Austin, Texas is one of the fastest growing areas in the country, and has been commonly referred to as the next Silicon Valley due to the numerous tech companies that are opening offices here. Because of this, more and more people are traveling to the area, and the existing airport, while nice, is too small and lacks a lot of international flights. An expansion of the airport, set to be completed sometime around 2030 will more than double the size of the existing airport and add multiple gates for wide body aircraft. This is Austin’s New $2 Billion Airport Expansion Project!

@jonesrmj
@jonesrmj 2 жыл бұрын
That’s what I herd but you are probably right. The tunnel option would be much cheaper. As an example, LAX originally had plans for a sky bridge between Bradley West and Midfield Sattelite Concourse but they went with the tunnel instead because it was a lot cheaper.

I like your videos! This is the second one I've seen after MCO. We have family in Austin. The changes look nice but they are going to need a lot more than that the way that city is growing! Sounds like California is moving there, LOL. Have you done anything about CLT? I think when they are done, they will have either the 4th or 5th biggest potential for passenger traffic in the US. Back in the day, I drove around the ramps at both MCO and CLT in an investigative capacity, love being around planes. MCO is mammoth. Just subscribed.

They got approval for the airport expansion plans from the FAA last year, but the pandemic may have pushed back the start date due to airport revenues falling last year. Once the pandemic is over and as soon as the airlines can get planes back into the air out of Austin the passenger numbers will come roaring back. The airport prior to the pandemic had been growing by over a million passengers each year for the past 6 years until the pandemic hit. It won't take years to recover those passenger numbers, it will take only months. Take away the pandemic and the fundamentals of the market are the same. A growing regional population in the Austin metro area, the expansion and growth of local business, continued relocations of businesses to the area, a large population of young educated college students, a large population of active seniors, more tourism and pent up demand for travel, an increase in domestic and international flights, a huge airport service area stretching from Waco to San Antonio that is also growing like crazy in population. The demographics of people in this market (Austin) is a 4 that flies a lot. I predict the main problem will be over crowding until the airport can be expanded.

For anyone not from Texas, Austin wasn't designed to be the ever-growing city it's becoming. The airport is similar to that of airports like Dallas Love, or LaGuardia. Its good that this project is going on. Austin could really use its own grand international airport.

One issue is Austin is not a hub airport like Houston (United), or Dallas (American). Yes, Southwest does have a nice presence there. But it is still a growing area and will attract more non-stops to other cities outside of Texas. I like their future for sure.
@jonesrmj
@jonesrmj 3 жыл бұрын
That is true. Delta did make it a focus city though. But right now, the airport is too small for a major airline to start a hub here.
@richardcogbill6791
@richardcogbill6791 3 жыл бұрын
Austin airport does not want to be a hub airport because it would become reliant on the plans and logistics of one or two major carriers. When a major carrier goes through major changes in the industry and decides to end a hub and put it in another city, it leaves a huge hole with no air service for the population of that city. That city also takes an economic hit with their businesses losing connections to other cities. Look what happened to Cincinnati airport and Memphis airports when several carriers left to move their hubs to Atlanta. Austin prefers not to be dominated as hub airport. It has all the demographics for a continuing robust passenger market without becoming a hub.

The airlines will recover and grow where they can make the most profit and Austin is one of those markets. Since April of 2021, the passenger numbers have come roaring back in Austin to nearly pre-pandemic levels and the airlines are adding both flights and new routes in Austin to meet the demand. Hawaiian Airlines just started service between Austin and Honolulu this past spring and I can wait to use it on my next trip to the islands in 2022.

The flow is impeded by the design. Some of the gate areas are constricted as that it allows only one aircraft movement at a time. Look at the bottom of the design, the gates closest to the terminal building and roadway. The plane has to be tugged out and nearly tugged out to the far apron in order to depart. The overhead walkway to the other concourse isn't a good design. Does it allow for two aircraft, going in opposite directions, to pass underneath? It's going to be close to 100 feet up in the air. The walkway should be underground.
@jonesrmj
@jonesrmj 3 жыл бұрын
Those are some good points. These are just renderings though so maybe that will be factored in for the actual design.

Terrible, I take it you've never been to an airport like Newark, NJ. Only United's terminal (Terminal C) is decent, the others are relics built in the 1970s with little food and beverage post security. My brother lives in the suburbs and while its probably getting a bit crowded recently, I'm moving down in the fall and while I'm going to miss all the nonstop flights, its also going to be nice to have a modern terminal to fly out of.

The current airport is only 20 years old. It was built from the ground up on the former Bergstrom AFB site. But a lot has changed since what was then a brand new airport in 1999 serving a little over 6 million passengers. 9/11 and security design changed everything. Larger planes and gates to accommodate them, and more passengers. Nearly 18 million more passengers before the pandemic. Austin's population, business and tourist growth has been huge. The growth of airlines serving the airport and increase flight destinations has been big also. They need to get this expansion right away. I predict without a doubt serious overcrowding at this airport in the near future.
