For those looking for an example of a successful armed insurrection on US soil I highly recommend the book The Fighting Bunch: The Battle of Athens and how World War Two Veterans won the only successful armed rebellion since the revolution. Amazing book and an amazing story. I would love to see the two of you do a collaboration on this story! Keep of the good work!

If you're going talk about Haiti, other colonies had Slave Revolts too. In Jamaica there were several. Runaway slaves known as Maroons formed a communities, and waged a successful guerilla war against the British who signed a treaty with them guaranteeing their independence. They're still there, proudly retaining their independence from Jamaica.

15:20 What you're describing are called Dragoons, which were mounted infantry. Cavalry fought from the horseback, mainly with swords and lances. About what you say on shooting from horseback. In the 16th and 17th centuries there was a maneouvre called the caracol, which was carried out as follows. First line rides up to the enemy and fires their pistols. As they turn and go to the back of the formation to reload, second line rides up to fire their pistols. Three to four lines were usually used. In the 1620s, the Swedish Army under Gustavus Adolphus modified this tactic, instead of reloading their pistols, they drew their swords and pressed on the charge. this was further developed under Carl XI after the Svanian War in the 1670s 1680s, to abolish all firearm use. Instead the cavalrymen formed an extremely tight wedge, they had to sit knee behind knee - your right knee behind the next guy's left knee and your left knee in front of that guy's right knee if you were in the left hand wing, and vice versa for the right hand wing - and the entire squadron charged like that with their swords pointing forward past the horses' heads. A very successful tactic.

24:30 America now reminds me of the problems the Weimar republic was facing: Street fighting, a judicative that has been politiciced, high ranking politicians that play against and harm the system for their own gains, a power struggle between states/provinces and federal government, total deadlock in politics, people with less than 25% of ellegible voters' votes winning elections. Eerily similiar.

As a german who studys history, I think there is much righte and much wrong with the parallel between the US and Weimar righte now. Problem is I dont know to much about your situation right now, but I think all the actual cornerstones and what the debates are about ect. are very different from weimar, only like as you describe it (correctly) rough 'shape' of events is similar to weimar. But its a really different situation still, in my view. (Syr for my bad english)

It might remind you, but I wonder why. What street fighting? Please a couple of judicial decisions in Weimar that have been overly political. Please name a country where high ranking politicians did not play the system for their own gains. Where was the power struggle between states and the federal government in Weimar? In what way was Weimar deadlocked in any way resembling the USA?

I find that interesting that you say that the civil war generals were just playing war compared to their European counterparts. In Sherman's thoughts on the grand strategy of the union(I believe that's the name) he mentions at the end that when he toured europe many of the generals with some exceptions generally by nation were scoffed at about his strategic ideas and what industrialized war looks like. Particularly the French he mentions and it's almost prophetic for world War 1 as when he was writing this it was 1880s. These generals would of been setting the culture and plan for their own military for the next several decades and it sounds like they are basing their strategy on espirit de corps and superior training and that cavalry charges will still be relevant but not really that based on realism. Although it may have been his bias and I may be interpreting in a way with the larger context and fit my own confirmation bias

Many years ago I read the accounts of the Battle of Steptoe Butte and the subsequent battles that lead from that. I was looking for something else and ran across them by accident in the Adjutant Generals records for the region, fascinating accounts from all sides involved and hand written in that classic, nearly unintelligible, cursive of the day. The accounts were very different than what I had expected. I got the records on microfilm through my public library from The Library of Congress. Along this line I highly recommend looking into the battles that occurred between the Native Americans and the "authorities" in the NW and in particular the unfortunate incident at the Whitman Mission. It set the tone of the whites perspective on the Native Americans from that point onward. It was a HORRIBLE misunderstanding that lead to many of the later dealings between Native Americans and western settlers from that point onward. Very sad... Love your channel, keep up the good work!

