I've always wondered why Craig Foster apologises for saying that Schwarzers second penalty save was as big as we've ever seen in this country. I always imagine Robert Zabica sitting at home absolutely offended saying to his wife "my save against Vanuatu was pretty important as well"

Schwarzer was the real hero. I saw every match Australia played in 1974 and thought the Aussies would never get there again.

Schwartzer won the game for us. Credit to the aussie strikers that shot true, but the Uruguayan strikers were ALL on target and NONE hesitated. Any lesser keeper, we would've lost.

The 2nd save by Schwarzer is absolutely magic. Under huge pressure, his team having just lost their lead, he saves a well taken penalty by not only guessing well but reading the flight of the ball and adjusting. An amazing save. Legend.

I don't know if the Uruguayans fully appreciated how much this result meant to Australian football, despite the obvious delirious joy of the crowd. So much football heartache Australia endured for the previous 30 years, with stupid and convoluted pathways to the World Cup. What Uruguay experienced in 2005, Australia experienced in 4 previous campaigns, always having to travel to Timbuktu for sudden-death qualifiers, not having the luxury of long-term round robins to earn our place, until they allowed us to enter into the Asian group. This particular Socceroos side was good enough to deserve a World Cup place, as evidenced by their eventual performance in the competition.

Well done by Australia in this match. They also did a great job in the 2006 world cup.. they lost to Italy because of an an "invented" penalty in the last minute of the match. But anyway, they are in a hard situation for the next world cup.. same grup as spain and netherlands. good luck, they'll need it.

xXxDrummerStekoxXx Yes, the Socceroos won the 2015 AFC Asian Cup and went into the 2011 AFC Asian Cup Final before losing to Japan, but without the success Australia had in 2005, Australia wouldn't be talking about these successes.

I don't know what's in Sydney's Stadium Australia (aka Telstra Stadium/ANZ Stadium), but it seems to me that place is a good luck charm for the Socceroos. Australia clinched FIFA World Cup qualification in two of their last three tournaments (qualified for 2010 in Doha, Qatar).
