Grogu-485 nah...when Ben came up positive everyone was tested. Carl's system was clean. Thats all that matters at the end of the day is you're negative. The conspiracy theory regarding the Association protecting Carl is wishful thinking. They gain nothing by protecting Carl or any other athlete.

Here’s the facts that many might not know. Ben Johnson like all was using steroids. The USA set him up to fail the tests after he won. Carl along with every other runner in that race had failed tests through their careers including that Olympics. The USA hated that Ben was the best as it cost them a lot of money. Carl knows this and so do all involved who are still alive. Carl Lewis was a guy who hated not being the best. Ben owned him and it drives Carl crazy to today. Cheers

Carl was geared to the gills on performance enhancing drugs. Most, not all runners were on the gear.

You all Jamaican athletes are so EVIL, one day coming soon, you all will be asked to prove that, if can't, sued and DEPORTED. If Carl Lewis was on drugs, American would've taken him down, because he demanded wages. Ben Johnson owns only the demons he was playing with, drugs! Wait! They own him, and set him up for a down fall.

Not true. Calvin Smith and Robson Da Silva never tested positive in their careers.

@@deangarratt4965 Doesn’t necessarily mean they weren’t taking them. Some had good chemists that found their way around the testing protocols.