The talk about historical amnesia got me thinking about an event locally to me. This month is the 125th anniversary of the September 10, 1897 Lattimer Massacre. The event involved a sheriffs posse armed with Winchesters murdering 19 unarmed striking miners and wounding several dozen more. Most were shot in the back as they ran away. It speaks volumes to the struggle for workers rights and how racism played a role in that struggle and yet isn't even a footnote in most textbooks.

Three thoughts I had while listening to this were- Re successful uprisings: Although not the question, maybe worth considering is the role of even unsuccessful uprisings in making oppression more expensive, and thus eventually untenable. Re early Cavalry: I was at a firehouse museum some time ago and was surprised by the distinct possibility that the horses were more trained, better equipped, and cared for than the firefighters of old. -I.E. At fire events, a vet was required to be present, and all industries of a certain size w/ stables were required to provide extra space for horses at very short notice -I'm confident there was much more. People were easy to put on the back of a cart. Re "A Puritan view of keeping/bearing arms" , but not really related: I had been fascinated by the spiritual/religious requirement of Sikh people to carry weapons at all times. I think this requirement has included women as well, and for a very long time. A "casual Sikh" guy I knew was unable to tell me if there was any long established dogma(s) regarding an intentionally armed entire population.

Many of the commanders on both sides were from West Point and also fought in the Mexican-American War. I wouldn't quite describe them as "adorable," but early volunteer armies were like two mobs fighting as one observer described. However, by 1865, the Union army (and Confederate) by this point fleshed out the dregs and arguably had the most experienced, hardened core of officers in the world, with an army of what used to be green volunteers now veterans, in the number of 2.5 million. Not to mention they were fresh on the new form of warfare (trench warfare) which they were heavily engaged in the last half of the war. The armies of 1864-5 could have steam rolled all of the Europe.

I'm sure the Prussians would have disagreed, if they could fit the US in between beating Denmark (1864), Austria (1866) and France (1870-71). Not to mention the British, French, Turkish and Russians had experience of the Crimean War (1854) and the Italians were fighting their Wars of Independence (1849-66). Regrettably, Europe has rarely been lacking recent military experience.
@WestTNConfed

@@tokinsloff312 Most of those were quick and decisive wars that had more influence on tactics than strategy. The Union had to build an army from the ground up and like the German army of 1930s it was a child of the era, not a bygone era. It was an army of material and industry. They were still mass cavalry charging in Europe up to WW1 when the the U.S. discovered in folly a half century early.
@tokinsloff312
@tokinsloff312 Жыл бұрын
@@WestTNConfedThe Union Army's main infantry weapon was still the rifled musket, capable of 2-3 shots a minute. The Prussian's main infantry weapon was the needle gun, capable of 6 shots a minute. Interestingly, cavalry charges continued into WW2, including a successful one by the US 26th Cavalry in the Philippines in 1942. The Polish Cavalry seem to take the honour of the last charge in a battle between regular forces in 1945. It was successful and decisive. Sadly, the stories of them deliberately charging armoured vehicles aren't true, although they may have done it accidently.
@WestTNConfed
@WestTNConfed Жыл бұрын
@@tokinsloff312 Thank you. I was going to mention that in face of the Chassepot or the Dreyse Needle Gun, I wonder what fire arm the War Department would have wanted to equip the army with. The industrial capacity was there to outfit the entire army with new arms, such as the Sharpes Rifle or Spencer Rifle. There already regiments and brigades outfitted with repeating rifles in the closing of the Civil War, albeit these were specially requested by either commander or rankers.

Karl, the cavalry you were describing was how Nathan Bedford Forrest used his. But I and a few other niche historians actually consider him a "mounted infantry" commander. Instead of carbines, he fitted them with rifles and used them as one would use infantry, except unlike traditional infantry, the horse gave them superior mobility and manuevering, hence is why he is credited as one of innovators of "mobile infantry" i.e. motorized infantry. Atun-Shei was sort of right, but instead of charging with sabres, pitched cavalry battles involved revolvers and short arms. Confederate cavalry early on ditched their sabres for revolvers and later on the Union cavalry would do the same.

