It got pretty cold the other night, but I didn't think it was cold enough to frost - I was wrong! Several of my plants had frost damage when I went out to check the garden this morning. Regardless I did get another lovely harvest and was able to make Dan's favourite Jardiniare pickles. I hope you enjoy coming along with me!

Chelsea, a quick trick for keeping your high tunnel warm at night. Get yourself some small barrels. Plastic ones will work. Paint them black on the outside. Fill them up with water and leave them in the greenhouse. The sun during the day heats up the water. And then the heat is released throughout the night into the greenhouse. This works extremely well. And you don’t have to pay any Hydro.

We have been evacuated with the Kelowna fires. We had 40 pounds of peaches we were going to can this last weekend. We have been sharing the peaches with our lovely beautiful friends who took our large brood in, (fur babies too!) as well as with their neighbours. It has been lovely to watch gardening, food prep and canning videos right now. Activities that are normal and familiar in the midst of all this. That cauliflower head is huge! Strawflowers make beautiful long lasting arrangements . Maybe a wreath or table centres.

Use a 55 gal barrel to make a wood stove for the green house. You don't have to heat it up to the point to be able to cook on it like your kitchen wood stove, but a small fire would be enough to keep the temp above freezing inside the tunnel.

55 F would feel like the arctic for me right now in Oklahoma. Currently my heat index is 121 F. 49 c. So grateful for AC. Your garden is just lovely!!

In desperation I started using a bucket, filled 3/4 with water with a ramp leading up to it. Sprinkle some sunflower seed in the water (it floats) and leave some on the ramp (you can use peanutbutter to stick them). You will cath a LOT of rodents in one day, guaranteed.

I just boiled down corn cobs, onion and garlic skins plus some broccoli stems, celery leaves and carrot ends to make a veggie broth to freeze with some bay leaves, salt pepper. My local store has celery on sale and I purchased three, chopped and froze for winter soups and stews. I also purchased your cookbook on Saturday from Amazon, I was lucky they only has 6 left. Love your channel. Your garden is beautiful.

Stems of broccoli and cauliflower can be used for dipping, just like carrots and celery. Cauliflower also makes a decent pickle--❤ bread & butter recipe, especially a mix>>cauliflower, carrot, cuke, onion, radish. And yellow squash, zucchini as medallions is really pretty. And tasty.😊

Great pickle 'salad', in a bread & butter recipe; cauliflower, cukes. Carrot, onion, radish. And anything else you want to add. Can also do yellow squash, zucchini ; slice in discs. Really pretty. Good on a sandwich.😊

Wow! I can`t imagine those temps this time of year. I`m looking at 96 right now 4pm. But your sunflowers are beautiful and you`ve certainly been blessed with a bounty this year! I pretty much have your same reaction even when I see something peeking thru the soil after planting. Hope I never lose that thrill! I`m gonna try your jardiniere recipe..sounds great! Those temps sound glorious! We have a stalled front sitting over top of us in Southeast Missouri and have heat indexes at 110 degrees with 100% humidity. So dangerous.

Hi Chelsea, I’m kinda new on your channel but so far just lovin’ it! I live in Western Washington so I understand the scare of fires in BC. Do you have a place to go in case you have to bug out? I have my home along with my brother but if you ever find yourself in need, you are welcome here. I live just SW of Seattle, the good part! Hehee! When I was only 5-6 years old, our house that was being built was completely destroyed by fire. We were living in the home even tho we had no facilities or electricity. That was in the mid 60’s and no phone lines out there! No cells either obviously! I Pray for you and all the families that you will be safe and keep your beautiful farm. Also, could you show what the Watermelon Pickles that your daughter was making, please! I’ve heard of them but not actually seen them! God Bless You All! Jilli, neighbors to your South

I would have had to leave the garlic in the jardinière, and in fact add a bunch more - pickled garlic is scrumptious! Killer root cellar, very safe in storms, I'll bet.

Patty pans, and zucchini for that matter, are harvested much smaller in South Africa, at about 2 to 3 inches.

@catracampolieto… Patty pan squash are wonderful…they have a very buttery flavor (my opinion)…I pick them when they are only about 2 to 3 inches across …small & very tender. Can do anything with them… sauté, steam, add in stir-fry, pickled with other veggies. I bet you will love them.💖

It works in summer for cooler air & with ter for warmer air. Then you just have to heat up the difference .

Here in Central Washington State it is so smoky I can't see the mountain across the canyon (about 1/2 mile away). The fire in Spokane and the fires up in Canada are so bad I find myself praying for rain to clean the air all day long. It is hard to do anything outside. Just grateful no fires near my home. I have lived through at least 6 fires here in my little canyon, I have never unpacked my pictures or important papers since the first fire. I am a seasoned evacuee.

