Writer and counter-cultural connoisseur Joe Banks joins us to talk about Hawkwind: Days Of The Underground, his sparkling account of the rise and 51 year trajectory of the unsung revolutionary heroes. All the following are entertainingly included - their 'creation myth' in the white heat of Ladbroke Grove and days as the house band of Radical Politics, the sci-fi adventure with Michael Moorcock and Robert Calvert, the Silver Machine saga, the pioneering rock theatre of Space Ritual, their roles in punk and Krautrock and the saucer-eyed cast members who've kept them "the alternative to the alternative". I used to plug my bass into my folks Grundig radiogram and also play in search of space album full blast lie underneath and freak out. They were the days

I agree with you guys. I'd love to think about the Hawkwind starship having a generations long voyage. You can easily imagine fans hundreds of years hence sagely pouring over new Hawkwind music and saying how great it is but how they still prefer the early stuff. 😊

Many say including myself say...Nik Turner RIP and co-founder was the Spirit of Hawkwind.. ....But Dave Brock is the Back Bone and of course The Captain

But for CV19, I would have been watching Dave Brock and Hawkwind at Beautiful Days this coming weekend (Aug. 2020). Fingers crossed they will come next year. BTW Gong is one and one is you.

A very big subject (Hawkwind) for such a shgort interview. Only a fleeting mention of Hawklords who still play but without Brock. No mention of Lemmy or Motorhead either.

Shame that there was no mention of the huge contribution made by Nik Turner to the Hawkwind story both in the early to mid 70's and early 80's even if Brock would like to erase that contribution. Hopefully he will be given more credit in the book!

That's such a coincidence that guy saying that he got a copy of Space Ritual from his local lending library. My partner also obtained that via his drunken wrong un of a father. Who nicked some albums and Space Ritual was one of them. From a local "lending" library . When his mum kicked his dad out he left the album behind. So he kind of inherited it. That's how he got into Hawkwind as a 14 year old.
