I think Chris wasn't being honest. If you really listen to the words. He is referring to waiting for god. Like a Stone is a scripture in the bible where Jesus says he will be the stone where his church will be built on. The house with many rooms are mansions.Which he built for us. He speaks about a book he read, what book? He says blood to wine, heaven, angels. And says the patience of god to wait for us to find him. Either Chris wasn't honest or he just wanted ppl to read the words and find out for themselves

I'd never seen rather Chris said that or not, but that is how I've always felt about this song. He's thinking about killing himself while he's sitting in a motel room, and starts reading the motel bible while trying to decide what to do. He finally decides that for now he'll try to patiently wait for death like a stone. If you've ever been in that same kind of place and had to go through that same kind of thought process just to hang on for one more day, this song gives you a gut punch every time.

@@themourningstar338 why is it that all these famous ppl are having mental break downs and suicidal? there is more going on behind the scenes that is being shown to the general public. AND these famous ppl have to keep it quit. They put there loved ones in danger if they say to much or themselves. Most ppl don't put it togther that best friends Chris and the lead singer of Linkin Park both offed themselves weeks apart in the same manner. This doesnt raise a red flag with most? wonder why

I need Lex to describe everything for me, because how her brain works is amazing. I could tell Brad was getting into this one more which was fun to see. I know rock isn't really his cup of tea, but it's such a diverse genre that there is something for everyone. I heard this song the first time live and I was right near the stage. They played the whole first album and when they did this song, in particular that solo, that's how I was and felt. Temple of the Dog wasn't a side group. It was a super group made up of Seattle bands to raise money for the family of Andrew Wood of Mother Love Bone who died of a heroin overdose. Eddie Vedder sang on it and would later form Pearl Jam with the surviving members of Mother Love Bone. Chris Cornell would go on to form Audioslave with the surviving members of Rage Against the Machine after the breakup of Soundgarden.

Chris Cornell’s voice is supernatural/metaphysical, on a different plane of existence. WOW!! You nailed it Lex!! Chris' voice was and instrument and was something special... as far as the lyrics.... I saw and interview with Chris (he was in his home) with a radio station and fans were writing in with questions someone asked him the meaning of this song.... he said he wrote it about the contemplation over his own spirituality.... EXAMPLE: 1)"In a room full of emptiness, by a freeway" = what's on the side of every major freeway/highway? Motels.... 2) "I was lost in the pages of a book full of death" = what's in every motel room? A Bible.... (which is technically full of death) 3) "Reading how we'll die alone and if we're good, we'll lay to rest anywhere we want to go" and "On my deathbed, I will pray to the God's and the angels, like a Pagan... to anyone who will take me to Heaven" = the contemplation over his beliefs... Just my thoughts on some of the lyrics We all know Chris was "deep" (for lack of a better term).... He had SO much to say in his life! To further see his greatness and maybe give us another take on his lyrics (of the same theme) check out "SAY HELLO TO HEAVEN" Chris in Temple Of The Dog (Tribute/letter to his friend and roommate Andrew Wood lead singer of Mother Love Bone) "I AM THE HIGHWAY" Chris with Audioslave RIP Andrew Wood, Kurt Cobain, Chris Cornell and Layne Staley.... thanks for the music boys!

I saw him do a like 3 hour acoustic set at the Bena-Roya Hall in Seattle right before he passed. So honored to have been there and experience this mans GENIUS in such an intimate setting. Honest;y makes me cry sometimes.

Chris is my favorite. You haven’t even touched on his vocal abilities yet! Here r some that really showcase his voice and will give you chills: When I’m Down live at the Troubadour (solo-my fave live performance of anyone EVER) Seasons Studio Jam version (solo-really showcases his falsetto) Billie Jean (MJ cover) live at MSN Hunger Strike official video (Temple of the Dog-1 album tribute project Chris did. On this song Eddie Vedder sings with Chris before Pearl Jam was big) Fell on Black Days and The Day I tried to Live (both Soundgarden) I don’t think you’ve done one of Audioslaves biggest songs..I am the Highway 🙂❤️🙂💗

The more I hear this song, and I mean every time I hear it, I realize how perfect and amazing it is. It literally has everything at an extremely high level. Lyrics.... Check, incredible vocal melody and performance... Check, brilliant guitar performance and tones.... Check, super groovy baseline... Yup, phenomenal sounding drums... Definitely. The chord progressions are amazing and work so perfectly with his melody too. Literally perfect song.
