Australia's First Undersea Telecommunications Cable was from Darwin to Java in the Dutch East Indies (now Indonesia). The cable was laid in 1871 by electricians from the Telegraph Construction and Maintenance Company, and the British-Australian Telegraph Company.

Just curious, to what country Australia was connected with this cable and who has payed for this ? China !?

The link was to Java, Dutch East Indies (now Indonesia). The cable was laid by electricians from the Telegraph Construction and Maintenance Company, and the British-Australian Telegraph Company.

Hello, Iain, Thank you for your reply and GREAT THANKS for your videos. Even it was happend, it was much more later. When any technology appears, first products costs very much and they used where it can be profitable. I can't figure out what kind of buiseness may afford to use this line in 1871. Furthermore, it is impossible for telegraph signal to propagate for about 1800 km. Amplifiers definitely were not invented at this time. Haven't you heard the story about Aru island ? If talanted engineer visit two of them, he almost definitely invent new AGC algorythm. In russian language "ARU" means Automatic Amplification Regulation (usually named Automatic Gain Control in english :-) Best regards, Igor.@@iain_explains
