The footage for this film was recorded in Sep-Oct 2014, and this edit-version is from May 2018.
The 8750 km and other distances reported were my estimates based on Google Maps information. The real length of the journey was 9766 kilometres however, with an average of 250 km per day.
So apparently there was 1016 km more local driving than already taken into account in the estimate.
The total length in time was 39 days, from 20th of September until 28th of October 2014.

Thanks so much for this - it was a real trip down memory lane for me! Back in about 1968 I worked at Docker River for my university holidays while I was a geology student. At the end of the program, another guy and I had to deliver one of our Land Rovers to the Pilbara, so we went via the Gunbarrel Highway to Kalgoorlie and Perth, then up the west coast. I had to smile at the point where you said you only saw 23 cars in the remote section - we saw precisely zero vehicles (except lots of wrecks!) between Docker River and Laverton. Can't imagine what would have happened if we'd broken down or got lost, but it would not have been pretty. I would love to do the trip again before I pop my clogs. Great country and never boring.

Thanks for the interesting video. I am familiar with the back country. I have worked at Giles weather station twice, six months in 1981 and another six months in 1986. I really enjoyed my times out there. I have long since retired and live in Canberra.

Mate you will absolutely love it. If you do some top places to stop. Fremantle - Round house and Fremantle Prisons. That will give you and insight on to what the penal colony was like. Road to Kalgoorlie. Yellowgine cemetary - A real intro to the brutality of their early pioneers hardships and perils. Coolgardie - Check out the museum lots of info on the early gold Rush. Whilst your there almost directly opposite is Vern's rock shop ( if it's still there ) Vern's a local prospector and has lots of great gold related stuff, and pick up a gold pan whilst your there because you will want to try your luck. Kalgoorlie/Boulder. Take time to look at the architecture in Kal and the short drive to Boulder ( 8km) and get real taste of a desert township frozen in time. The local Aborigines are the Wongi, a lot of them only speak broken English. Broad arrow pub. Two up school. Tour mines are excellent. The Super pit, a massive open cut gold mine. Drive out to Kambalda to Red Hill overlooking Lake Lefroy towards Norseman. A real sense of the outbacks vastness. A moment to reflect on Paddy Hannon's treck to find gold. If your in to road touring head to Norseman and fuel up then head to Esperance some 250 km South. Or if you want to see the cliffs of the Great Australian Night head towards Cocklebiddy ( only about 350 km ), check the local maps for sight seeing points. Back to Esperance. That's the town of islands on the Southern ocean. Head West along the coast to Augusta from there up the coast to Yallingup stopping at Margaret's River. After Yallingup the short 10 km drive to Dunsborough. This region is Geography bay. In summer the bay is like silk and the reflection of the night sky is really something. The bays between Dunsborough and the cape are simply stunning. Lots of wildlife on the roads particularly sun rise and sun set so drive carefully. Just Do It ! The west is more culturally Irish than you would think. You will be right at home.

Yes Jesper, you heard that very well.

That was enjoyable. Little trick for getting the wildlife to come to you. Sit quietly for 20 minutes. If in the more arid regions a pan of water under a shady tree no less than 50 meters away. You wouldn't have realised how teaming with life the desert is.

I think Australia is alot bigger than Google says it is and I think it is upside-down and not down under and heat rises ,so if you are upside-down heat rises to the ground ,there's no other reason for Australia to be so hot

Hi, how do you get the permit to travel from uluru to WA border ? Actually we want to travel from Esperance but we don't know if we should drive from Esperance to Uluru through the coast road or through WA and ACT. What would you suggest ?
@adjofilm
@adjofilm 4 жыл бұрын
Apoligies for not replying earlier: I was a month in Oman and returned this morning to the Netherlands. The Southern coastal road is a lot easier, mostly tarmac. And in Esperance you're already rather far to the east to start with. For the interior you need a 4WD because there are sandy parts between Leonora and Uluru. And that part takes approx. 3 days. But there are a few road houses spread over the desert. Prepair properly. I don't know about the permits because our brother (in law) who lives in Perth arranged it for us. He was also in this film and it's his car. It's up to you to decide. For the requirements and the permits may be see the internet. Obviously also airco in the car is required as it may become 40 degrees C. And take sufficient water and spare fuel and communication facilities with you, etc.
