We uploaded our 1st version of the Katniss Braid several months before the movie came out. Right after the movie premier, Linda Flowers, the lead hairstylist on The Hunger Games movie set, personally reached out to CuteGirlsHairstyles when she saw how popular our tutorial was! Can you believe it... she reached out to US!!!
Linda was so amazed at how iconic the Katniss Braid became, so much that teen girls were wearing the braid to see the movie in theaters! She recognized that CuteGirlsHairstyles helped in teaching thousands of our fans how to do the braid! As such, Linda offered to give me a "personal" tutorial of the many Hunger Games hairstyles over Skype!

During our tutorial, I quickly saw that Katniss' style had a little more to it than what I had originally thought! Linda showed me how she added the texture into Jennifer Lawrence's hair "before" she created the Katniss braid {something I had not figured out}. She uses a tool called the TopStyler® {by InStyler®} to add volume and stranded twists into the diagonal Dutch braid. I show you how to do this in the tutorial.

I appreciate that the TopStyler uses a slow and uniform transfer heat to curl the hair, rather than the immediate hot heat a curling wand provides that only heats the outside of the strand.

Great braid. I love the hunger games series so much. For anyone who keeps wondering, Jennifer Lawrence's braid was her own hair in the hunger games and catching fire but due to her pixie cut she had to wear a wig in the mockingjay movies. Thanks so much for all your cute hairstyles Mindy!

Wow! Your tutorial was awesome! Thank you for helping me make my daughter happy with an authentic looking braid. I don't have a top styler so I sectioned off the top, sprayed it damp, and twisted it into little buns to dry overnight. The effect was almost identical. Thank you so much!

Yummy Cupcakes it might be easier to do if you do a french braid on someone else, then strait down the back of your head (not from side to side like in this video), then just keep practicing until you've mastered the Authentic Katniss braid!

Excellent tutorial. Instead of using the TopStyler, I braided the top layer of my hair while it was still slightly wet and let it dry. Gave it a nice wave.

And I love this hair style since my hair is actually really curly I find that this braid is best done on "next day curls" (styled with moose in the morning and slept on) and I just grab from a spot I like and just braid! And this is totally awesome that its a Dutch braid because I taught myself how to braid by watching but I braid backwards so when I thought I was teaching myself how to French braid, I was really Dutch braiding! So this really just comes naturally to me!

She is not LITERALLY fighting to death. What you see on tv is not usually true. They are actors in a studio with green screens, and so the same way a football player would play in an arena, she is playing pretend while being filmed in an "arena". Playing isn't just reserved as a term for children, it is used to describe playing sports, playing instruments, etc.

U did a gr8 job recreating Linda Flower's Katniss braid. She's awesome to be featured in this video. Thanx for not only this tutorial, but also give Linda's explanation on the rationale for Y she braided the hair on the nape of her neck. What a cute model. After U finished her hair, this girl looks like she can kick ass in the arena.

People always always have to wear make up when on camera, regardless of age, even males have to. On camera your skin looks pasty and pale without makeup because of the lighting levels. Same for the stage - you wouldn't believe what heavy makeup we must wear because of all the stage lights, and to you in the audience it probably looks like normal makeup, but trust me, it's really thick and heavy!! Have you ever seen in the magazines those stories about "celebrities without makeup" and they take photos, and the celebs don't look as good? Well, that's because they weren't wearing makeup ad they need to for the camera. If you saw them in person without the makeup, they would look good, just like any ordinary woman who doesn't wear makeup who is walking down the street. Mindy's daughter is quite lovely, she's very lucky because she's naturally gorgeous already, and then her talented mother does all these amazing hairstyles... I hope she wears them to school or out. She must be the envy of every girl in her school, and they must all want to come over so Mindy can do their hair!! :p

dmf1301 I do know that performers have to wear makeup on stage but putting on makeup for a camera? Also, the celebrities look bad in the pictures because makeup can and will destroy your face if you wear It everyday and don't take it off when you're going to bed or don't take care of your skin when it's off. I'm not trying to be rude but I don't believe that celebrities look bad in those pictures just because they're not wearing specific makeup for the camera and I doubt they'd look any better in person. However, most of those pictures are taken a blur or from a bad side shot, in that case maybe it's the photographers fault.

Alice In Wonderland I don't intend to be rude, either, but your information is definitely wrong. I've studied acting, both for film and for the stage at a professional acting school. Believe me, on certain cameras you definitely need makeup. And you're right that if you don't look after your skin then it goes bad from using the makeup, but I'd say there's a good chance that most celebrities KNOW that, and DO look after their skin. Just like ordinary women who wear makeup every day... my mother is in her 60s and has the skin of a woman in her 20s, because she wears makeup every day and has done for years, but she also has taken good care of her skin every day for the same amount of years. She does not have one single wrinkle, she looks fantastic!! Same with those 50+ celebrities who've had a long career, worn makeup every day and looked after their skin every day as well. Anyways, regardless of our different opinions about wearing makeup on camera or not, Mindy's daughter is still allowed to wear some makeup if she wants to, and doesn't deserve to be criticized.

I watched the hunger games for the first time tonight. I was a bit hesitant to watch it, but I was pleasantly surprised. During the reaping scene where Katniss's mother pulled her hair back, I thought of your channel.
