Youthman was able to dial in his favorite settings using similar Klipsch speakers but to me the real strength of Audyssey is getting different speakers to play nice together. I have a mix of horn loaded Klipsch speakers and some dome tweeter speakers and they have different efficiencies. After I screw up the setup and things sound bad all I have to do is run Audyssey and they sound great again.

Great video. It's nice to hear someone who knows what they're talking about. I've been using Audyssey on my AV Receivers and processors for years now, and there's tons of misinformation about it, so it's nice to see someone spread the truth. (LPF for LFE, I'm lookin' at you!) Though I always go in and "fix" the issues I've had with Audyssey setting speaker size and crossover, I've never thought to level match with an SPL meter too. That's a great idea and I think I'll be doing that double-check in the near future. I suspect that, in my room, it will be pretty accurate. I've found that my measured distances are dead on. My room is symmetrical and acoustically treated, so that no doubt helps.
@Youthman

Thank you for the kind words Christopher. I certainly do not know it all when it comes to Audyssey but gladly share what I have learned over the years with others. Have you ever tried the Audyssey app? Once I get some free time (what’s that) I want to purchase it and see what it has to offer.
@TheReverendSlim

A word of advice on level-matching post-Audyssey: The in-AVR tones are almost never the best way to do this, because even after you do a calibration, those tones don't tend to have the equalization applied. Audyssey sets its levels based on the post-EQ expectation. So ideally, you would want to use a disc with test tones so that the tones themselves have had equalization applied when you're reading them with your meter. Also, IMPORTANT: When you do this, disable DynamicEQ. DEQ slightly boosts surround presence at lower volumes than reference (0). So unless you're running the test tones with volume at 0, the surrounds will read slightly higher if you have DEQ engaged. DEQ also boosts the sub to increasing degrees as you get lower away from reference, so level-checking with DEQ engaged will give skewed results. You can re-engage DEQ after checking the levels. Also: If you're running Atmos, consider that DEQ was designed before Atmos and therefore does NOT do any boosting of the overhead/upfiring speakers. The problem here is that running DEQ with an Atmos system with perfectly matched levels will collapse overhead sounds downward a bit as DEQ is boosting the side/rear surrounds only. A fair compromise is to set your AVR to your typical listening level and then run surround test tones from a disc to see how much boost DEQ is applying... then manually boost the levels of your overhead speakers to match. A big problem with DEQ and Atmos is that you can't use the bass/loudness boost function of DEQ without the surround boost function, so if you like the former, you're stuck with the latter. You may consider ditching DEQ altogether and just raising your subwoofer levels a bit to compensate so that the cross-channel placement for Atmos will be more accurate.

Thanks for the video. I want to make sure I understand your suggestions on setting the crossover. Even though I have full range front speakers I should set the crossover to 80hz and set the speakers to small? I thought that setting the speakers to large would ensure they would produce the full sound the speaker was able to produce. And I was under the impression that making adjustments after the audyssey set up would defeat the audyssey adjustments made.

Audyssey MultEQ TX32 sounds just like the YPAO RSC Multipoint I have on my Yamaha RX-A880. I found the best setup for my room was to take a test on the C,L,R, and standing Center - I place the mic on both my ears, laying it directly on the top of my ear where my eardrum is right behind the mic just like where I sit. So if my Right ear is facing the back wall, that's where I let the EQ measure. That worked brilliantly for me. My Klipsch sound dam near perfect to me.

Dear Youthman. I am from the Netherlands and recently bought a Denon AVR-X4500H including crown xls 1502 pre amp and bought svs atm speakers together 11.1. In addition, I have a yamaha ystw 800watt and some wharfedale speakers center, front and rear. Have also calibrated well this is similar to your video advice. But with certain settings that you have adjusted such as large to small and 80 hz settings crossover and with bass on lfe. With this I also adjusted well. I have the feeling that it is similar to your marantz that the sound benefits TV movies and PS4.

Before using Audyssey setup, I suppose it would be good to get the speaker placement the best possible, primarily the Sub. Also to then get the phase and level matched with front. Is it required to get the rest of the speaker distance and levels matched as well and if so at what level should the master volume be set at in doing this. Basically any setup steps before starting Audyssey measurements .

I just downloaded the MultEQ Editor app. My receiver is a Marantz SR6014, so it's definitely compatible. I ran through the calibration, and I have a question about room correction results. Looking at the curve comparison, it appears that the correction was applied in the lower frequencies, but at around 500-600 Hz and above, the "after" and "before" curves are identical. Same goes for all non-subwoofer speakers. What do you think might be the problem?