While the historian has to rely on primary sources sometimes those primary sources need to be either questioned or taken with a sometimes large grain of salt. Personal accounts may be edited either willingly or simply because of faulty memory. Official accounts can misleading due to cover ups or the writer simply not having complete information. Perhaps a classic case of the "official" account versus reality is the Egyptian account of the Battle of Kadesh. Which portrayed the Pharaoh (Ramses l or ll iirc) smiting the Hittites. I wonder if the Eguptian court had a position that equates to a public relations office or minister of propaganda. Even today we see events spun by parties with an agenda through social media. A case in point would be the events in Kenosha (1) two years ago. When the story broke the narrative was that Jacob Blake had only been attempting to breakup a fight at a block party. When in reality the police were there because of a 911 call and to execute an outstanding arrest warrant on Mr Blake. The point is one must always be wary of primary sources. Especially with current events. 1) I happen to live there so some of the narrative that has been spun from both sides tends to piss me off.

The biggest blunder of the Civil War after Picket's charge would be the Confederacy continuing to fight after losing both Vicksburg and Gettysburg within hours. The Union had full control of the Mississippi, cutting off the western rebel states, and the rest of the war was just a gruesome exercise in bloodletting and destruction which wrecked the economies of the South. Yes, this is an oversimplification, but by this point, the logistical situation of the Confederate troops made any southern victory a pure fantasy.

On the issue of our rights that you mentioned about defending one and being grouped with others I agree it's a travesty. I'm not pro trump but I'm super pro gun and libertarian. I want everyone from minorities, to all people of political parties, classes and etc to be able to be armed if they choose to do so and be armed with what they want. I'm very Christian and encourage people to find Christ but I will not force anyone to do so. I'm not in favor of abortion but I'm not in favor of it being outlawed either. I encourage adoption but it's your body and your choice to do what you will with it. Same thing with being gay or if you want to change your gender. I don't agree with it but do what you want just don't infringe on other people's rights. Just don't force your believes down people's throats. The war on drugs has failed and drugs won just like prohibition of alcohol. Maybe it's time to legalize them and stop imprisoning users and give them help they need and start setting up places where it's safe to use them. When I tell people these things MAGA people can't believe I can be Christian, pro gun, but pro doing what you want with your body and not very pro cop. It blows their mind. Same thing with liberals they think I'm one of their own until I get to pro gun views and it blows their mind. I believe it's time to cut spending, shrink the federal government, and just let people live their own way just as long as they don't infringe on other people's rights. I believe we are at a crossroads of whether or not we are gonna be a free country or not. People of this nation need to think hard about this decision because there is grave consequences either way.

Just removing guns from the country as a whole is obviously neither the solution nor even possible, but what is possible is red flag laws, let's say someone films themselves with a bag full of dead cats while saying that they are going to do a school shooting, most people would call that a red flag, also if you have a tendency towards violence, that would be a red flag, and with the majority of mass shooters, there are such red flags, red flags that should be acted upon.

The Battle of the Crater. The troops assigned had been specifically trained not to go into the resulting crater. Then for honors sake the units got switched out and into the crater they went. Of course the ultimate insane military event of the American Civil War (1) was Fort Sumter. If the South had continued to play the political game they may have achieved a political solution. 1) To call it a civil war is a misnomer. I know we have been calling it that but a civil war is two (or more) factions fighting for ploitical and cultural control of a nation or society. The American Civil War was in actuality a war to attempt to secure the political independence of the South.

@@randymagnum143 As I recall the US Colored Troops (era appropriate term) were replaced with a white unit due to the units commander feeling their honor had been sullied. The unit's commander then got drunk rather than attend the briefing.

Sounds a small group is trying very hard to keep the two party system in place while both "sides" of that same coin keep expanding the federal government... Federal political power thrives on division and chaos... Sounds like us citizens are doing exactly what we are supposed to be doing 😁

I disagree. State power is petty power as we have seen in govt and business. While federal govt is aspirational , state government is by it creation conservative as it trying to take any power it can find that's not delegated to the federal govt. Scavenger power, power for the baseless in most cases.
