Its so refreshing hearing a neutral/someone new to the game. Everything was spot on. Fiji should have won the first game and they have had bad calls against them. The bias happens with a lot of tier 2 or lower teams. If you watch two lower tier teams play you will notice the ref lets a lot more things slide. And yes Australia has been struggling but the squad selection was bad. Apparently its to build for the future

The bias against nations like Fiji comes from how much investment they are seen as in the eyes of World Rugby. The likes of Australia are always seen as a bigger nation and therefore a bigger team than Fiji, so WR will always try to assist them over a team like the Fijians, hence they are considered Tier 1 with Fiji Tier 2, in terms of funding. In these current times, WR has now been forced to change that as Fiji have grown enormously as a team, ever since the rules changed which allowed former NZ or Australian players who are Fiji born to play for Fiji.

Aswell there is definitely bias against Pacific island teams, they are underfunded, and despite being full of amazing players they never get the chance to play tests against good teams. Samoa's game against Ireland a week before the world cup was the first game Samoa played against a tier 1 nation in the FOUR YEARS since the last world cup, and they came close to beating Ireland. Pacific island nations give so much to rugby, and world rugby and other teams treat them very badly. Bar Tonga they are all smashing this world cup, I hope to God they start getting more games against tier one teams in the coming years. It's also rediculous how media treat the teams not even showing the team before the game.

Yes there’s a bias when it comes to pacific island nations especially against Fiji. The wales match was a perfect of example of this. Also in union international teams barely vs each other compared to 7s. Fiji only played Australia 23 times since their last win 69 years ago whereas in 7s international teams can play against the same team 20 times or more in a single 7s series which spans only 6 or so months.

You're turning into a Fijian elder at this point ha ha ha ha. But as some have pointed out, the bias (unlike some in past may have considered racial) is simply a matter of money. It is after all an entertainment business first, regardless of its extremely beneficial cultural effect. And as a business, who sells the most merch has the most votes. Its not intentional, there are exceptions to the rule, (Fiji actually being one of them) but unless purely subsidized, we have to work with group psychology. Fiji couldn't 'afford' to win huge games. 50 years ago we could afford because the distance between funding wasn't so high. One thing to certainly conspiracy upon is the changing of the rules to fit the large countries 'player rights'. Rules have changed to disfavour islander's pure brute physical playing styles. However, in most sports and business, complicated rules always come into use over time as the game evolves with the crowd and needed extra vetting for professionalism. (We can't have everyone just running straight at each other - it gets boring). Either way, islanders have had to lack behind in how the game evolves because its evolving 'against them'. Not that they don't have the correctly formatted or formattable players, but that the game is formatted to Tier 1 players. So the evolution of the sport works differently against each team. That is an actual fact. You can see this when they banned dunking in the NBA. However, as more islanders play overseas, they are being formatted with the game, so they evolve with it more, then they still have that physicality, (SA and NZ also posses this mentality I believe). But islanders are finally being able to afford the game, they are overflowing with talent (clubs used to withhold players before). Today that is not always the case. The crazy part here is when Samoa and Tonga also reach this tipping point as Fiji seems to have come to. The entertainment business side will have to evolve somehow as well. There has always been a 'catch up' strategy for Fiji (and other tier 2). It looks like we're all playing the same game these days. Tier 1 will have to move the goal post elsewhere if they want to keep ahead.
