Coming Home to Autism

Күн бұрын

Food and children are not the best of friends, especially children on the spectrum. A recent review of scientific studies found that Autistic children are five times more likely to have mealtime challenges such as extremely narrow food selections, ritualistic eating behaviors (e.g. no foods can touch), and meal-related tantrums. This episode I talk about how I changed my son's diet to gluten-free and wheat-free, and how these changes helped him incredibly.
Let me know in the comments below, what kind of diet does your child have?

I too have changed the diet of my 2 year old, removed the dairy and glutens,, and he has actually changed a lot. This happened within less than 2 months. He has stopped toe walking, spinning around himself, he hardly does hand flapping, eats well, poops well, and above all responds to his name. ❤️

I have twins and one is autistic I am going through the same thing with her and she is the same age. It is the hardest thing I’ve ever gone through in my life and I’ve wanted to kill my self multiple times because I had no hope of a future. But anyways the only thing keeping my going (and alive) is my relationship with Jesus. He has given me peace and joy and hope and it’s still hard but way better when I put my trust in Him. Hope that helps!

My son is 4 and was just diagnosed with autism. I am changing his diet to gluten free as well, it seems to be helping him. Sometimes I feel overwhelmed with worry. I worry about his diet, his physical health, his mental health, his emotional health, it takes a toll on you. It’s just something I was never prepared for. My sister and I have sons that are age 4, with autism. We have both thought about trying this diet. I’m happy to see your experience on this. I’ve heard so many people do it but have never seen or hear how they go about it. It’s so nice to hear yalls story and the steps y’all took to get to this place now. I wouldn’t say my son is in a diet right now. Though I will say two weeks ago he would eat tons of sweets and live off snacks. For his 4yo wellness visit, they told me he was below weight. It saddened me to hear because he really doesn’t eat much. I decided to take away all snacks. No more sweets and candy. I’ve seen a change. He requests a lot more for food and if he goes want a snack I try and find a big snack I can divide throughout the day and will give small portions of it to give him in between meals. I’ve seen a difference on his food intake. Maybe I will give the gluten free diet a chance too

It is very similar situations where I believe that parents have to try&try give new items, 1 in a thousand which he might choose but my heart blossom. 4yrs of trying there is not more than five thing that he eat but better than nothing. Hope Dylan enjoy more healthy food in the future , wishes to other moms, too. Neya is so cute.

Another great informative video. Qiyam (Key-yahm) my great grandson who I wrote about in one of your other videos weaned himself off of milk. We found out he’d been allergic to it . He continually had a rash on his cheeks and chin. We thought it was a drool rash, but once he quit milk it went away. His diet consists of pediasure through his g-tube and a purée pouch of strawberry, peach and pear or broccoli, apple and pear for breakfast along with his formula. He may never eat regular food because of his texture sensitivity.

6:36 I heard on a Ted Talk about conditioning your brain for study that you can bring a lamp when you study, and only light it when you study. So on the test your brain goes into study mode. Should be transitional(?) to eating. When eating at home to bring with some kind of on/off switched toy or rather, for when eating. And he just takes it with him when you go eat someplace else. Just a suggestion. Might be worth a try. Maybe you've already solved it. Twas over a year ago, this video.

Hi, my 7 yo son was diagnosed yesterday. This has been so useful, I have always noticed how when my son has lots of bread especially in the morning he seems more out of control. I will definitely be considering gluten free. He has always had issues with dairy and I was referred to a dietician when he was a baby. The dietician warned me against using goats milk because it's still mammal milk and has a very high percentage chance of having issues with that aswell. We give him oat, rice, cashew or almond whatever is on offer 😁

Fruit and vegetables contain other nutrients which cannot be completely replaced by a multi-vitamin. Using the "small and gradual" approach, my wife got our fussy autism eating son to eat certain vegetables, e.g. spinach mixed with chicken, pumpkin mixed with rice, etc. And certain foods like blueberries, raspberries, strawberries, banana, avocado, watermelon he eats whole. Also he prefers her cooking to anyone else's as well. Also fruit smoothies can be used to hide some blended vegetable ingredients as well.

You are such a strong mother , I respect you for you hard work and patience as such young mother at the time when you had autistic child. Now, I know very well what you went through because my sisters is going through exactly same things, feeding problem, her relationship with her husband, she doesn’t trust and let anyone else to look after her autistic child , she thinks no body can understand her child as she does. This has affected everyone”s life in the family even mine , I feel sorry for my sister seeing her suffering so much , I try to help as much as I can but Such hard a job. I just think as parents or any other family member you have to accept that life will always be challenging with autistic child in the family , you have to be patient and strong to deal with it and be prepared for any challenge while they grow older.

