Union membership has “collapsed” in Australia as the old industrial base has been taken out but a new business model has been created in its absence, says Institute of Public Affairs Executive Director Scott Hargreaves.
“As union membership has collapsed in this country … they’ve created a new business model essentially,” Mr Hargreaves told Sky News host Peta Credlin.
"Which involves the rivers of gold flowing from the worker’s pay packets being siphoned off into programs like this for the benefit of the unions.
“I think Australians and regulators need to understand that this really is the modern face of unionism and it’s got nothing to do with protecting workers' interests.”

The unions own the super funds. The Labour Party has been growing a voting block of public servants, welfare recipients and union members who will always support them.

No surprise considering how they treat their members with contempt and many times they are even worse than so many employers in multi million dollar companies.

Where did the conditions for your job come from? Did you personally negotiate every single one coming up with them yourself with your employer? You came up with how much annual leave you get, how much sick leave, workplace health and safety conditions all on your own,? You dumb m'fer you know where they came from. Unions.

The same thing has happened in the USA where unions have simply become a fund-raising arm of the Democratic Party.

While I appreciate what Unions did for the working person in Australia, they lost their way IMO. They only have power when there is conflict so they have a vested interest in creating conflict, that works against them.

Unions didn't stand up for workers during COVID.

I found the SDA pretty supportive when it came to educating staff and trying to improve safety in my warehouse when management chose to turn a blind eye to safety issues consistently raised by forklift drivers. I ended up just leaving the company for better conditions and now they can’t hire 😂

Trade Unions have always been a bad thing. Take a look at the British motor trade in the 1970's and the miner's strike of the 1980's

Debs husband says it looks like labor unions have just become another business where its more about the money than it is about the members.

Yes, Howard's govt consistently legislated against unionism. The consequence of this is real wages for people earning less than $100,000 a year have gone backwards for the last 15 years while company profits have skyrocketed. No need to take my word for it you can look it up. Now I agree 100% there were some very corrupt unions. However, address that. I'm sure everyone will agree there are some very corrupt companies exploiting their staff. That doesn't mean we get rid of all companies, does it?

Talk about an enviable business model Scott. Charity-like tax exempt status with unclear revenue raising accountability. 🤨🤔

Most of Australia's manufacturing are no longer joining Unions. If they dont jion up We'll lose our automotive industry and white goods manufacturing. Unions protect these industries and there are very few from these industries jioning up. Disgraceful
