Such an amazing encouragement to all us mommas! “All I need to do is continuously show up for my child.” Yes, that’s for everyone. We show up happy with a good attitude each day and that will show our children a wonderful example!

My son started out fast in AAR 1, but by spring of his Kindergarten year we had slowed down considerably. There are times it takes over a week for him to get through one lesson. We review the blend cards daily, then we only do about 10 minutes of actually reading from the program because it’s all he can handle. I also have him pick a story from a previous Level 1 book and re-read it to me to build confidence and fluency. He likes that part. I have seen so much progress, and more importantly, he enjoys trying to read on his own and doesn’t get frustrated. My daughter did public school kindergarten and they pushed her too hard to read before she was ready and it took 3 years of super gentle encouragement for her to enjoy reading on her own. Now, she’s in AAR 3 and goes through a lesson in 1-2 days and just loves it. Stay the course and trust the process - your daughter will learn it and you will thank yourself for not pushing her, but keeping it fun and unpressured.

It's very interesting to hear your take on All About Reading. We've been using it with our first child, and I also haven't liked how slowly my child has progressed. I also have several issues with how to sequences some different things and it does seem to make some reading aspects more complicated than it needs to be. But I do see progress and that this child is learning to read, so we've been sticking with it for the sake of continuity and that it is working, albeit slower. We also ditched the tiles for the same reason, but instead of using the app, we just use a white board with different coloring markers. Way way easier. I've been using a different curriculum with my next child (which my first child could not follow directions well enough to do this curriculum) and that child is really learning to read quite a bit faster. Each kids is SO different! I love how you're adapting things to work for your daughter and just setting reasonable goals and enjoying the process!

Just wanted to encourage you! This is such a raw video, and I appreciate your honesty!! Reading is a process. I have a 6 year old 1st grader. She had been talking WELL since she was 15 months old. I assumed she'd be a natural reader. She's not. It's been a process. She's taking time memorizing and internalizing her "eigh", ee, oa, special sounds. There are a lot of nuances in the English language. You and your daughter are doing stupendous! My daughter asked me to read 6 stories today! I was floored.❤❤❤ So press on! She's getting it!! Thank you. Thank you. Thank you for this video!!! So appreciate you.

Hi Olga, first of all I find your videos so inspiring and they give me great motivation, I appreciate them so much. I have a 5 year old and am also teaching her how to read. We have been doing a program called toddlers can read and I recommend this so much, it has worked well for us. Again thank you for all your videos

If you are interested in supplemental material to help with phonics and blends, Secret Stories do a wonderful job giving a fun visual and a way to help them remember the blends!

Thank you for sharing! I was really looking forward to hearing about how teaching reading is going for you. I have a five year old and three year old too. I was so nervous about teaching reading that I've purchased three different curriculums (Kinderphonics, The Ordinary Parent's Guide to Teaching Reading and P.A.L.S). I decided to take it slow and we are starting the year focusing on letter recognition and then we will move on to letter sounds. Thanks for sharing the tips on how to use Explode the Code with a preschooler. When we get to letter sounds we will be using that series. My goal is to teach both my boys reading together, to make it easier on me. We will see how that goes.

I have had to re program my brain too when it comes to hitting a struggle or a “wall” sometimes it takes a bit for a kid to grasp something and it does not mean the curriculum isn’t working or isn’t the right fit. It’s so tempting to think something is wrong with what we are using when they struggle but that’s not always the case. :) my experience with teaching readjng has been that it is full of peaks and plateaus

I was just looking at the preschool math at home program last night and I think when my youngest daughter is a little older will probably work through that

Thank you for this video! I’m really curious about the differences between Playing Preschool and Gentle and Classical Preschool. I already own Playing Preschool and was planning to use it with my younger one when he turns 3 but I’d love to see a video comparing the two OR just get your honest opinion. Thanks :-)

Hey girl heeey! Love the update and thank you for being so real. I got rid of AAR because it seemed easy at first but now I’m regretting that decision and am planning to repurchase and stick with it. Also, you said there are recordings for the memory verses and statement cards for G&C??? Where can I find those???

Thinking ahead for my 3 year old who also has/had a speech delay and pronouncing certain words similar to that of a 2 year old. Hoping to start speech therapy with her this October but this is something that I will consider when I start doing book work with her. I appreciate all the advice as well. Thank you! 💕

Have you considered pinwheels? It’s made by SLP’s so it might help her.

I’m currently doing Playing Preschool and Preschool Math at Home with my three year old! She loves it. We’re almost done with On the Farm. It has taken us a long time to get to this point though (started in January). Sometimes it takes us 3 weeks to get through a unit completely. I sprinkle several other things into her homeschool too so it ends up being a lot with all the other things we do. We do Good and the Beautiful Little Hearts & Hands Fields & Flowers currently too. We’re having lots of fun!

This is what I did with my son. We started at around 3, just because he wanted to do school like his older sister. Those 2 curriculums set such a great foundation. He is 6 now and in MWC 3. His mental math is amazing and he appreciates poetry and songs.

I think you should look into Jady A . videos about how to teach a child to read.... my 3 year old knows all his sounds and blends and my 4 year old is reading Bob books 📚

I was looking for this. My son goes to school, pre k, but he is speech delayed as well. This is my concern in terms of learning to read. I was looking for ideas as to what to do at home along with school since he needs all the help he can get.

I know exactly how you feel EXACT same issues but I trust in the Lord with all my heart and lean not on my own understanding Nothing is too hard for God ! I pray over my baby every day I just keep consistent and I know one day it will click just like it will click for you daughter You are blessed to be a homeschooling mom that can exactly pinpoint what is going on with your children and make necessary changes if needed There are kids that pretend they can read and slide by to the 6th grade before realizing they can’t really read It’s frustrating for sure but the book of James tell us if any of us is lacking wisdom we need to ask and the Lord will give it to us I also pray for patience because it’s HARD especially when it seems they are grasping and the then all of a sudden they are somewhere else This is God letting us surrender and leave our trust to him I thought I was going to do 2 lessons per week 😂 I am still on lesson two and it’s 6 weeks so whenever we need a break we go back to elemental phonics .. think of all the things you have overcome before .. this too shall pass
