We bought our 2015 Land Rover Discovery 4 SDV6 with an oil leak and a transmission problem. The transmission issue was fixed in a previous episode and this time we go after the 8HP70 transmission oil leak. Who could have predicted that this turns out to be a debacle. Hope you enjoy the video.

More's the shame that Land Rover, after building vehicles for so many years can't build something that doesn't leak oil. But leak, that's what they do it's compulsory.

My guess is the bottom bolt penetrated into the transfer box casing so you took the bolt out and put some sealant on a shorter bolt. All caused by the bolts being a different length.

Some days you get the bear and some days the bear gets you!🙂 I greatly admire your skills here and that you have the humility to admit when you get stuff wrong. As someone not very mechanically inclined when young (or now), and motivated then by a low income not to get stuff done by garages, I had little choice but to do the simpler stuff myself. So many of my repairs on the wrecks I owned were done with an oily Haynes manual in one hand and a collection of things that might vaguely be described as tools in the other... Lots of swearing, skinned knuckles, ruined clothing and second or third attempts to get stuff working.

Excellent video as usual. Of course LR4 is my favourite topic along with LR Time. I found it easier to remove the exhaust and DPF complete rather than to try and disassembly those 3 rusty bolts on the rear DPF flange. Of course had to grind them off! Once the DPF is ready off, great idea to check the actual soot covering to see that your regen is really happening. Looking forward to the sequel today.

I have no idea what caused this oil leak, as I own a Toyota and do not have oil leak problems. The medical specialist say, “ if you use your brain to its maximum capabilities, it’s unlikely you will suffer with dementia”. I can positively say your going to be ok due to the usage of your brain. However as a Toyota owner I have no need to push my brain capabilities on Toyota repairs, I’m more likely to suffer with that brain memory disease, what ever it was called. Love you guys ❤.

Nice to see new videos from you guys ✌️. Please do not blame "Land Rover" for bad repairs. The guys from the dealers are unexperienced, they just don't think and it is not just the JLR dealers... For an 8HP70 oil leak concern from the back of the automatic transmission, the root cause of the leak, can also be a porosity issue with the case. I am happy to support ;)

I owned a D2. I was delighted at how comfortable and versatile it was. I always wished for a D3. After seeing you need a full workshop including hoist, custom manufactured tools, and seemingly limitless time to maintain these later models, maybe I better avoid. When I worked for the Royal Flying Doctor Service out in Central Australia I replaced the D2 with a Defender with the BMW designed TD5 because of the harsh conditions (no roads, severe dust). Despite all the local Toyota pundits braying like donkeys about my Defender it performed flawlessly and only needed oil/filter changes. I did however have to spend much time underneath initially filling all the holes in the body with silicon sealant. The body construction is very crude but very practical. If you actually need a 4WD the Defender has many attention to detail which make it a workhorse eg. metal guards over exposed fuel filter which D2 does not etc. I enjoy the good humored camaraderie between you two. Amazed at your patience. Thank you & greetings from Brisbane Australia 👍🏻 🦘

Regarding corroded bolts, I always give the heads on mine a light covering of a thick grease. As long as the bolts are not directly in the path of road water, it prevents the heads from corroding. Yes, the sensor was screwed up in the Ford assembly plant. Larry, who mounted this sensor had a bad day because Manchester United lost the day before. 💪💪But we did not use the Devcon, even though we bought it. You'll see in the next video what we did use. And we certainly used enough of it. 😀👍🙋‍♀Vera

Great video as always, I've just purchased a discovery 4 I think Christian would love to have a look over, it's a 2011 sdv6 hse with a mere 360000km with full land rover service history 🙈🤦 I will report more once I give it a full inspection when I w9rk on changing all oils and filters 👍🏻

😅👍Yeah that is a lot of km, especially for a Disco 4. Wow. Hope you don't have to do so much on the suspension. You probably already got your diagnostic tool. 👍🙋‍♀️Vera

@@Vera_and_Christian there are a few silly things which probably won't get repaired, like 3 out of the 5 surround cameras are not working, and the rear entertainment screens also. But apart from a full service and possibly a couple of suspension arms, it's running great! For now 😂

Because it was dripping from a bolt my guess is the bolt has been installed by Land Rover without a sealing washer. You have since removed bolt and fitted a washer and replaced.

Great Video, keep it up guys. When this happened to ours the shaft between the gearbox and the transfer case had very slighlty gone oval so needed replaced. So i am guessing the output shaft had gone out of round from the gearbox and couldnt reseal

My guess for the oil leak is from the multi-pin electrical connector at the RH side of the transmission.

All the oils taste slightly different. Just a touch and you can recognise what is leaking. The cause of the leak is that you have a Land Rover. I had one and it used to leak so much and burn so much I never had to do oil changes. Just keep topping up and change filters as appropriate.

Comment no. 3 The Toyota screws weren't, when tied/closed, applying sufficient pressure to hold the assembly together as needed. This allowed, in specific situations for ATF fluid to gather in a low point and leak.

I think it must be the seal from the gearbox output to the transfer box. If not then it is the gearbox breather hose blocked. Love, Paul.

Firstly say I really like your videos. Thanks for the time and the effort to make them for us... It is a lot of work. Second, I don't own any Land Rover from 1998 on... all my landies are basically Tdi's, is not the same as Discos 3 or 4, I know but I don't drive long distances cause here in Gran Canaria the longest highway is 70kms... lol I still enjoy the videos and you guys as a couple working together! About the failure... Maybe a casting fail during the casting of the gearbox facing the transfer and oil gets the drain hole, and there you go, you have a leak in there.

Have watched rhe video a few more times. The point where you bolt that you pointed to have oil is at a higher point than the oil pan. So the pan is out of question. Its coming from a place higher than that. I have tried to search for known problems /recals and my conclusion is "It is the transfer case housing it self, poorly manufactured, porosity within the housing material" The T shirt is mine. A toyota die hard, who currenly drives a nissan and soon it will have LR sticker

You are correct with that evaluation. See my community post. Good analysis skills you got. You are definitely qualified to drive even to most complex LR and a Toyota is no where close to challenge your skills. Christian