@Youthman, when frequency response range for center channel is 82Hz -21KHz, does that mean setting the crossover for it at 80Htz is pointless, because it can’t go lower than 82Htz (ma be wrong in how I’m understanding this)? Does that, then mean you have to set the crossover above 82Htz (what about rule of thumb THX recommendation of 80Htz) for a speaker like that? In short, is crossover frequency different from frequency response range for speakers?

Hi Youthman, I looked at this as I am interested in a new Marantz receiver. I have a question as I’m a little confused by the lfe option. Currently I run my pioneer elite with the double bass option. I have Klipsch Cornwall’s as my mains and with the double base option I can run them as large so the have full bandwidth. The double bass option will still send the chosen crossover to the sub to enhance it (doubled). This is the only way I have ever gotten it to sound correct to me in my setup for theater, otherwise what’s the point of speakers with 15” subs unless it’s just for music. Does Marantz have a similar option? Not asking for a friend! Thanks!!

Hi Youthman, thank you for this very informative video. I have some question and/or issues about my particular audio set up. I have a denon avr x4000 but it comes with this same audyssey software. I wish I could send a picture of my audio system but here is a plain explanation: Music Stereo system, as a 2.1 but with 3 speakers each channel and 2 subs, in my garage. Main: JamoC93-Denon-JamoC93- subwoofer. Denon's Zone 2: Elac UniFi Ub5-Crown1002-Elac UniFiUb5. Denon's Zone 3: KLH Quincy-Onkyo-KLH Quincy- subwoofer. Can Audyssey calibrate this as a 2 channel set up?

I am awaiting patiently for this receiver to arrive by Fedex. Replacing my 5 mono block Rotel rb960 amps matched with Rotel RSP 1570. Wife is complaining about stereo gear taking up so much space in the apartment. Loved your video cuz Rotel has never had any kind of room correction ever. Not their thing, I guess. Anyways, I have a 5.1 channel setup. Would it be worthwhile for me to bi amp my front three channels with this unit? Sorry, it is off topic.

Audyssey works, but very few people calibrate properly. For the best results it's all about detail, mathematics and precision, and trust me I know, that turns 85% of people off. Most people think they just put the calibration mic in each seat and run the setup, nope. I'll try to make this brief, in every speaker layout guide it states (if possible) to have each speaker equidistant from each other. When I achieved this I had a true center listening position (confirmed and measured by Audyssey, L/R same distance, LS/ RS same distance, LSB/ RSB same distance, TMHL/TMHR all the same distance from the center listening positio), thats step 1. Next I built a (Level) mic stand with the Audyssey recommended measuring positions which are, 1. center listening position (all at ear "level" btw) 2. 2 ft. to the right from center 3. 2 ft. to the left from center 4. 2 ft. forward from position #3 5. 2 ft. forward from position #1, the center position 6. 2 ft. forward from position #2 7. Audyssey recommends 6 inches behind the center position and 1 foot to the left (3 1/2 inches behind worked for me) 8. Audyssey recommends 6 inches behind the center position and 1 foot to the right (3 1/2 inches behind worked for me) I went to home depot and bought 2 boards / planks and built something that looks like a crucifix with holes drilled in it using 2 screws and bolts to stabilize it at 90 degree angles. Level it (with a level) on a stool or something flat using a counter weight. On the bottom of the calibration mic there is a threaded hole where you can screw the mic on to a bolt, get the matching size bolt to screw in through the bottom of the holes you drill. With the horizontal board drill a hole at the center and the one approx. 2 ft to the right then another 2 ft from center to the left. On the vertical board, drill holes 2 ft forward from the center for listening positions 4, 5, & 6, now the crucifix is a big T, counter weight the back end when measuring. And finally drill the holes for the last 2 positions 6 inches (or 3 1/2 in my case) and 1 foot to either size from the center on the horizontal board. My results were simply amazing, for me it's all about sound sweeps, having sound transfer seamlessly from speaker to speaker, so much so it fools your mind. Now Audyssey is not perfect, switch the measurement from feet to meters, it measures in .03m increments and some times (if you have a trained ear) you have to make .01m adjustments like I did on my surround backs (+.01m each). Pick up the old THX demo disc, put on the dts-ES Matrix 6.1 Jungle Sound sample or the Star Wars: Episode 1 Pod Race scene to test the sound communication between your fronts and surrounds to surround backs, mix it with Dolby Surround for surround back channel separation. Finally set LFE+Main and 60 hz crossovers for fronts and center channels and 80 hz for all surrounds, I left the Atmos heights at Audyssey recommended settings and you are set.

