This is my honest review of the Audix OM7 microphone. I have been singing in a live band for over 18 years and used many different microphones but the Audix OM7 is by far the best sounding most feedback resistant mic I have ever used. If you are in a live band and want a microphone that sounds great and outperforms all of the other major brand microphones on the market, I really suggest that you try the Audix OM7 out for yourself.

The thing with this microphone, it's awesome at rejecting feedback, BUT, if you have a lot of dynamic in your singing, a lot of belted or higher more more concrete stuff mixed with some lower or more sensitive melodies or even falsetto, you WILL have a lot of trouble with this microphone... In fact, even though you're able to turn it up in the monitors a bit more, you'll be STRAINING more when singing. I have been using it for 4-5 years live, and had to switch to a Beta58. Now let me explain a bit better. The OM7 has awesome feedback rejection, but for the most part, that's because it doesn't have a very wide area where it picks up a lot of sound, it's practically the best sounding when your lips are touching the grill, or are about 1 cm away from it, back up just 3 more centimeters and it sounds like you have been turned down in volume (but also fullness, it looses a lot of bass and the lower midrange, which is maybe not noticeable in standalone mic comparisons here on youtube, but it is in live use with a band), and if you back up 10 cm, which is pretty much ok with other mikes for belted notes, you're completely out of the mix. Now why does this make such a problem, you just stay on the grill the whole time, right? Ok, BUT, when you're on the grill the whole time, then your belted notes are heard well, and your normal concrete singing is heard well, but your more gentle stuff is again OUT OF THE MIX, because you CAN'T come closer to the microphone to amplify yourself naturally, for example with a beta 58 I stay away about two fingers from the grill, and I just go in all the way to the grill when I'm singing the softer stuff, so because you CAN'T DO THAT on an OM7, you tend to sing that stuff stronger, which makes your whole concert a non-stop strain + you sound forced. Now PLEASE don't get me wrong, this is a GREAT SOUNDING MIKE, I even like how it sounds on my voice a lot better than a Beta58. And I do think that with a bit higher scale rig you can fix things like that, for example in a better production, just having a bit stronger compression on your vocal live would help even out the shouted parts with the soft stuff so you could be a bit more comfortable just STAYING ON THE GRILL ALL THE TIME, but that's definitely something you need to do with it. So, if you're a singer who rarely goes soft, or for the most part scream or growl in a metal band, then this mike is for you definitely, it'll help with feedbeck rejection and simplify things a lot. But if you've got a lot of dynamic I'd say RATHER GO WITH OM6 or OM5 or a Beta58, a Sennheiser e945... Wish someone told me that when I was buying it...

I have this mic, too. You make a very good point. It's a hypercardioid design, which has more proximity, as it picks up less from the sides, but does pick up more than a regular cardiod, from the rear. This creates proximity effect in the same way that a ribbon-microphone will - due to it having a figure-8 pattern - which picks up equally as much from the back as from the front. Hence ribbon mics have more proximity-effect than any other microphone design/pattern.

I agree with all of this. I recently switched over from a Beta58, and best move I've made. Really cuts the spill over from the rest of the band, and much richer tone.

Previously I read many great reviews about the Audix OM-3 so I bought a couple, they were nice. Then came the Audix OM-5, most studios were using them in the USA. So I bought 2 and yes they were great, nice and clear tones. But then I read reviews about the ElectroVoice N/D767a and bought one of them. Absolutely fabulous is how I find it. So iv sold most of the Audix but kept one om5. I do not sing in a band and I understand the need for cutting through the mix and avoiding the feedback. Soooo, my question is have you tried the om5 and do you still find the om7 to be of significant difference and improvement. Have you tried the EV-767 ? Be nice to hear some comparison with om7. Thanks a lot, keep up the good work.

I'm trying to decide whether to go all out with the OM7 or just go with the OM2. Any suggestion there? have you used the OM2? how much difference is there?

I had read in a review post where the singer said this mic actually made him a better singer. I bought one to try and never looked back. I've performed hundreds of gigs with this mic and it continues to amaze me. I have a somewhat weak voice and am by no means what I would call a pro singer (Sax is my axe!) but this mic really brings out the best in my singing voice. The low, low feedback is the icing on the cake. A year or so ago I tried a few other mics from other companies in the same price range, and returned them, sticking with the Audix. Well worth the price, in my opinion.

I have more of a lower chris isaak ranged voice, But I would like my voice to be able to cut through heavy guitars. You said this mic is feedback resistant, but you also described it as rich, which often means more midbumped.... is it bright/trebly enough to allow my entire range to cut through the mix? is it as durable? and how does it compare to a Beta 58?

Hi William, I have used a Beta 58 many times over the years but there is just no comparison between the Beta and Audix. Even though the Audix has a great lower end tone it still cuts through. It just sounds a lot richer over all frequencies. One thing that I have noticed is that every engineer I have worked with while using this microphone comments on how they barely neeed to EQ the mic in order to get a great sound out the front. What might be an idea is to hire one just for a gig and see how you go with it. As for duribility the microphone is built like a tank..lol.. so not problems there..

Would this be compatible with vocal percussion (beatboxing)? I would use it with an A Capella group. If not, which one do you recommend.

Audix actually has two mics made for beatboxing, the Audix Fireball, and the Fireball V. I have not tried them, as I am not a beatboxer, but I just wanted to let you know.

Larry Tate I am about to do a review on a microphone I tried out last night which totally blew my mind.. 20 years in the industry and over 3,500 shows and I have never used any other microphone that has even come close.. Mind you I thought that the Audix OM7 was the bomb until I tried the Lampifier microhpne. It has it's own little compression system inbuilt and it was literally like singing in a studio. You sing low and it's nice and loud! You sing high and it's nice and loud. Almost as if your vocal was mastered in a studio session. Highly recommend it.. I wouldnt buy the Audix unless you're super diciplined when singing. You need to constantly be close to the mic.. With the Lampifier mic it just doesn't seem to matter..

Thanks for the feedback. My guitarist doesn't always stay right up on the mic cause plays guitar at the same time usually. So you recommend this lamplifier over the audix om7? Can the lamplifier be used to record live with the drums and guitar playing at the same time on vocals?

***** I have used it and it' a great mic but does still have a wide polar pattern which I don't like when trying to sing next to a drummer.. But I would definitely go the 87a than a standard 57
