AUTISM: First Sign at 6 months old

This is Rafael at 6 months old. The first sign of autism for him is hand flapping as a form of stimming. Please know that this is NOT an issue if there aren't MORE symptoms of autism, but there were. The other early signs of autism for him was walking on the toes and echolalia, which is the repeating of speech and sound. He was diagnosed at two with high functioning autism and OCD. I want to show other parents early signs of autism so they can be aware of it and can watch their childs development. No one symptom shows autism, it is always a GROUP of symptoms. I have two children on the autism spectrum (possibly three, as we are getting our girl evaluated for autism) and while a lot of their symptoms are similar, some are not. All kids are different, even the same disability in a child will be different in every child. You have to look for the early signs and begin working with them very young with therapy so they can have the best outcome. My older son with Aspergers is very independent and well-spoken. He had eight years of speech therapy, occupational therapy, and physical therapy. He speaks very eloquently now and is a highly intelligent and independent adult. Most kids with high functioning autism have a high IQ, this is just a disorder of communication and processing! If you feel your child is on the asd autism spectrum, please have them evaluated. It hurts nothing to check, and they won't be diagnosed unless they have symptoms. THIS is NOT labeling your child, this is getting them extra help that they need to function in every day life! Andrea used to live in Florida, until she met Hadar on World of Warcraft. In 2009, Hadar met Andrea in real life, in Israel. They were married April 13, 2010 in the states. His interests right now are cars and trucks, and he loves all toys, but especially cars and trucks! He could literally play with these toys all day long. His bedroom is a car and truck theme. Please don’t see this video and worry your child has autism at 6 months. All this can be normal for babies. My son who is now 3 did all these things and videos like this gave me so much anxiety that he had autism. He’s 3 now and does not have autism.

Yes, no. They all start off doing this, but it's only troubling if they do it all day and nothing else. My other son had already gotten an autism diagnosis so it was likely that this child would as well. It turns out that after evaluations and genetic testing, all of my kids have autism. By three years old, some of the autism signs could fade away and just have been normal development processes, but if they don't, a parent just kind of knows. My husband didn't see the signs until he had to take off work for knee surgery, so the parent who takes care of the child all day should be aware of the signs and just monitor it -NOT WORRY- Autism is not a death sentence. My kids are very amazing, kind, and smart.

We knew from 6mths that our grandson is autistic. He hand flapped, walked on his tip toes, spinning. He was diagnosed at 2 with high functioning autism and ocd too. He is an intelligent 5yr old. When most ppl think of autism the think of the non verbal, global delay, bad behavior etc. My grandson tested 2yrs above his peers. Dont get me wrong he has melt downs, he has lots of sensory issues/ocd traits. But he also masks. Your son looks like an intelligent little man and every child with autism can contribute something to this world. They are such a joy and we wouldnt have it any other way ❤

Masking is something a lot of autistic people do, it means we can act like a neurotypical when we force ourselves to, to fit in with society and seem less ‘weird’ to neurotypicals. Being autistic isn’t something that anyone should worry about or feel negative towards, we just think differently

We filmed every day of his life, he was 6 months old in this video and he was climbing chairs at 8 months. Its real, all recorded with dates.

Thanks man, needed to see that. My gf just told me about hand flapping as a sign of autism and our 6 month old does it all the time. Hopefully it’s nothing and even if it is I’m positive, but I’ve seen my brother struggle a lot because of autism and I really don’t wish it on my girl… we’ll see :)

@@harryw.struwe5395 No one wishes it on their kids. My sister showed signs at 6 months with hand flapping and my mom got her help ASAP and that made a huge difference in her life. Pay attention to your little one and if you see more signs get help ASAP, esp since it runs in your family. Denial doesn’t help the child and it’s their future at stake.

Except babies don't do this for hours everyday and have it make up the entirety of their day, but you should always look for abnormal behaviors and behaviors that are excessive and repetitive, because that is not normal.