I agree with you 100%. I also read that you shouldn't mess with distance and level after calibration as this would mess your delay. I also went into the rabbit hole of having everything equidistant and buying an spl meter. I found the audyssey app not very user friendly with very little explanation. Do you have the midrange compensation on or off? Do you use roll off 1 or 2? I use the filter at 500 hz on all speakers and leave it alone for the sub, what do you do? My sub and right front speaker are set at the wrong distance, for the sub 1 meters difference when i checked with the tape measure, for the right front speaker about 10cm, should i rerun the calibration?
@zyndeco6659
@zyndeco6659 Жыл бұрын
Hello, 3 years late, my receiver doesn't support the Audyssey app so I can't answer. But everything I said about the calibration process still holds true. I recently added 7 channel amplification (170 watts per @ 6 ohms) and let the AVR handle the Atmos channels and O...M...G!!!! The one thing I did different that COMPLETELY changed the game was distance match AND Level match both subs (physically moving and adjusting volume knob until the calibration results were equal), I don't think I could get my system to sound any better! With 100% of the delays working together, I even get lost in listening to music now, its crazy good. I have the old mirage OMD 15 & 5s omni directional speaker 7 channel bed layer and it lives up to its name.

I have a Marantz 6006, however, it seems to have no dynamic range at all. Ran Audyssey numerous times, also tried to setup sound envelope myself through manual config. Still sounds like an AM radio. I'm piping in my Marantz 2252B and using that for the front 2 speakers, and the other 5 channels I am using the 6006 as normal. I wish I knew if I am spoiled by 1970's amp tech, or is my 6006 just not working well.

Also Audyssey's 'Dynamic volume' should be left off initially until the user gets comfortable with the calibration. And can be turned back on later for nighttime listening, etc... It's one of the choices Audyssey gives you right after doing a calibration. I think it defaults to off and should be left there... Just wanted to mention it since I think you skipped showing that screen-choice that pops up after the calibration... Great video for newbies!

Sir, Audyssey room correction is enough. Not needed SPL/Radioshack . I did several times experiment with Audyssey 8 positions and after I used SPL (for adjusting Each speaker @75 db at C weight slow loop.). After few days I just ran only audyssey 8 positions. I did not trim with SPL. I just kept all settings what audyssey did in the calibration and correction(I mean after completed Audyssey I did not change any settings). Then I found something special in my sound system. I listened lossless data in my musics. If you need to change crossover settings then put them 10 or 20 hz above after calibration (80 hz not necessary). Your experience is true. Once try it. Note1: Before the calibration you need to choose following details: 1.Don't use lfe+main. 2.Use lfe only . 3. Keep Bass management 120hz. Note2: After calibration you must set that all speakers are small.

Congrats MOTO! Building a home theater takes a lot of research, but it’s a lot of fun. I’m honored that my videos I’ve helped inspire you and hopefully are providing valuable information along your journey. I don’t have a lot of varied experience when it comes to projectors. I started with a Panasonic AE3000u, then upgraded to the 8000u and now that Panasonic is no longer making home theater projectors, I have upgraded to an Epson 5040UB and have been extremely pleased with its brightness, colors and overall performance. Likewise, I started out with an Elite 103” cinescope Screen and when I had my front cabinet redesigned, I upgraded to a 150” DIY screen and use Seymour Center Stage XD and could not be happier with the quality and performance.

The main reason I asked is because I'm contemplating on buying a Denon x3600h, one of the reason being Audessey, the other is DV passthrough and eARC which I currently don't have. I have an Onkyo AVR txnr747 I bought in 2015 which I'm quite happy with from sound perspective. I just have a humble 5.2.2 HT to power. Audessey says my suborder is 25 foot from my listening position when in actual fact its about 9 ft, however it sounds right. When I changed the subwoofer to actual distance, it just didn't sound right. Also the front sound stage especially the centre speaker just does sound as good as the back soundstage. Like the rear is more powerful than the rear. The cohesion though is great how do I address the issues without making drastic changes..like bumping the center to way up in the plus range, which is completely out from the rest of the settings.

Now to my question, At what level should the master volume on the processor be set when starting the Audyssey XT32 calibration ? Can Audyssey XT32 correction be limited to below the 200 Hz range, is there an option to set that and then calibrate ? My processor is a Marantz 8088 if that helps.

Thank you for the suggestion. I just change the original video to unlisted so it will no longer show up on KZfaq. I also added updated video to the description. It does not matter what your initial volume is set to when you begin Audyssey. Yes you can easily add a “curtain” to limit what frequencies Audyssey corrects using the Audyssey App ($20). Another big feature with the Audyssey App is each calibration can be saved and easily loaded so you can run Audyssey with one set of settings, rerun it again with different settings and easily switch between the two.
