I hope the Saints get the recognition they deserve. As pioneers of punk.

I'm English and I bought that Stranded single because of that SOUNDS review in 1976. It was before Sex Pistols and The Damned. John Peel played Stranded, and about 6 months later, The Saints were on Top Of The Pops. I saw them at the Marquee and they were better than a lot of their English contemporaries. The reason why you two don't know of their importance is because historians are biased and nobody wants to acknowledge a good band from Australia. They also did an appearance on that British drama show The Saint back in the 70's. Don't doubt that these guys were doing it before and better than the British counterparts.

Know You Product is a pretty significant song for Australian music, because it kicked off a whole trend for having a brass section, which led to bands like Hunters & Collectors.

Boys Ed's surname is pronounced "Cooper'' for Kuepper. His solo stuff is fantastic.

Although Brisbane was an extremely conservative place in the 1970's, there was always a wild anarchic underbelly that was kicking against the system - the perfect breeding ground for a nascent punk rock movement. This included wild rock'n'roll dances dating back to the 1950's that were often held in hired out community halls because 'respectable' venues wouldn't touch them. The Saints carried a lot of that in their DNA along with the Detroit sound and other touring English acts in the early 1970's. The Saints definitely predated the Ramones and have documented gigs under the name with the set list that ended up on the first album from before the Ramones formation. However, being in a cultural backwater, it took them a lot longer to scrape together the money and self fund their first release on their own Fatal Records (no-one was willing to take a punt on investing in this band at the time). The Ramones therefore beat them into the studio, but the release of I'm Stranded predated the release of New Rose by The Damned and the Sex Pistols. The Saints sold half their run of singles and sent the other half to interstate and overseas reviewers and labels, which included Sounds magazine, leading to their famous review. As soon as EMI in the UK heard the song, they rang their Australian office in Sydney and sent them up to Brisbane to sign them immediately and get them into the studio as soon as possible. I'm Stranded was re-recorded for wider release through EMI, which is why some people think that it came after the other early punk releases. They also didn't travel to the UK immediately, so they were seen as late and out of fashion by the London crowd by the time they arrived, however by then they (Ed Kuepper particularly) had moved on musically towards the sounds of Know Your Product and the second album Eternally Yours. Prehistoric Sounds, the third and final album of the original lineup started incorporating more jazz influences into the songwriting that hinted towards Kuepper's next project Laughing Clowns - he was so far ahead pop the curve it took until the 2000's for the mainstream to catch up and properly appreciate what he was doing back them. Notably, before they went to the UK, they toured the east coast of Australia, where they influenced a nascent group called Boys Next Door, who renamed themselves as The Birthday Party and fronted by Saints fanboy Nick Cave, they also tore up the rulebook in the UK in the early 1980's. Cave duetted with Bailey in 'Bring It On' and has invited Kuepper to tour as the Bad Seeds Guitarist.

Joe Strummer said in an interview that when they were all packed in a car driving home after a gig John Peel played I'm Stranded and they loved it so much they had to pull over to listen

You can't go past Chris Bailey and any version of The Saints. They put out some great albums. Ed Kuepper released some terrific solo records as well.

There were sooo many great "garage" bands in Australia in the 70s and 80s The Saints, The Scientists, The Hitmen, The Drop Bears, The Lime Spiders, X, to name a few

I recently saw the lead singer Chris on a re-run of a show here called Spicks & Specks, and he called the Sex Pistols a crap band. True Punk rocker

Well I don't know about the first punk band, but they were definitely the first punk band in the world to record their own songs. My favourite is know your product. P. S. One of Australia's first blues bands was Chain, who started in the 60's and their number one hit was black and blue.

What a great band!!! I bought I'm Stranded the day it came out and it changed my life. Ed Kuepper has released over 50 albums to some success. His solo shows or with drummer Jim White are fantastic and he has a brilliant, droll sense of humour. He also has a band called "The Aints" who do Saints and Ed's solo songs, a great band. Two of Ed's best are "Everything I've got belongs to you" and "The way I made you feel", instant classics. We love Chris.

