Happy Birthday, Edward Norton (August 18, 1969)
Always insightful and articulate about the craft he loves, Edward Norton who trained in the Meisner Technique talks, among other things, about an aspect rarely discussed in "public arenas": The Importance of Text Analysis.
Indeed, once the actor knows how to respond authentically moment to moment, how to fulfill the blocs of dramatic structure, it is time to dwell into an ACTOR's Text Analysis (which is different from a director's text analysis). It is about boiling down the complexity of a whole text (a scene, a script, a play...) to something act-able and personalis-able to each actor through choices.
All this preparative work is done prior to being on set, so actors can be free to then let go and connect. The mistake would be to believe that all one has to do is connect: In the moment connection is the bottom line, but there is more exciting things than the bottom line!!!
