Interviewer: Waar bent u geboren?
Audrey Hepburn: Hier in Brussel.
Audrey Hepburn: Ik heb gedanst.
Interviewer: U hebt in Londen gewerkt . Heel different. Was dat zoals men leest in publicaties in dagbladen?
Audrey Hepburn: Het is niet zoals men werkelijk in dagbladen leest.
Helemaal in mijn carrière.
Interviewer: U hebt uw man toch niet ontmoet in Parijs?
Hoe is Belgisch Congo meegevallen?
Interviewer: Ik wens u veel succes in uw carrière…

She was as good as Dutch in everything but law, which officially denied her claiming her mother's nationality due to her Belgian birth. She spent fifteen of the first nineteen years of her life in the Netherlands and didn't start using her birth name, Audrey until she moved to London in 1948. Prior to that, she went by the name Adriaantje. Her first acting appearance was playing a KLM stewardess in a Dutch language film called Dutch in seven lessons.

And also not a Dutch dialect, huh? As soon something isn't not that well or pure, some folks tend to mention 'Flemish', isn't it?

In the Netherlands she lived in my town, Arnhem. Only a year after her arrival in 1939, World War II started and Arnhem was occupied by the Germans. I'm not going in to the details, but especially from 1942 on, it was very though under this horrible occupation, and in 1944 the town was almost completely destroyed during the allied operation Market Garden. Audrey has her own statue in Arnhem and a square named after her. She was an extraordinary and beautiful woman.

Yeah dutch does have a lot of harsh tones. Japanese for example sounds really good because its a language thats really heavy on vowels. Really like japanese singing and rap because of that. Also unfortunately this is not what spoken dutch sounds like in the randstad. People in my surrounds unfornately treat flemish in a derogatory way because of how they pronounce the g which i find unfornate because the sound of belgian is very calming. this song kinda illustrates the stark difference in sound between flemish and Dutch kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ipyJeJiZl77Yn6s.html

It is the more formal accent of the nobility of that time. They have a tendency to speak more clearly and string together words less than standard Dutch. When two languages from the same language groups are spoken like that and with less colloquialisms it becomes easier to understand. Also I’d think Dutch and German upper class have more contact and influence each others use of language. These are factors that foster mutual intelligibility.

Very interesting! I had always known Audrey spoke Dutch by virtue of her mother being from here and her having lived here during the war, but I had never actually heard her speaking it. Turns out she spoke it perfectly, with even a fairly posh accent to it (possibly because her mother was a baroness?). Great footage this!

Lil kleine?

I'm not an expert in Dutch language, but I think she had a southern Dutch accent with their "zachte G" compared to the harsher pronunciation that is more common in the north.

Her accent is a typical accent that is spoken in high society. The royal family has the same kind of accent. I can understand how one could mix it up for the Limburg accent though, but it's very different.