NME said that (I'm) Stranded was the Single of this Week and every Week. I first heard this song on Sydney Radio Station JJ 1540 am in 1976. The Saints had no idea the history they were making at the time. They were joyously oblivious. Isolated in the very backward town called Brisbane, Qld, Australia, under the Fascist rule of Joh Bjelke Petersen. Police were shutting down their gigs and confiscating their equipment. RIP - the late, great Chris Bailey Love ya Mate.

Watching some live Radio Birdman is a good idea too - though I never really listened to their albums.

I was 6 in 1976 and into The Sweet, T-Rex and AC/DC so my dad who was into country music bought me a compilation album called Aus-Rock. Most of it was pretty bland but the last song on it was I’m Stranded. It blew my little mind. I just played that one song on repeat. For my 21st I made some mixed tapes for my party of songs that were important to me and I put I’m Stranded on them about 10 times because I thought it was the most important song in my music development. Love your channel guys.

Jon Savage referenced The Saints in his book, England’s Dreaming. One of the earliest punk bands to get their music on vinyl after Ramones. It’s often thought that Sex Pistols were rallying against Thatcher’s tough rule, The Saints from Brisbane evolved from a similar political landscape with the Bjelke-Petersen ruling QLD with a very conservative iron fist. I bought the I’m Stranded and Eternally Yours LPs in 1978, from the cut-out bin at Rasputin Records in Berkeley. Not one bad song. Chris made me feel like he had written each one just for me. Bought my Radio Birdman LPs at the same store, including a live album with a hand-drawn radio tower on the cover (not a reproduction of hand-drawn art). They’re still in my collection.

Brisbane was extremely conservative back in those days. It still is, and there were other conservative places in Australia at the time, but there used to be a joke that it was 1984 in Queensland long before it was 1984 in the rest of Australia. So it was little wonder that the oppression of the state created a very rebellious crowd. The horns in Know Your Product reminded me of The Easybeats song St Louis, another fantastically energetic song.

Not only from Australia, but from Queensland which in 1976 was a police state run by Joh Bjelke Peterson.

Dave Warner From The Suburbs were doing Punk in the early 70s too. Lots of bands were but they were little known.

One of my absolute favourites! I saw them 4 or 5 times over the years. One of my faves of the early era is Swing for the Crime. Later on The Saints (Chris Bailey) continued but Ed Kuepper continued seperately as The Aints and The Laughing Clowns (amongst others). The Saints kept on with with some great songs that were minor hits. Even Bruce Springsteen recorded a Chris Bailey song: Just Like Fire Would.

If you knew Brisbane of the early 1970's it wouldn't surprise you at all that punk originated there. I have experienced the stranded these guys are singing about. Back in the day the trains would stop running at 10pm and if you missed the last train there was no way home.

You gotta do Radio Birdman they had early 70's punk attitude by the truck load. Their live gigs in Paddo were something else.

The Saints did a cover of the Easybeats song "The Music Goes Round my Head" in the 80's and it was spectacular, and i rarely like covers. Well worth a listen.

Aussies and New Zealand have had some of the best bands in the world but the recording industries in the UK and US have done their best to keep them hidden. The Saints were originally called Kid Galahad and the Eternals in 1973. The band renamed themselves the Saints in 1974, inspired by Leslie Charteris's character The Saint. They are one of the most influential Rock Bands of all time. Everything they did was very organic and unintentional. Their clothes and their hair was very out of step with the music scene they found in London. All the 'Punks' had short hair or spiky hair. They didn't fit in and they didn't care, which was a very Punk attitude. LOL. In 2017, a mural dedicated to the Saints and their song "(I'm) Stranded" was enacted on Roma Street, Brisbane. The mural included lyrics from the song and is situated close to 4 Petrie Terrace, the location previously used by the band as an unlicensed venue.[29] In 2021, the State Library of Queensland named its copy of "(I'm) Stranded" as one of the treasures from its John Oxley Library collection, citing the 7” vinyl single represented a piece of Australian and Queensland music history, influencing generations of bands around the world.[30] Chris Bailey died on April 9, 2022, aged 65.

