The movie producer probably had some Buddhist study classes in Boudhanath: “… In their analysis of consciousness into hierarchy of various classes the Abhidharma systematizations further bring out the way in which cosmology is essentially a reflection of psychology and vice versa. The basic structure of this hierarchy of consciousness parallels quite explicitly the basic structure of the cosmos.” „The mind creates our world. Everything we see and experience is but a display or expression of our mind. That the world is so tangible and firm is due to our habits of solidifying everything through fixation and clinging. The outer objects, however solid and real they may seem, possess no real matter. They are not made up of small indivisible particles, but are merely mind. Since they do not exist as outer matter, but are merely an expression of the mind, we must turn toward the mind itself and examine its true nature.“

Maybe they ran out of budget so they changed the ending and making it not make sense on purpose was the best way to cover that up. Think sci-fi version of Monty Python and the Holy Grail.

I was curious so I axed my phone that exact question. answer: between 5 and 20 minutes depending on alignment etc. shocked it could be as little as 5 minutes. I remember talking to my relatives in europe when I was a kid. there was a 1 second delay, I know that changes the nature of the conversation because you're expecting and immediate response but that 1 second was soooooooo effing annoying. Don't agree with the philosophy but still enjoyed the story. Plus of course, it would be very difficult to claim something didn't happen when hundreds of thousands of people worked on the project for years and undoubtedly lots of very smart and well-funded people probably tarcked it. Oh, yeah, and the ones who returned to Earth and the many people involved in getting them back. Still, an interesting show.
