I visit the Labaun War Memorial and Surrender Point with local expat Australian Peter Searle.
Peter discusses the Sandakan Death March, the greatest single atrocity committed against Australians in war. It is believed that almost
3,600 Indonesians, 1,787 Australians, and 641 British prisoners died at, or between, Sandakan and Ranau.
At Surrender Point on Labuan, the 32nd Japanese Southern Army surrendered to the 9th Division Australian Imperial Forces on 9th September 1945 which led to the end of World War II in Borneo.
The Australian 9th Division, Rats of Tobruk, were heavily involved in reconstructing British North Borneo and rebuilt and re-established a considerable amount of civil infrastructure. The division developed a warm relationship with the local people and its efforts were recognised by the incorporation of the division's colour patch in the coat of arms of the new Colony of British Borneo. These arms were used until British Borneo became the Malaysian state of Sabah in 1963.
A big thank you to Historian, Lynette Silver for clarifying some historical points via email. For more information on any of the above history visit:

My uncle is buried in the Labuan Island war cemetery.He was killed in action on the 12th of June,1945 near what is now the Brunei airport,which in 1945 was a Japanese held airfield near a swamp & rubber plantation called Razorback Ridge by the Australians.My uncle died taking that patch of dirt that doesn't exist anymore due to development.His name was Reuben John (Jack) Taylor 2/17th AIF. Thank-you for posting this video and reminding us all of the price paid for the freedom we have. Cheers

My father was in the 2/12th Field Artillery unit in 24th Brigade of the 9th division as a gunner on 25 pounders and on 2 May 1945 the unit embarked from Brisbane for Morotai. In June they were part of the amphibious landing on Labuan Island. Apparently Japanese resistance was very stiff in an area known as “The Pocket” and between the 15 and 20th June the 2/12th fired over 140 tons of shells into “The Pocket” killing an estimated 120 enemy soldiers. Dad there were many Australian casualties there so he was happy being a gunner... As is fairly usual for veterans Dad didn’t talk much about his wartime experiences but it is pretty clear that it had a significant impact on his life. He recalled being at the Labuan airfield the day Auster airplanes bought in the Sandakan survivors. He also recalled guarding Kempei Tai members after VJ Day and being horrified by the crimes they were being accused of, as that was the first time ordinary soldiers found out about the butchery of POWs and local civilians. He said over 100 POW’S were convicted during the Labuan war crimes trials, he didn’t say how many were executed. But all in all he said he was spared the worst of the war and while it had a deep effect on him I don’t believe he suffered any significant ongoing trauma. He said the worst thing was the gunfire made him “a bit deaf”....... He retained a newspaper clipping of Macarthur stepping ashore at Labuan and circled a dot way up on a landing craft which he was certain was him. Incidentally he pronounced it "Lab-you-ann" not "Larb-uen". I assume that was how Australians pronounced it back then.

MY mother was at the POW camp at Sandakan... bartered with the POW the tapioca and banana with army issues. The boiler furnaces were fed by my uncle...more local stories... I have the pelt hat and few artifacts...but now no more in my custody.....my dad was one who exhumed the burial of POW then transferred to Labuan.. more local stories about the POW. I had seen the train near the airport by the bomb crater and one zero plane...50 caliber cartridges from P 39 and there were 41 300 pounder bombs still alive back 1974... lot more to tell but less to remember that the POW using locomotive to cart the pebble from Sibuga river...

No one will forget about what Japanese did before. Cruel and inhumane. Many sabahans were being stepped on until died during the dark era. Japan also try to hide the history about the Nanking massacre. It's all karma they said about the natural disasters nowadays

My friend's grandfather was seeing his own brother died in front of him because he was accused of not being respectful to a Japanese soldier in Borneo. Being stepped on until he was breathless and eventually died. No one would ever forget about what they did in the past, that's why history should be always told to the younger generation. Asians always say it's karma about the natural disasters in Japan.

There is not much interest or knowledge of the Australian WW2 campaigns after PNG. It seems as soon as Australia felt safe a portion of the population and some of the pollies were happy for the Yanks to carry on and for Australia to do the minimum in blood and treasure. (Mind you, MacArthur was happy to sideline the Australians and avoid sharing any glory.) This flowed over into a number of controversies at the time and continued after the peace. As it is there is much in the Malayan campaign, the captivity and the liberation of the now Indonesian territory that is worthy of study and being honoured. It seems by that mealymouthed inscription on the peace memorial that that Japanese want to minimize the whole SE Asian campaign and their dishonorable role in it. I don't mind them linking the honour of their common soldier to our soldiers but they need to delink the entire Japanese WW2 leadership from sharing any honour, be that moral or military leadership.

Well the other interpretation is that Australia was given the task of liberating South East Asia after New Guinea, which they did. Also keep in mind that MacArthur gave Australia command of the British in the occupation of Japan and the Korean War, he knew where reliability and competence lay.

The cemetery should be at Sandakan instead. My father was one who painted the crosses and after the war he was also helped to dig the remains wrapped in wool like blanket s. My mother was also bartered food with army issues like pelt hat, fork spoon also uniform that could be from the dead soldiers. Lot of local stories unwritten that I knew from my mother. Even the two boliers to fire the furnace was my uncle.. my grandfather was one who operate the locomotive from the airstrip to nearby white pebble using tippers. Iv seen the remain of locomotive and bucket s tipper..

the massacre of american p.o.w.s on palawan by imperial japanese forces is a similar, though smaller, late war atrocity. i sometimes wonder if macarthur was too soft on the emperor in 1945...
@vjieking5405
@vjieking5405 3 ай бұрын
Yes and No. US nuked Hiroshima and Nagasaki to impress the Russians. The emperor was not hanged because US needed Japan to contain Russia. US might have exacted revenge for Pearl Harbour, but let Japan off for its heinous crimes against humanity in Asia and in particular in China. And in return US obtained from Japan all the human live experiment data and biological weapons conducted at Pinfan, China, and promptly used it during the Korean War to cause an bubonic plague outbreak.. For not having to pay reparations, US manage to ensure that Japan is perpetually beholden to America.

The Japanese State has never accepted accountability in the way the Bundesrepublik had done. Whatever the true regard of a diminishing number of Japanese who experienced the war the generation which followed partially regards Japan as victims of the Americans on account of the nuclear bombs.
