They had something approaching it: the M6 heavy tank. They decided to go with the smaller Sherman because it was easier to fit on a ship. So even if the Abrams had been around they'd have been "Nah, let's use this other one!"

@@jaz1nce960 We could have used it in the Africa campaign as a total death machine where its massively superior range and armor would make it invincible against tanks. Way more useful there with its open plains vs the tighter forests in Europe. It would have been so useful the US would have entered Africa earlier. *Ignoring logistical issues obviously.