My son is now 9 and highly functioning autistic, I also noticed signs of autism at around 6 months old.It's not just repetitive hand movements to look for for child to be diagnosed as autistic. Eye contact has to be atypical together with social interaction, sensory difficulties, speech delay, lack of shared attention, looking at the finger while pointing instead of what adult points at, etc.. These things become more visible when the child grows older but first signs can be noticed as early as 6 months old. Just repetitive hand movement doesn't mean the child is autistic but when the child displays the repetitive hand movements regularly combined with sensory difficulties, lack of eye contact and fixation on one part of the toy and playing with it for hours without sharing the 'joy' with another person then that makes them meet the criteria of ASD. I wish this was taught to the parents as I can see a lot of parents probably panicking watching video like this and suspecting their child displays signs of autism. More education is needed. I'm in the UK and some professionals, such as health visitors or nurses don't have a clue what shared gaze is...Parents generally have no clue how to recognise early signs of autism so well done to this boys's parents! The boy in the is such a lovely boy, very clever. Thank you for creating the awareness of autism. I wish him and his family well❤️

Six months and was very mobile and could almost stand. Or maybe was standing already. He seemed maybe hyper focused. On one thing at a time. Do you have videos with him surrounded by toys? My baby seems to have a very short attention span for each toy or just gets bored easily with each toy.

I think videos like these are tricky. My guess would be that it’s because he didn’t outgrow it that would make ir considered atypical. I think parents have good intentions when they post these things but it also is very tough because handflapping to ANY degree at this age (Until the age of 2-3, per experts) is normal. No trained clinician would use this to diagnose a child at any age. ASD cannot be reliably diagnosed until 18 months. I know he did get a diagnosis but I just want to throw out there, as a mother and a person trained in diagnosing ASD, not to be concerned to all of the parents on here seeking to understand hand flapping. Plus, one thing such as hand flapping is not enough. Lastly, hey, if it does turn out to be ASD, your kiddo will be okay. Autistic individuals lead amazing lives. ❤️

That’s the entire point. That’s why is takes a while for kids to get diagnosed, because the symptoms don’t become apparent until later. Hand-flapping is a form of stimulation that a lot of babies use to calm themself or express emotions. Although, this often goes away around 1 year or so when they start talking and understand communication a lot more (even if it’s just grunting). Knowing what they do now, looking back on this they can tell this was a very early sign that they had no way of knowing.

Yes, and it's not just a few times a day to discover things. He could literally sit for a couple hours doing this and then crawl over to something else and do it for a couple hours. That's the type of behavior to watch out for.

It is absolutely normal, the abnormal part of it is that he did it with everything all day long. Since he was later diagnosed with autism, I thought it important to share this video with other parents of babies who do something repeatedly that is odd.

It's a stim- stands for self stimulating behaivors- it is a calming behavior and common among all neurotypical and neurodivergent people of all ages but neurodivergent people tend to do it more often and more obviously and tend to use less socially acceptable actions as stims (like hand flapping vs twirling hair or bouncing feet or twiddling thumbs) its usually a repetitive action. While i definitely wouldn't call what this boy is doing hand flapping, he is definitely stimming. What is interesting to me about this particular child's swimming actions is how constant it is and how much of his attention it takes up- this is definitely a sign of co-morbid ocd and I'm glad he got that diagnosis as well. [-I'm an Autistic/OCD Mom with a background in child development & an Autistic/OCD daughter]

I have a question. Is that hand movement only happen to autistic babies? I’ve been wondering if I have autistic here and there and I watched home video recently. I was doing that hand movement and apparently I did that a lot as a baby.

No it can happen in any baby. Autistic babies just do it more often. You shouldn’t worry about being autistic unless you struggle socially and have sensory issues.

Your child is completely normal.He is exploring things. Is very important that you play with your boy not just stare at him Please teach him how to play. When children this age play by themselves they tend to get bored easily. Please don't let a doctor tell you there is something wrong when is not.

