📺 I spoke to the lovely Tiffany McDaniel about her novel, 'Betty' for my first interview of the year. It’s so worth watching her speak about her struggle to get this book published, about how to balance the darkness in the story with light, and about the theme of nature and the influence of Cherokee culture. 🌳 Like what you see? WHAT IS IT ABOUT?
Betty is one of six children. She's born in a bathtub in 1954 to a white mother and Cherokee father. 🛁 All her siblings take after their light-skinned mother. But Betty is as dark as her father, who fondly calls her "Little Indian". 👩🏾 Her darker skin causes her a lot of pain as classmates call her ugly names and abuse her. 🤬
But Betty's father, Landon, is her refuge. He teaches her about nature 🍃 , about the night sky 🌌 , about her heritage 🪶 . He is full of magical tales, which fuel her own imagination. She begins to write her own stories. ✍️
