Austria's Greatest Hike: 7 Peaks in a Day on Klettersteig Innsbruck

There's a good reason the Innsbruck Nordkette Klettersteig is known as the greatest hike in Austria. The via ferrata route takes daring hikers to 7 alpine peaks in a single day by traversing across one epic and often terrifying ridge line. The views along the Nordkette mountain range (otherwise known as the "Jewel of the Alps") are insane, the drop-offs are STEEP, and the hiking experience is one of a kind.
DISCLAIMER: This is a challenging via ferrata route and should not be attempted without proper experience and equipment. As always, hike and climb at your own risk.

Thanks Todd! When we planned this honeymoon we really thought it would be fun and exciting, but whatever we imagined was nowhere close to how fantastic the actual reality was! That virtually never happens to us, because we tend to be very optimistic and expect the best, but we just had no idea how fantastic these European via ferrata could be. Health and early retirement willing, we're going to be spending a lot of time in the future exploring these European mountains! ❤️

Thanks Bob! Yes, as you can tell we have become huge converts to via ferrata style hiking on this trip. It allows for really challenging climbing and spectacular views with less risk to life than typical class 4 hikes. Of course it's still important to take great care because a fall even when clipped to the iron could be very injurious or worse, but it's wonderful to be able to explore such crazy steep terrain with a lower risk of fatality! ❤️

Haha I'm not gonna lie, Cynthia. I may have had a glass or two myself when we got back from this one. What scared me the most was going up that steep gravelly gully early on, and then going down that crazy ladder at the end. It was hard to tell on camera, but there was a section where you just had to sort of step off into space. Anyway, I'm glad that you had the same wine-recovery reaction I did! ❤️ --E

The perspective of the debt of field was awesome. You really captured the steepness and grandeur of those peaks. I am so glad you resisted the urge to trail run along those knife edge ridges, which just walking on them looked scary enough! Thanks very much, and you are totally right -- intellectually you know that these are pretty safe climbs to do since you're clipped into the cable, but emotionally it's very hard to overcome that fear of a 1000 foot drop right below you. The best way to learn it just through very gradual exposure training -- each time trying something a little higher or with a little bit more of a severe drop. It might take months or years, but eventually even drops like these will stop being as scary once you get used to it. ❤️

That's a great term for it -- extreme hiking! Love it. And honestly, we think you could do some of these via ferrata hikes. They are strenuous because of the extreme verticality, but they're also relatively safe because you can clip into the cable and also grip it when necessary. So it's kind of a best of both worlds situation that you might really love. Just be sure to start with one that's not too crazy first so you can get comfortable and make sure you like it! ❤️

Haha ya these via ferrata definitely are an interesting hybrid, Angela. We call it hiking because it's really just class 4 with a cable in the dicey parts for added safety (in other words, safer than some of the class 4 hikes we do in the states). There are definitely a few sections that would be class 5 (meaning climbs rather than hikes) without the cable, but since you have the cable to hold onto in those sections they're really still class 4 in practice. ❤️

Thanks Anna -- the lake district sounds lovely! Hope you had a nice time there. Yes we were definitely fortunate in the weather. One thing that helped was that we had so many weeks in Europe, so whenever it was raining for a few days in the Alps or Dolomites we would go visit Rome or Venice, and then come back to the mountains when we got another good weather window. Of course it's hard to do that if you only have a short vacation, so having a full six weeks made a big difference. Now we just have to find a way to get six weeks off again next summer! ❤️

@@6MTGirl Looking back on it, the diciest was almost certainly the Galena Peak to Little San Gorgonio traverse, just because the rocks were so loose and occasionally ripping right off! This was not in our beta, probably because we were the first ones to go after that giant forest fire up there. We're guessing the fact that so much of the undergrowth had burned made the rocks a lot looser, plus maybe the extreme heat also did something to the rocks themselves to make them more breakable. Also, the down climb was steep AF even though we didn't film much of it!

@@LiveHardxLoveHard I'd say that -- if you avoid the commuter trafic -- from any location in Innsbruck you can be in the (lower parts of the) mountains in about maybe 20, 30 minutes with either public transportation or car. Also the lower part of the mountain range were you did the Via Ferrata (down in the woods) is full of (all kinds of) trails for trail running or MTB, hiking, ski tour etc. So you can even get into natur every day after work, for instance. And on the weekend you can look for adventures in the larger region around Innsbruck. You can also run up or bike up to the (already quite high) middle station of the cable car which you luckily reached in time. And: although Innsbruck is located in the middle of this nature and you can reach the mountains that easily and fast you still have all the opportunities of a quite large city. If you still need it a little bit bigger than Munich (Germany) is the next option and you can reach the first mountains in about one hour of driving or such. 😊

Tony that is so fantastic! I will take a bet right now that this will be the funnest trip of your entire life -- Daubenhorn is epic, and Innsbruck is just incredible. Yes, the trail is easy to follow because it's mostly iron cables the whole way. There are a couple of places for bailout options and you hike up that field where we saw the sheep, but it's not too confusing there. We did use our GPS though just to be sure, and highly recommend that on every hike. Even with iron cables to follow most of the way, you just never know and it's good to have satellite nav backup. You do not go back along the cables. It's a path, steep in a couple of places but not too bad, that goes along well below the rocky ridge line. Once you get on it, it's fairly easy to follow back to the gondola. Can't wait to hear how much you love these hikes!! ❤️

Hi Elise and Adam, Yes I loved this video. And actually I love all your videos. You have knack for keeping us in suspense as well as camera skill in capturing scenic beauty. Question: How do the Dolomites and Austrian Alps compare to your favorite U.S. hikes in terms of scenic beauty, difficulty, and fun?
@LiveHardxLoveHard
@LiveHardxLoveHard Жыл бұрын
This is a great question, and one we talked about a lot about on these European adventures. In terms of scenic beauty, they are right at the top alongside the most beautiful U. S. hikes (a lot of which are in the Sierra). In terms of difficulty, they are technically a bit harder because the via ferrata allows you to do more technical and vertical terrain safely, but they also tend to be shorter so they are not quite as exhausting. As for fun, there is probably nothing more fun than a good via ferrata route. You are going up incredibly daunting vertical rock faces, but confident that even if you fall you will probably only drop about 5-10 feet as long as you are clipped in properly. There's nothing more fun than a death-defying climb where you are very unlikely to actually die! ❤️
@eugenpaval
@eugenpaval Жыл бұрын
@@LiveHardxLoveHard please do not fall in VF! The amount of injury is going to be overwhelming. Two reasons for that. The route is not vertical enough in most cases to keep you from tumbling on rocks and where it is the distance between anchors is too great to prevent you gaining speed, plus there will be rings or ladders to injure you even more. Second, even with a modern dynamic lanyard, there isn't enough gradual deceleration built into the system. The cable s there for offering comfort and aid more than protection.
