Wow, I am so grateful I found this Podcast today! I have been trying for almost 2 years to navigate SSI for my adult autistic son. After watching this, it provided me such an amazing direction and clarity to continue the process and implement a different approach. Thank you for your shared wisdom and hope.

If you apply you MUST let your adult child know and give him or her access. There seem to be very little oversight of how parent use or give their kids access to this money.

You only get Medicare if you have SSDI, not SSI (income based.) Only Medicaid is given before retirement age, and there are rules to them paying it back if you die and don’t leave money for them in a trust.

This was incredibly helpful. I'm waiting about 6months after submitting my application for ssdi. I wish I heard this before I submitted but if I need to appeal and submit more this will be very useful. Thank you!!

i have autism diagnosed. im 19, my parents want to kick me out. i dont feel my age at all, i do not know how to navigate life or live or make money, i dont understand alot of stuff, never did good at school.. i dont know what to do

Am I wrong to think that the SSA will take a proper pro se application for SSI/SSDI as evidence that you are able to work? Also, i live in kentucky and if there are more resources for people with ASD, depression, anxiety, specific to here it would be awesome if someone could point me towards them. I would also be extremely likely to just stop participating jn the process due to burnout. My job history and academic history is a long list of examples of how I get overly optimistic about my ability to fix things about a month before I burnout, either quit or am fired for no-call/no-show, and need months to recover for a retry at the next job. I really really don't want to be a disabled lerson, but the facts are what they are. I don't shower or remember to eat, nor can i tie my shoes well at 30 years of age (I fell down the stairs last week and had a meltdown at the er because I didn't remember tie.my shoes because i was so excited to see the northern lights and my beat friend helper was asleep), but somehow I always convince myself its just a matter of trying really hard. "It will be different this time" is the same thing I say before it's never different. I need help from my best friend and loved ones for basic things, so why would I ever think i could do this terribly difficultn abs stressfulcthing without help.