Chelsea go with what God gave us. Go deeper in your high tunnel to below frost line. THEN, dig down Into that steady earth temperature . Lay down perforated 6" pipe, top with burlap or landscape fabric. Now cover back up with dirt. Put a box fan Inside the hi tunnel & pull that warmer air I to the hi tunnel.😊 geo-thermal.

Awesome harvest. Your thinking of frost and we are looking at 95-98 degrees f tomorrow with a heat index of 114-120f. Crazy weather here in Jackson missouri!! My fall garden is going to suffer.

You need to get you a four-wheeler and ride around on cuz you do a lot of walking around to check on the cows and you need a four wheeler and that way you can pull your little wagon with it with your produce and everything in it. ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤

One person used carrot tops for pesto and liked it. The winter will be hard if mice are going inside this early. Keep storing up.

I know you said you were done with relishes, but I think you’d enjoy a Southern style chow-chow. It’s a relish made from cabbage, green tomatoes, and bell peppers. It was kind of a “save everything before the garden freezes” food. Traditionally it’s eaten on top of beans with some cornbread on the side, but it’s good on a lot of things.

We used to keep our carrots in a box of soil. It wasn't really a root cellar but a dark cold building tho carrots went into the box of dirt and I remember I was always happy when my parents or grandparents asked me to 'dig up' some carrots.

We had a huge fire season when I lived in zone 3. It was a smokey August with nighttime lows in the 30S F. I came to the conclusion that the smoke cover caused the cooler nights. Your garden is beautiful.

Chelsea your harvest warms my heart. Our island is still recovering so still no local vegetables for a while. I have squash envy! I also noticed over your should a giant cabbage. Do you know how many kilos/pounds your cabbages get to? Also I saw some one else posted in the comments a question I had maybe you could answer it on a video. How do you keep the mice out of your root cellar??? Thank you again your video brought me alot of joy on a rainy day.

Hi Chelsea, we're just South of you in Washington State and on the Puget Sound. Heavy smoke moved in yesterday late morning. I can't imagine being on the front lines as the smell was horrible with eyes and throats burning. My heart and prayers go out to our Canadian neighbors. ❤

You might have a hard time with certain veggies but your cabbage and carrots and cauliflower and herbs look amazing. You put so much love into the homestead no wonder your harvest is plentiful. There now: time in the garden, yours or mine, always lifts the spirits. Frost is damaging your veg while in Kansas City we are having heat index temps of 110 to 120F damaging ours. Makes you really appreciate those 'regular' years.

I canned a " salad in a jar" last year. Tomato, cucumber, onions in a salted/sugar brine. Boy was it good to pop a jar in the middle of the winter!

Oh my! I can’t imagine living in zone three. I garden almost year-round in zone 8. Your garden is beautiful every year. We deal with extreme humidity, high bug pressure and extreme heat.

Have you tried compost piles in your high tunnel saw this done . The compost heats up and generates heat for the high tunnel might be something to look at.

Mice ate all my beets. That PW measuring cup must have come from the states. Walmart carries her products up here, but not on such a large scale as in the US, and I haven't seen that measuring cup up here. I'm a bit obsessed with the Pioneer Woman line.

I received your cookbook today. So glad Mom chose to do large font. I cannot wait to try your recipes. My husband was even perusing it tonight! Strawflowers are so lovely! We love squash, any kind of winter squash, your Holiday Squash sounds divine! I cannot wait to try the mint squares and lemon bars. I LOVE mint. I think volunteers get bigger & better than a purposeful planted plant. I’m loving my steam canner this year. A time saver and for this older lady, way easier to manipulate it. I enjoyed the video very much. You had a WONDERFUL cauliflower year though. Sans the green beans. You were hit this year with family stuff, and it’s understandable- hopefully next year will be better.

Thanks for mentioning the fires Chelsea. My husband and I were evac’d on Friday night from our summer property in the Shuswap. It’s been a five day ordeal, and while we’re back on the coast our little summer farms is still at risk. We had to find new homes for our chickens and abandon our garden with 88 tomatoes plants not to mention peppers, zucchini and corn, etc. I remember watching when you were evacd and never want to see anyone go through that nightmare. Anyway, thanks for mentioning it. ☹️

Lordy Lordy, those were some big zucchinis!! Beautiful though! :) What beautiful carrots too, Chelsea. Shame you had to pull them all up already. What little stinkers! I made giardiniera for my roommate this year. She let it rest for about 5 weeks and I just sampled it with her yesterday and it came out so good :) What a lovely treat!