The Saints were based in London for most of 1977-78. Their second and third albums were recorded there.

I was a little young for The Saints the first time around, but they have certainly been on my radar for over 30 years. They were just outstanding.

'Inala Boys'... the poorest suburb in Brisbane. As a kid we would visit there to play soccer, a terrifying experience... ours shins were 'black and blue' and our goalie had a broken ankle... you could hear the 'crack' from the sideline.

The Saints weren't my cup of tea, but as a former Brisbane girl, I know the part they played in the city's (and nation's) musical legacy. RIP Chris Bailey. Brilliant live band as always. Big crowd of adoring fans. Peter Garrett was his usual self. Everyone from a big gas producing company, politicians and the monarchy copped big serves as well as highlighting environmental and First Nation issues. Public service announcement for both of you (and any interested Thamesmen subscribers too): for many years on National Public Radio (NPR) two Chicago based newspaper rock 'n' roll critics had a show called "Sound Opinions" that did all sorts of reviews of rock music, album deep dives, etc. The show still exists today as a Podcast with the same title, by the way. But they probably have played "I'm Stranded" -- or snippets of that song -- a few hundred times over the years. Check it out, you might like it.

I first heard the Saints UK release of '(I'm) Stranded b/w No time' in mid-1977 (recorded in Oz spring-1976) and it blew my mind (age 15) later buying ALL their records, relatedly I was already into 'underground rock' (USA eclectic genre) a.k.a. 'underground rock' and/or 'pub rock' eclectic genres in the UK (pre-'Anarchy in the UK' Sex Pistols single). Most self-proclaimed 'Punk rockers' I knew in 1977+ didn't consider the Saints to be 'punk music' but liked it (they also didn't consider 'the Stranglers', 'Eddy & the Hot Rods', and 'Johnny Thunders & the Heartbreakers' to be 'Punk Rock' either). I, like many 'punk' musicians in 1974-1976 HATED the adolescently denigrating label 'punk rock' (let alone the cringy late-1977+ 'New Wave' term), as did at first the Saints and half the Stranglers (and many other pre-1978 'underground rock' band members labelled 'punk' and/or 'new wave'). Back in December 1976 (when the Sex Pistols hit the UK charts global notoriety) the term 'Punk' Rock unfortunately stuck precisely because, unlike for a few thousand people in New York since 1974 (or very-obscurely since 1972+ USA only when referring to some, mostly-US, 'hardcore garageband' music circa 1964-1967), the term 'punk' was a bloody insult label via UK establishment/gutter press, even the 'proper-musicians' in the Sex Pistols did not like the "insulting" label at first, but asshole sociopaths Johnny Rotten and Malcolm McLaren (their manager/puppeteer) loved it (McLaren would have loved it if the UK press had dubbed it 'Baby-rape music', merely for the narcissistic ego pop value (McLaren and Lydon were/are creeps, but got all the celebrity, fandom, foedom and 'glory' sponging off fellow band mates into the future etc). But we are stuck with the term 'punk' or proto-punk' just like we are stuck with 'black' and 'white' people even though I never met or saw a picture of a black or white person, let alone yellow or red, in my life. The Saints weren't the first 'punk band' to release a record but '(I'm) Stranded b/w No time' was the first single released in the UK to be [retroactively] labelled by UK-institutions and some UK-fans as 'punk music'. I remember seeing The Saints at the University of Queensland which I think was in 1974. It was the first time I had ever heard punk music and I have to confess at the time I didn't like them and went to the other hall to see Split Enz, although I soon changed my mind after hearing I'm Stranded on the radio and ended up buying their first album. Later I became a big Ed Kuepper fan and have a whole bunch of his solo albums. I also saw what I think was their last perfomance which was a one off reunion in Brisbane, I think that was about 2006 or 2007.

The 'forgotten' start of 'punk'. The two leads in the band where from emigrant families from Europe. Hence the title "Stranded". They used to practice 600m away from my high school. They were upset, and talented. That is 'punk'. Punk is having a 'voice' when no-one else is listening :-)