As per to ayurveda, don't drink water after having any meal.. especially anything contain gluten n carbs.... It will stop the process of digestion and the food get stuck in the walls of intestine... Only after 50 mins of having one should drink water or other liquid...may be this can help in making digestion n gut strong

This is not true! According to Michael F. Picco, M.D. (MEDICAL DOCTOR) "There's no concern that water will dilute the digestive juices or interfere with digestion. In fact, drinking water during or after a meal actually aids digestion. Water is essential for good health. Water and other liquids help break down food so that your body can absorb the nutrients. Water also softens stool, which helps prevent constipation" Please trust medical doctors! I'm begging all of you... As a person with autism, I trust my doctor.

2 of my 5 kids are severe autistic (both diagnosed before the age of 2). They are all about structure in food. I recently stopped gluten and milk products for them both. It definitely has effect in my daughter's body. She has the whole year constipation and since removing it, she finds it easier to poo. She eats a better diet now. I slowly changed it. Step for step. She is 11 and my son is 12. They both can not speak. They could speak both until 14-18 months and they both stopped talking at the same age. I love them. I learn you so much. Autism is something they choose for when they were born, they need to learn something in this lifetime and the people around them aswell. What did you learn especially from your child? But diet is everything I can agree with that. Much love. X

I didn’t breastfeed my first child too I didn’t know how to and nobody told me how much breastmilk Is important for your baby it’s basically food/medicine/vaccine everything combined and my first child is also autistic he’s 4 now . I’ve switched to camels milk and omg let me tell you it’s a game changer my child is like a totally different child, he’s a lot more calmer, responds to his name, makes eye contact and his speech has gotten better aswell, he used to look really pale now he looks alot more better I defo would recommend camel milk. It’s basically a cure for autism .

@@an_overlooked_comment_from Hey! I give him 4 ounces a day and no Autism will not go away however it will improve his/her symptoms but please do your research before you purchase camel milk is really expensive and may not work for everyone. I know of this because in the middle east, it has been used for centuries to treat premature babies and we believe it's the only milk in the world that is close to breastmilk and also scienctifaccly approved as well. The only downside is camel milk has less fat so you will have to make up for it with fatty food so your child isn't losing any weight.

The bottom line Some people feel they’ve benefited from the GAPS diet, though these reports are anecdotal. However, this elimination diet is extremely restrictive for long periods of time, making it very difficult to stick to. It may be especially dangerous for the exact population it’s intended for - vulnerable young people. Many health professionals have criticized the GAPS diet because many of its claims are not supported by scientific studies.

I've got a splash of autism as well, and I happen to be very good at reading body language (seems that way at least, but who's to say one's not deceived by the hope of understanding what's going on around us). And I know this is a bit orthodox and maybe even a bit rude to point out, but it's all for facilitating communication. So here goes: The petting on 8:06 starts of fine and dandy. Your boy raises his head in hope of the incoming pet, his sister nods 'yeah do it', he straightens his spine and raises his head when he's petted (as in pride and enjoyment), and he raises his hand to on top of the pad. And I'm not quite sure why, but it seems like you search for a response and you keep on petting him. He then lowers his hand from his pad in a stroking fashinon (I'm guessing as a hint that the petting should end (best case scenario would be 'in a similar stroking fashion'), but the petting goes on, so he jerks the hand away from the pad, while his sister signals to you 'put it down' with her eyes and head. It's a small thing, but the small things build up one's whole world, right? I often communicate through subliminal signals like this consciously, while most people unconsciously does. Not everyone notice this communication (I guess the stimuli is too low to trigger a conscious response), and I've learned to live with it and see the way other people function. But it's so nice when my communication is seen and my boundaries are respected. I get more relaxed. I've looked about on a few videos during this writing and what I notice is that the subtle communications of autistic children are overlooked by their parents. It's quite easy for most people to see if they know what to look for. I think that understanding this way of communicating is a bit like understanding animals - You have to be engulfed in their world and see the world through their movements - A bit like a tiny sign language. When I think about it sign language would actually be amazing to know for some autism people to know (as well as the people trying to get a read on them ofc ; )
