The snakes aren't even the half of it. You also have the salties (saltwater crocodiles), the redback spiders, the funnel web spiders, the stonefish, the box jellyfish, the Irukandji jellyfish, the blue ringed octopus, the cone shells, and the sharks. And that's not even getting started on the plants. But come and visit, mate! It's a great place. 🇦🇺

What’s funny is I used to live in Arizona for well more than 20 years, then I moved to Florida where I’ve been for about 12 years. Prior to both, I lived in Louisiana, and trust me, the crazy there can easily rival Florida and Arizona. The Florida and Arizona entries into this competition seemed kinda tame to me. Australia won this in a way that only Australia could. There’s no competing with that, although I’m sure that “Florida Man” will certainly try.

Years ago a friend of my brother was taking a trip to Africa. I told my brother when he comes home keep an eye on him to see if he starts only making left or right turns because it would mean he had a brain worm that causes Turning sickness. I don't know if it infects people but it is a thing for African plains herbivores like wildebeest and zebras. Maybe it's jumped to humans in Australia.
@AilsiePath112211 ай бұрын
Google... ew, its a thing... What kills brain worms? The infection is treated with albendazole or praziquantel (drugs used to treat parasitic worm infections, called antihelminthic drugs). However, if a person has many cysts, antihelminthic drugs may kill many organisms, causing the brain to swell significantly.

Snakes? How about the spiders? LOL I was born and raised in rural eastern Australia. Lots of spiders and snakes. Now I live in California and was so happy to catch a little garden snake for the young boy that lived next door so he could keep in his empty aquarium. He thought it was so cool that the old lady (55) was able to do that and didn’t yell and run away.

There’s a book of true medical stories written by an Infectious Disease doctor called “The Woman With the Worm in Her Head”. In her case, she was a school teacher who had stroke-like symptoms. She lived in the US but I think had traveled to either S. America or Mexico. Turned out that her symptoms were caused by a tape worm egg sack that somehow got in her brain. The story became the basis for an episode of the TV show “House”.

There are some nasty little buggers that can be found in still bodies of fresh water - amoebic meningitis is a typical example. Back in the good times, we as children, were taught to hold our noses clenched with our fingers if ever jumping into non chlorinated water (sea water was fine but you had other things to be concerned with in that environment).