My baby has been evaluated and she has 50% delays in 3 areas she starts occupational therapy next month. She is 6 months. Her fine and gross motor skills are great, she does a lot of rocking and jumping, and she can’t self soothe she doesn’t make eye contact, and she stares at curtains play with bags, tags & loves lights instead of toys. And she doesn’t like affection and she stress eats. She is extremely smart I would’ve never noticed the signs I just thought it was normal. I only got her evaluated because she can stay up for 5+ hours and she won’t go to sleep til 3am even if I take away her naps or give her naps. She has been doing that since 2 months old. And she has severe acid reflux only with milk, she never throws up baby food. If you notice signs with your child don’t wait please get them evaluated while they are malleable. I’m so glad I caught it early. Please get your child checked out if you have concerns

Wow I came here just to get a view of what to look for with no current concerns and u just listed everything my daughter do and I was thinking this was normal because all babies can be different and she’ll grow out of it 🤷 But your comment just raised red flags and now I’m scared to tell my wife because I know she’s goin to panic 😔

I don't understand what's the autistic sign? My two boys where pretty easy as baby but later we saw things we worried about.. Our oldest was throwing up every day.. multiple times. Nobody knew that was anxiety.. When he was 7 he was diagnosed and now we have two boys with autism and i am also diagnosed, also with adhd. It was a long journey and its not easy!

Flapping is a sign to watch for if it takes up most of their day doing it. Also, rocking is a big sign and repeating words. There's a lot of signs to just watch for and monitor how long they are doing and how long it lasts. It can be a normal thing to stim, even if you don't have autism, but it is definitely something to watch for and be aware of, especially if you have other children diagnosed with autism already. I have found that all my kids have ASD and in our case, it is genetic.

@@FoolyLiving the things you mention comes with classic autism, a more "worse" autism (i dont know how to say it in English) then we have. We all look pretty normal (😉😉) but in our brain many things are so difficult... My youngest son doesnt go to school, he always has a sensory overload, gets mad about many things, he always whants to be home at his computer and with his cat... You always see, on television and on internet, a certent kind of autism, mostly a severe form, but there are many forms..

Yes, some kids are more affected by sensory than others. My son is affected by smells and getting dirty. Sometimes clothing and sometimes noises. For the most part, my kids are all okay with sensory, but I believe in exposure therapy for EVERYTHING. If they don't like something, they get to do that every day for a while until they are okay with it. In the world, when we are not there to protect them, they will have things that they are uncomfortable with, and its our job to prepare them to go out in the world and be able to cope with things. My kids know that they will always have a space place at home, but they are also very challenged when they come across something they are struggling with. Exposure therapy has worked for pretty much every phobia, every sensitivity, and later on when my son was diagnosed with OCD. It's literally been the only therapy that has ever worked for him with autism and with OCD.

My partner is a very high functioning autistic man diagnosed at 10 and most of his siblings, and their children, are autistic as well. Although his sister's children are more what the media presents as stereotypical non-verbal. I've been researching and watching videos to see what autistic signs can look like in infants to toddlers. I'm now pregnant and wanting to ensure if our child is on any part of the spectrum that I can identify key signs. I used to work in early childhood education as a lead VPK teacher, but to be entirely honest we never were taught, atleast in my state, the identifiers or what to do to encourage them.

First sign is lack of eye contact. Babies usually look away from strangers but autistic babies do that to family as well. Second sign is ‘stimming’. Where the baby constantly folds and unfolds his fingers when excited or stressed. Third is not crawling. My grandson did a commando crawl using almost exclusively his arms. Fourth is tippy toe walking. Fifth can be not walking with a normal gait rather a swinging gait.

At what age and how much screen time did he get? Any vinyl or artificial wood flooring in the home? Was he or your other children a geriatric pregnancy? What's the age of the father? Was he breast fed or formula fed?

I have 3 children with autism all born in different countries and flooring materials and two different dads. Normal age pregnancy and father. There's no known cause for most autism. Their autism is genetic and they have EDS as well.

