-Third episode of the short-lived 1979-80 NBC game show "Mindreaders" hosted by Dick Martin with celebrity captains Nipsey Russell and Patty Duke Astin. Only the pilot (recently aired by Buzzr) and one other episode from December 13, 1979 is known to exist. Because other YT uploads of this episode are in terrible quality, I figured I'd put mine up.

Much better quality than any of the other copies circulating on YT. Also, the opening of one other episode with Brett Somers and Bill Daily also exists.

I used to watch Mindreaders when I was a child. It had a cool set. Several months after it was canceled, its theme music was used on the March 1980 unsold pilot Puzzlers hosted by then KNBC 4 meteorologist Pat Sajak. Less than two years later, he would become the new host of Wheel of Fortune. On the commercials, Paul Winchell is the voice of the Scrubbin' Bubbles leader. The Parkay magarine ad features 'Alice' star Vic Tayback.

Why did NBC wipe this show, but leave shows like “Card Sharks“ and “Password Plus” intact? they all aired around the same time.

It may be that Mark Goodson wanted to wipe the show. It was a weak concept and he got saddled with a weak host.

Well considering Goodson/Toddman Productions was one of the biggest/most well-known companies in the game show field, if not the top spot, you'd think Mark Goodson would've recognized a dud before the show made it to air. If he wanted "Mindreaders" wiped because he thought it was a weak concept, surely it wouldn't have taken him all the way to when the show was airing to realize what a dud it was.

This was a pretty cool Game Show I didn't catch it when it ran back then i was working during the day & my mom couldn't afford a VCR ( especially in the 70's bc they were way to expensive.) so this one is a catch up for me, i did watch another one that was posted with the lady that played Ted Baxter's wife on that episode & it had the commercials. ( like this one )

Why was Mindreaders neglected after the end of its 1979-80 run on NBC, especially when there were 20 episodes left when the series aired its final episode on January 11, 1980?

It was getting killed by The Young And The Restless on CBS and The $20,000 Pyramid on ABC.

It was neglected because it was easily one of Mark Goodson’s weakest efforts.

@@megamanj2004X It was indeed pretty much the only hiccup in the Goodson-Todman catalog, considering they did so well elsewhere with The Price Is Right and Family Feud.

Maybe part of the reason why this show bombed is that Dick is about a sheet a half to the wind (not the full two sheets but he def didn’t have water with his lunch 🥴)

He definitely was way out of place on this show. Although he was better on the short-lived show The Cheap Show, which came out not long before Mindreaders commenced. On The Cheap Show it allowed him to be himself a bit more than it did here.

When this was aired on NBC daytime, I did not watch this episode because I was at Foothill Developmental School at 140 S. Fifth Avenue in Monrovia, CA (a lane shy of Arcadia, CA, my attempt 18 of 20 & two days shy of my final attempt).
