I did a video before about autism and stimming where autistic children and adults may flap their hands to show they are nervous or exited.
However this didn't fully cover the data and information that surrounds autism hand flapping.
Here I am explaining the updated information I have researched and found out in regards to autism and hand flapping.
One video i recently shared about autistic people and light flickering allowed me to show the flickering of lights in stores and offices etc.
The flickering is in one timing and when you fan your fingers in front of your eyes i chops up the lick flickering to a then act as a constant light but flickering at the same rate as the light.
This is super mind-blowing and really insightful for anyone learning about autism behavour.

That's so interesting. I flap my hands when I get excited about something (especially when it's the end of the day and I've just put my kids to bed 🤣). But you're right, I need it when I get intensely anxious too.

I’m here to learn for my son who is 22. He may have Asperger’s, but yet to get a formal diagnosis. I am avoiding this topic, my wife is too, but I can see my son struggling. He does hand flapping so here I am to learn.

I think it is important to be clear that not all people on the spectrum STIM and not all people on the spectrum experience sensory overload. We are all different and it is best to avoid generalisations.

I was finally diagnosed autistic on Thursday aged 38 (diagnosed ADHD in 2020). I never realised I handflapped until I realised one day I was doing it and how natural it felt and realised I must have been always doing it to a certain extent! But I also do what I call "crab hands" 🦀. But both hand flapping and crap hands are only when I'm standing up. If I'm sitting or lying down it's all about the leg shake and body rock!

Me : stimming while watching video, because impatient to know XD. I though it was because I have a lot of mental energy inside, that I have to transform it into physical energy on the external. I do it when I am anxious, in the waiting, when I don't know what do to, when I am unable to think/process informations, in the bath to create waves. It's really helpful to know it's related to emotions. Thank for sharing. I know INTJs personality type like me, we have difficulty to express our emotions in the same way as most of others personality types (I think a lot of INTJ have Asperger) I am obsessed to learn about myself, curse of knowledge.

My oldest son is 10. He's high functioning autistic, adhd, ocd and sensory integration disorders as well as several medical issues. Hand flapping is one of his main traits he's always done. The flapping gets more intense when he's excited. I love your channel and your videos. It's nice to be able to watch and relate to many things you address. Thank you so much.

My daughter does that but she also puts her hands up close to one side of her head with her wrists stiff fingers part curved like a water fall then flicks her wrist or she will start move each finger while stiffly moveing her head keeping her eyes up and to whatever direction the window is, usually when she hears new to her music or doing her Favorite thing in the world taking a car ride I always said it's her learning movements.

How about making glasses, that counter the flickering of light? Kind of the same with noise cancelling headphones. I know, I know.... If I just kept it to my self, and made tons of money on the idea. But I have forgotten about my thought tomorrow. So there you go. Idea for you.

Never hand flapped, doubt I ever will. I am almost 40 now. I leg shake, ( or chew the hell out of my nails, or lip). For a long time I thought I just had RLS lol. Not like how smokers bounce theirs legs when they are jonesing, but shaking it side to side, its weird. It also pisses off my partner in bed, I have no control over when it happens, but I can kinda see how things will trigger it, emotional wise. The more stressed out I am the more I do it it seems. On the rare occasion I will sway my body side to side, while in my computer chair. Not sure what triggers that one. I also hate places that have that kind of lighting, I just order everything online if possible.

I do handflap, I also crabhand a lot 🦀 but the leg shake is absolutely my thing. My ex-husband would regularly try and stop me and it would drive him insane in bed. My partner only occasionally asks me to stop when it's properly affecting him but he does so in a gentle way and it's more in a "if you're bouncing your leg could you move it so it's not on my sofa cushion" kind of way. I shake my legs to gently rock my entire body.

My daughter is 3 1/2 years old and on the spectrum and i have been watching your videos for over a year and a half now and they have helped me SO MUCH. She was diagnosed as high functioning. I have a question for you: Were you a late-talker? And if so, do you remember at all what it was like before you could get your words out? I feel like my daughter is often frustrated and has meltdowns sometimes simply because she has the desire to communicate something but doesnt have the words to express what she wants to say or how she feels. I wish I could help her more!💔💔💔

And I already have a prototype in my head.... There are a clear and transparent film or plastic, that can turn black when electricity is added. Now it is just a matter of having horisontal strips. Then have a timer chip and a crystal, that switches between two outputs. Have equal numbers of strips hooked up to one output and the other ones hooked up to the other output. Make the circuit really small, and hide it in the arms of the glasses. Use small batteries. All you need is 5 or 3 volt, depending on the timer chip and the crystal. Easy peasy, lemon squizy.... And now I can not sleep. Too many thoughts now.

Not me. Lights like that make me nauseous, and I can only close my eyes most of the way and run. Places that have terrible lighting like that I usually avoid. Hate Costco. I order online. And I have a shopper who will shop and take photos of things and send to me. But I do not find flapping hands useful. In fact, it would probably make me more nauseous.

My brother flaps his hands. I didn't know it was autistic traight but I noticed he did that when happy. A little when he was excited about annoying an inlaw. He stole the other brothers birthday cake. She grabbed the plate. Tug of War. Then Humphrey shoved the cake off the plate with one hand into his mouth. She screamed at him and his face was thinking good and the hand flap was there. I also have an obsession with trying to see my hand or my husband's hand from every angle. I wondered if I am pining for a world that I could see over and under infront and behind all at the same moment. Apparently a girl was saying that she had nde experience. She could see up down infront behind left and right at same time. I must be correct there. I get tired and anxious.

Hm...I think I use flapping my hands in front of my eyes in a completely opposite way. I'm most likely to do it if I'm watching a video which is getting a little boring, or I'm feeling a bit sleepy, and having trouble paying attention to it. If I watch through the flapping fingers, ( which I call 'shuttering') it seems to wake my brain up a ways and improve my focus.

My hand flapping has morphed into handwashing. Before I knew about my autism I thought this was a sort of hygiene complex thing. However I don't have such. Several people spotted this habit I had before I was even aware of it. It is compulsive. I visit the bathroom far more often than I need to so that I can hand wash. PS I got an advert after watching this vid with a promise of "conquering anxiety". This is not possible for autistic people, only management, as we are genetically autistic and it is in every cell of our bodies. Everyone please beware of quackery.

What about when you talk with your hands?? I have always been told I do this a lot And I know I do!! I’ve knocked plenty of stuff over . I saw me in you. I feel like I have had the melt downs, just thought I was a big cry baby. At work, relationships, etc. Always when completely overwhelmed. Something happens and pisses me off, my entire day is done. I will do nothing else but ruminate over whatever it was for days. I feel completely misunderstood by people. ADHD last year, at 54, and something stills feel off. Providers look at my addiction and trauma history depression, and think I’m bi-polar. I’m not. Never had Mania. Depression? One word my life…Blah. I’ve been forever trying to figure out who I am. So is talking with your hands a trait of autism?

Hi, my name is Amber. My son is 16 years old and I believe he’s autistic. He’s in a program right now because of self harm, he does his arm flapping he does the rocking back-and-forth. He sucks his fingers, and I believe it’s a sign of autism but the program that he’s in, she refuses to allow me to get him tested and says that he’s not autistic. . And he also has ADHD. Everything he does is a sign of autism I just don’t know what to do.

Let's take handflapping and try make it sound scientific. A lot of kids handflap. Some adults too. I did it as a child when distressed. Was when I wasn't able to express any other way that was distressed. Nothing exactly scientific about it. When I do something similar as an adult, it's improvised dance to discharge energy.