I don't understand what I am missing, my six month old does all the same behavior and the doctors say everything is normal and he passes all screening and tests should I be worried

The only thing that should be worrying, is if they do multiple things like this and they do it for a very extended period of time. Do they rock themselves back and forth all day, do they flip things with this hands all day, do they "stim" all day to the point where it's very curious? That's the only thing to watch for. It's necessary to keep watching their behaviors for this, especially if autism runs in your family. Otherwise, I would not worry about these things as babies are exploring the world around them. My kids all have autism, and why I suspected autism in Rafael, is because he was doing some of the same things as my first child, and having some communication issues. All of my kids are extremely bright - we daily vlog so you can see them in some of our other videos here on the FoolyLiving KZfaq channel. They have what was formerly called Aspergers Syndrome on the autism spectrum.

Just wanted to say, I have 2 autistic sons and it is not helpful when people say, "he looks normal to me" My babies were mostly "normal up until about a year old but there are little things I noticed that were in fact red flags that I ignored because they were so normal in every other way. While hand flapping can be normal at this age, if it is all the baby is doing for hours every day without paying much attention to the parents or siblings then that is definitely a sign of autism. I have seen other videos of this child at an older age and he definitely has some level of autism.

Not making eye contact is just one sign of autism, but it does not apply to any of my kids and all of been diagnosed by a neurologist, with autism.

I wouldn't have thought autism except perhaps for the repetitive finger movement which can also be nothing. He looks at you when you talk, responds back, babbles etc.

In our case, after genetic testing, it is closely linked to the mother. I have EDS and ASD is closely linked to mothers who have it.

It definitely is, the thing is, he was doing it all day long which is a little concerning because I already had a son diagnosed with autism. I thought I could help others with something that I noticed at a very young age. He was also very developmentally advanced in terms of his strength and crawling and walking and standing early - he crawled up a chair at like 7 months and stood up on it. Ive never seen that in my life, except for with my first son! They were a lot alike, except my first son had delayed speech. Rafael had echolalia which is repeating speech.

Such videos if not understood correctly can cause lot of anxiety to parents. To diagnose any condition, physical or mental, qualified people are must. Autism is complex and diagnosis is not made until 2 to 3 years old.

Yeah, this is stimming - which is self stimulation and keeps his mind on track so he can block out the over-stimulating things that are going on around him. It might be nice and quiet to other people, but it can be very overwhelming to have certain things all happening at once and it feels magnified. So stimming is a way for someone with autism to calm themselves and pull themselves away from the overstimulating things that can cause them anxiety.

He was diagnosed with ASD and he struggles with OCD as well. He is in therapy for communication and he's doing really well, but he has some issues with easily melting down still, but he's working on it. He's incredibly intelligent. Thank you for asking.

No, it's very hard to tell, but its always necessary to watch to see how long they are doing the same thing. There are a lot of factors that go into diagnosis, and the younger they are, the more likely chance they have of 'growing out' of certain behaviors. It's just so important to watch behaviors up until 3 years old.

Yes, there are many, many symptoms of autism, and eye contact is just one of them. I believed his eye contact was very good, and still is to this day, but the neurologist disagreed with that when he was diagnosed. It was not a strong factor in diagnosis though. It took around 6 months to get a diagnosis because he also has OCD and the OCD was diagnosed well beforehand. It was actually hindering the autism evaluation. He was diagnosed in Israel and there, they re-evaluate children every year to make sure they did not diagnose incorrectly. They have to have 15 symptoms that are witnessed by the evaluator or neurologist during their evaluations, so they are pretty strict with diagnosing. Eye to eye contact seems to be good in all my kids, but they all have ASD. Some symptoms are hand-flapping, rocking or some type of self-soothing, repeating things they've heard word-for-word, or repeating what people have just said like echolalia - which he had past the age of three, very narrow interests - all conversations end in one subject or are only about one subject - which he does have still at 9 years old. His interests are Minecraft and cats. He has what they used to call Asperger's Syndrome but they have since dropped that diagnosis. I have 2 boys and 1 girl all with ASD (formerly Aspergers Syndrome). My girl is much different than my boys, but they all do share similar symptoms. They are all very unique people though.

