Just a true story, may give some good lessons for other hunters: I am from Perth (currently living overseas due to work requirements), been hunter with my father since I learnt to walk. I am well hunter-culture aware. I came across a good friend in Perth that happened to be a hunter too. He arranged a trip to Murchison in WA to have a few days hunting-camping adventure in one of his friend's cattle station. He brought a friend of his, which clearly had no gun handling experience let alone hunting ones. Anyway, we got to the station after some 600 kilometres of driving. The station owner and his family were very friendly and welcoming to all of us. They briefed us on what they expect from us regarding the care of the wildlife and their cattle while we are out there and having our time. I told them and my friend that I am only interested to get some ducks and possibly one or two feral goats, and I won't be shooting any other animals. The station owner seemed quite satisfied with my intentions and he and his wife strongly recommended to us not to shoot the swans that are residents of their nearby lake. All three of us acknowledged and sometimes later we were on our own, bagging some ducks. It was around 4 or 5pm. I got two ducks in my bag, with my Beretta 12g Silver Pigeon over and under. I was hearing some repeated shooting sounds from some distance away from where my friend and his rookie friend have positioned themselves earlier on. It was almost complete darkness but they kept shooting with .22 rifle. I was very surprised, walked to the car and waited for them to get back to the car. When they arrived I asked them, what was the story about all the shootings? My friend told me that his friend, the new guy, shot one of the swans in the lake, and they both kept shooting at the swan to finish him off. I told him that do you know what have you done? You must tell the landowner what had happened and get the matter sorted out and apologise for what had happened. He told me he will sort it out as the landowner son is his friend. I trusted him to do the right thing by letting them know what had happened at the lake. The morning after when I was in the washroom and just feathering-off the two ducks that I got the night before I noticed the landowner wife she approached me and with a very upset and disgusting face told me that I am a bloodthirsty Bucher. I was shocked by what I heard, I asked her why? she said because I killed her swan! I had to make a split-second decision; either to tell her the truth and face possible confrontation by my friend and the other guy while every party had access to guns on spot, or accept that I killed the swan, or just keep my mouth shut and taking in what she is saying to me and what her whole family thinking about me. I chose the last option, I didn't say a word. Yes, my mate sold me, and he told the landowner that I did kill their swan. I had to be very careful during those nasty 3 days at the camping site, not to get shot by any chance, and keeping low level until coming back home in Perth. Hunting trips with those people never happened again. I left Australia soon after due to work requirements. Kept my guns at the gun shop, I am hoping to get back to hunting soon after COVID settles and I could return home. I hope that I could find some good hunters to join up with them, those who respect the life of every living being, and most importantly they know what is mean by "Hunting Culture".
