This is Timothy Dalton’s immortal masterpiece. He’s handsome, talented and versatile.

The best pairing of this well treasured novel. Very restrained and exactly how I imagined this relationship when I read it as an 11year old. I have studied The Brontes,and had the privilege of looking at some first hand material.You have to ignore Mr Rochester’s handsome features and focus on his compelling voice - his passion ,frustration and compassion.This is a brilliant interpretation of Mr Rochester.Do not be put off By his good looks.AND THE ULTIMATE STAR IS JANE .She is exactly how imagined her at a young age,and I have never changed my mind.I have taught this novel for 35 Years ,to a wide range of abilities, and every cohort has ‘got it’.A remarkable tale! Long may English Literature -Shakespeare,Jane Austen,George Elliott,Dryden,Thackeray and many others continue to be read and watched by generations to come. The new version of Vanity Fair is fab.

I think Timothy Dalton’s incredible handsomeness actually adds another level to the romantic aspect of the story. The idea of a rich, sophisticated, and powerful man falling head over heels for a plain, quiet governess is very romantic; add Mr. Dalton’s glorious handsomeness to Rochester’s character, and my heart close to bursts! ❤️

Why is Mrs. Fairfax so giggety about Blanche Ingram marrying Mr. Rochester if she knows that Mr. Rochester is already married? What's up with that? Why was she ok with Blanche marrying Rochester but freaked out when he proposes to Jane?
@sarahbrightmore37494 жыл бұрын
She didn't know Mr Rochester was married, at least not for sure. Mr Rochester told Jane when he confessed all later on, Grace Poole and Dr Carter were the only ones he took into confidence about his wife. He also said Mrs Fairfax may indeed have suspected something, but she could have gained no knowledge as facts.

@@sarahbrightmore3749 From what I remember from the book, Mrs. Fairfax caught Jane and Mr. Rochester kissing before she knew they were engaged which is why she was so freaked out, she thought they were having an affair. She also didn't know who "the crazy lady in the attic" was.

@@gandhibhagat285 Very interesting. Very much appreciate your response! I still have issues with Mrs. Fairfax, however. Assuming she didn't know about Mrs. Rochester, it would appear her only problem with Mr. R marrying Jane is the disparity in social status. One cannot say she is concerned that Mr. R is just playing with Jane as he's clearly going ahead with the wedding. Is Mrs. Fairfax the one who wrote to Richard Mason to tell him about the wedding? I can't remember how he found out.

@@gandhibhagat285 I saw that your friend has replied and just now came to look at his/her replies (I think there were two?) but they're gone! I wonder why they were deleted? AH! Maybe she was for it because she figures he they both have a lot of money, maybe money can cover a whole multitude of sins. I don’t know. It is weird though. And I think more importantly she was freaked out that Jane did actually say yes and would have to find out about the wife, but also with her she is prejudiced. Jane is still common and is a little bit above her own station.

The visual medium of film is different than a book (obviously) ;), so adjustments are always made. I have zero issues with Timothy Dalton’s handsomeness in this role (other than getting lost in his gorgeous face), and I think it adds to the fascinating story. A rich, incredibly handsome but rather depressed aristocratic man having a strong connection with and falling in love with a lowly, plain governess is compelling and terribly romantic. This is my favorite version of Jane Eyre, largely due to Timothy Dalton’s powerful performance!