@@metalscream3934 They absolutely do, but the main difference with one child with autism and one child without, is the amount of time they spend doing one specific action. In my childs case, which is what I am highlighting in this video, is he did certain things like hand-flapping for hours per day. The same action over and over again.

My son is always moving his fingers digging his fingers his nail in everyone and everything, and at 8 months let's out high pitch screams, our first two children never did any of those things, and although I worry my get angry if i share my concern with her, my youngest of our first two is 14 year's old and I am 42 my wife 40 and our baby was born with a few problems not that is so serious that can't be taken care of, my main concern is that because of our age more mine, that my aging genetic DNA , if that makes any sense, but worry if that could cause autism? I feel stupid even asking that.

I know that can be a concern and there were theories behind that, but I dont believe that at all. My kids do all have a genetic reason to why they have autism. We were involved in a genetic study a couple years after my 2nd son was diagnosed with autism. I have EDS and ASD shares a link between each other. The age concern though, I really don't think is founded and there's literally no evidence of it. I think there are a lot more kids diagnosed with ASD now just because it is more recognized now. Which is good - because imagine feeling 'different' your whole life and not knowing why. There's a lot of women right now that have ASD and have lived their whole life and only get diagnosed in their 20s, 30s, or even 50s! Girls are harder to diagnose than boys because girls will mask their symptoms and they do it very well! All these things at a very young age can just be normal development; until age of three. Just keep an eye on your kids and watch for the signs and see how often they are done. My son did the things in the video constantly - all day. So that makes it more of a symptom than if he did it randomly every once in a while.

@@FoolyLiving its hard to find info that you just gave, if you dont word it right searching, thank you for sharing, my son does do these things all the time when he's awake, he such a happy baby but gets really upset if i walk out of his sight, when i address my concerns to the doctor he said it was too early to tell and kind of brushed it off, i love my boy, my 1st son was more a mommy's boy and still is so our new son is giving the experience i didn't have with my first boy, so the three of us now play and do things together, i just worry because our new son is so much different then our first two kids.

I see someone said that fathers genes cause autism and that's literally not true. In our case specifically, all my kids have ASD because of my genes. I also have EDS and ASD shares the same genes so I have (as the mother) a very high chance of having kids with ASD and EDS together. All three of my kids are on the spectrum with what used to be diagnosed as ASD- Aspergers Syndrome. Just know that its no ones 'fault' because no person is born as a mistake. Enjoy your son as he is, all his differences - it is not a death sentence or a prison. It is just a different set of blessings and gifts that these kids have, and you have to really dig deep to understand them, and they will really surprise you!

@@FoolyLiving thank you for sharing, i truly am enjoying our newest addition, roles haved changed for the Mrs. and me so as soon as she could take as much days off from work before returning to work, the little guy and i have been learning he is just like Mama, he is the boss and i, well, I'm "Not the Mama." I was just concerned that if he did that we would get help for him and us, to learn what could be ahead of us, he is now 10months, and he is still doing if not more of those signs i stated before, i worry not that he would have autism, i worry about not knowing how to grow with him if he did, yeah i worry to much, i didn't with our first two, but i was working and now im a stay at home Dad so i worry alot, it's not easy to not worry when you wake up to being slapped awake by the little monster, to open your eyes to see him smiling and giggling at you.

Where is the autism? You got him evaluated and diagnosed because he moves his hands too much? Let him explore his world and just be the way he is. Stop labeling kids and making them feel like something is wrong with them!

Kids with autism need certain therapies. Parents and caretakers need to observe their kids until the age of three and know some of the signs of autism. Youre effectively saying there is something wrong with people diagnosed with autism, and I do not believe that at all. Nothing is 'wrong' with any of my kids, but they do have autism.
