The beauty of this film is the ‘The Beast’ simply seems huge and dangerous bc we see him through the eyes of the scared kids. Once they are no longer scared ‘The Beast’ is revealed to just be sweet little Hercules.

At 27:13 Babe Ruth says, “I don’t know why, but can I have this?” It’s a Hank Aaron card. Babe Ruth held the HOMERUN record in Major League Baseball until 1974 when Hank Aaron passed it. So it was a wink wink to the audience that Babe’s Angel knew the future. Also, another fun fact, it was a game against the Los Angeles Dodgers. Benny’s team at the end of the movie.

Merry quite possibly learned more about american pop culture and sports in this movie alone than any other movie she's ever watched. Baseball is considered americas past time sport because it was the first ever professional sports league. This movie defined a generation.

Smalls’ looong brim cap is for fishing, you’re more likely to need to block morning sun lower in the sky. It not only makes him look goofy but reinforces his complete disconnection from baseball in his upbringing and background. Like wearing an American football helmet on a hockey rink. And “L7” is slang for “square.”

This was filmed in my town. I walk my dogs past the spot they stood after they got tossed out of the pool. One girl I worked with was an extra (pool honey), and a regular at our store was the woman who pulled her kid (not her kid) back when they ran out of the pool. A Christmas Story is another great narrated movie. Another great baseball movie (that you don't need to know anything about baseball to appreciate) is A League of Their Own. Bull Durham is also really good.

George Herman "Babe " Ruth was one of the first baseball superstars. He held the home run record for a long time. He became legendary when in the World Series he actually called his shot. He pointed in the direction he was gonna hit out of the park and did just that.

James Earl Jones also voiced Mufasa in THE LION KING too. He won an Honorary Oscar in 2011. His dad (Robert Earl Jones) appeared in THE STING (1973) with Robert Redford and Paul Newman, which would make a fantastic reaction as well (this film is such a delight and really entertaining). THE STING won 7 Oscars including Best Picture as well.

Playing sandlot ball was always more fun than playing organized Little League games. In sandlot ball, it was generally understood that the pitcher would throw something that you can hit. More hits, more plays, more fun. Then you'd go to your Little League games, and the same friends you were having fun with were trying to strike you out. You'd be up there at bat, knowing damn well that your friends on the other team know that you're an easy out. Glad I gave up on sports. They were fun when they were about the fun. When it got serious and all about winning, it stopped being fun.

You keep calling them bullies but that's just how young boys are with each other, and the movie was made in the 90s, BASED on the 60s. If they didn't talk to smalls the way they did he wouldn't have gained the confidence he got.

They were with each other. It’s not as common now, from what I’ve seen. He didn’t get his confidence from their insults. They’re what brought him down. It was Benny’s patience and encouragement that brought him up.

@@SusanaCanales1 i didn't say insults I said "if they didn't talk to smalls the way they did.." it's all encompassing. It's a arc to it. All the child characters play a role in it. The negging, the guiding hand from Benny, and then the eventual acceptance of the friend group. It's the reason why he was able to go to his step dad as a man and face the music about the ball. He had been razed, teased, and then loved and helped by those same people, that he understood things a bit better. It's what family does and what boys and men do. It's called Male Camaraderie.

This is a total classic in the US, it was one of those movies that it was near impossible to have missed if you're a certain age. I remember walking to our local theater with my dad to see this when it came out. I actually live right new the baseball diamond where they played. This entire movie was filmed in Utah.

21:50 Babe Ruth was a baseball player from the early 1900's, he is the most famous athlete of all time. Even today someone can say "Lionel Messi is the Babe Ruth of soccer/football" or hell there was a time when people said "Michael Jordan is the Babe Ruth of basketball". Especially in american sports there is no one higher than Babe Ruth he's like a mythical legendary sports figure, he was the first ultra celebrity that literally couldn't walk down the street anywhere without huge crowds forming he was Elvis before Elvis, the Beatles before the Beatles that type of celebrity.

@@MusicBlik The Sandlot is in the Glendale neighborhood of Salt Lake City. Their houses are on the far east side of Salt Lake City. Vincent Drug is in Midvale and I think the pool is up in Layton or Ogden, can't remember.

Field of Dreams, Moneyball, Bull Durham, The Natural, that Air Bud sequel, etc. But... My friends & I were the same age as these kids when this movie came out, we played baseball *every chance we got,* so this is my personal favorite.

Yes a trip to my youth in the 70s playing ball with my best friend in the neighborhood and we are still best friends after 50 years.... My 3 daughters love this movie as they love baseball. It's great that even though baseball is not a sport you follow you enjoyed it 😊

Thats why I love Americans sports - they gave us multiple good movies. I don't know rules for Football or Baseball but movies are gold.

Just remember Mary, the bigger the dog the friendlier they are. Its the little yappy ankle biters you gotta watch out for!! This is a timeless classic for sure. Ive seen it 100 times and still watch it. We just watched it with the grand kids (8 and 10) and they loved it. Which is unusual for a movie with no green screen cgi everywhere you look. Now my 8 yr old granddaughter is going around telling everyone 'youre killing me Smalls!'. LOL

You could see that Squints was sorry after he kisses Wendy, and he was crying because of guilt. The fact that he ends up marrying her and having 9 kids is insane 😂😂

I've loved this film since the very first time I saw it. I would elevate it above Stand By Me (1986) as far as the narrative goes, just because The Sandlot (1993) is more uplifting in its tone while Stand My Me is far more somber and introspective. Both are magnificent coming of age stories, but completely different shades of nostalgic emotions.

Fun Fact: This film was not shot in Southern California. It was filmed in Northern Utah, in a section of Salt Lake City called Sugarhouse, & the city is right next to a mountain range called the Wasatch Front.

Fun one, Mary! Thanks for sharing it. 🙂 Another fun/silly baseball movie with kids in it that you might like is The Bad News Bears from 1976. The humor is a lot more "salty" than Sandlot, but if you can resist getting triggered by it, it is a lot of fun too.

I've been watching this movie since I was about 7 years old. It's a coming of age film that really gives you a perspective on a young boy's life. I went through a similar situation as Smalls' when my parents divorced at an early age. This movie brings me back to the time when I was young and had friends just like these kids. We'd all ride our bikes to the baseball field before school and just play a couple of innings until we had to cut out to get to class. Man those days were just the greatest.

This is my favorite movie of all time. This movie was basically my life growing up as a child. So many good memories. Nobody called anyone by their own names. My nickname was “Laggs”. My baseball nickname was “Julio”. Before I went on the field I would sing “To all the girls I loved before” to keep loose, hence the nickname Julio.

Same, I did both slow and fast pitch softball and I truly don't understand how someone can't catch/throw a ball. I can see if aim/technique is terrible but, it's honestly a talent to throw with all your might and the ball only go a foot in front of you. 🤣🤣🤣🤣

I don't watch The Sandlot often, but I love this movie. I'm a sucker for a few things, time period movies and sports are a couple of them. This is a great mix of the two. It also has one of my favorite quotes of all-time in it: "Heroes get remembered, but legends never die. Follow your heart kid and you'll never go wrong."
