Looking for an Australian SIM card when exploring Australia? Then you may be wondering which one will be the best for you. Telstra? Optus? Vodafone? Do these names not ring a bell? Worry not. In this video, we will find out which Australian SIM card is the best.
Australia has 3 main operators: Telstra, Optus, and Vodafone Australia. There are plenty of MVNOs out there, around 50, and around 20 of them offer prepaid services.
As these MVNOs use the networks of the main operators, it is important to know which network you can rely on. Even then, you may not be interested in going with an MVNO and just want to go with the big 3.

All depends where you live. I live at Mt Cotton in Qld & Telstra & Optus cannot provide me a service but Vodafone can. Australia is a huge place & choice of carriers very much depends on location, so does support. Bear in mind Telstra is by far the most expensive as well & not always the best. Trouble is foreigners think Melbourne & Sydney are the only cities in Aus lol

Hey there - I actually never did any research into them. I thought they were a postpaid only MVNO. From a quick glance, they look fine with competitive plans. They are on the Telstra wholesale network, meaning that speeds are capped at 100 Mbps and the coverage will be worse compared to the retail network (only Telstra itself and Boost Mobile, as the only Telstra MVNO)). They look like an interesting operator. I have the feeling they are like Dodo. A broadband operator who later decided to enter the mobile market. Main difference between the two is that Mate is on Telstra (better) and Dodo is on Optus. I'll probably make a video about them soon because nobody else has done that so far 😂 Thanks for watching the video and leaving this comment - introducing me to an MVNO I was not aware of!

I switched from Telstra to Optus , the Telstra gave me a stronger signal but not so much data so I'm now with Optus, for me it was a case of six of one and half dozen of the other.
@PhoneTravelWiz
@PhoneTravelWiz 2 жыл бұрын
Optus is indeed very generous with their allowances! Yes, their coverage is worse than Telstra's, especially in the Outback. But in urban areas, Optus is fine! You should also consider Gomo. Also by Optus, but cheaper and SIM only 😎

Telstra if you want best coverage. Optus is nearly as good but not quite. Telstra superior in major capital cities. Optus better speed in rural from what I've read. Still I think for most people Either Telstra or Optus fine for most unless your are going into extremely remote areas. Extreme remote then Telstra. Vodaphone is improving still not as good as Optus or Telstra.

Hey! Thanks for your comment! I actually didn't know what optus was better in rural Australia - I expected Telstra to excel in every category 🤔 Vodafone (Vodafail) has indeed improved a lot, but they have a long way to go 👀 Thank you for watching my video!

@@PhoneTravelWiz Well apparently Optus spent billions on CAPEX with their 4G rollout. So much so that they actually had more 4G towers than Telstra a few years back. No doubt Telstra raced to catch up again. Telstras biggest strength was their 3G network in some of the remotest parts of Australia like upper Western Australia, through and up the center of Australia and also deep into the interior of Queeensland, NSW, and WA. Because both telcos are constantly erecting towers its very difficult to access which is the better. No doubt Optus is much better than they were 7 years ago when clearly Telstra was superior. Thats not the case today. They are still not on a par with Telstra but for most people in rural areas they're maybe better to go with Optus because Optus us much less utilised than Telstra. More people means more load on the network which means you could have trouble getting signal. What most fail to realise is in some situations Optus is actually better. Last year I did a speed test with a friend unsurprisingly Optus was faster than Telstra by a considerable margin. Even he was surprised by the results. Telstra has had at least 10 outages last year. Whereas Optus its rare. I was with Telstra for years until I had an argument which made me jump ship. I've had plans with Optus that actually gave me too much value. 😂 So for now I'll stay with Optus who are much better where I live. I guess it really depends on where you live. If you are not covered by Optus you have no choice. You must go with Telstra. The same is also true of Telstra. If you cant get coverage with Telstra where you live you either get a dual sim or move to Optus. It really depends on your job, main area, and how much outback travel you do. Very rarely do I get a situation where I cannot get signal on Optus. If I lived in a city I might go with Telstra still out of the cities Optus is more than fine for my needs.

@PhoneTravelWiz 2 жыл бұрын
Hey - Lycamobile AU is alright. Access to the Telstra wholesale network (so not the full one like Telstra itself and Boost AU), but your speeds will be capped at 100 Mbps. Some Telstra MVNOs, like ALDI and Boost, have 5G NR access already (as a "trial" until September). I am not sure if Lycamobile does so too.

@@workonline9497 Depends on how remote. I was in Shepparton Victoria two weekends ago. I was mostly on 3G or slow 4G with ALDImobile and Boost (although the latter had slow 5G NR at times). And that is still a "city" in regional Victoria. Imagine going to remote town with Lycamobile - will not be fun. Telstra performed much better. Optus was not too bad either!
