This is the only surviving original Auto Union Silver Bullet. It was saved from being crushed at the Zil car factory in Moscow in the 70's by Viktors Kulbergs ,the president of the only antique car club in the Soviet Union ,based in Riga ,Latvia. It's thanks to him ,and the lady from the car factory who called him for help ,that this car exists today. A bit of credit where credit is due!

@@vilhjalmrwt Welcome to Europe - cars aren't cosseted and kept in cotton-wool. They're driven - occasionally very hard indeed. Check Goodwood for cars such as Ferrari GTO actually racing and giving (and being given) no quarter whatsoever.

@shanehnorman
@shanehnorman 5 жыл бұрын
Neither V16s nor supercharging were new in 1939. Marmon produced the first V16 some 12 years earlier, while Cadillac's V16 was sold from 1930. Americans were also (among the) first with supercharging, in 1908. What was new about the Auto-Union was its mid/rear-engined layout, which gave it great traction for hill-climbs, but was problematically tail-happy.
@Loulovesspeed
@Loulovesspeed 5 жыл бұрын
@Shane Norman - The Cadillac V16 had less horsepower (165) than my fuel injected 2 liter 2002 SVT Focus(170)! No other manufacturer in the world had a racing machine like the Auto-Union from a raw power standpoint - 550 HP was unheard of then. Yes, it was tail-happy but with that power and even dual, skinny little bias ply tires, the driver was doing a lot of work keeping it under control. Hans Stuck mastered it better than anyone for hill climbing earning him the nickname "Hans im Gluck" or lucky Hans, as he slid his powerful V16 around dirt corners with straight drops down the mountain!

I look at stuff like that and wonder if only tire technology was at the same point engine technology was at the time, so the cars actually had grip. Power wasn't an issue, that figured that one out. But trying to get it to the ground was another story. Very cool. It must be quite a thrill - and hard work, to drive. But to hear and feel that giant engine behind you when you put your foot down must one of biggest thrills ever.

What years was Dr. F. Porsche present in the Auto Union Rennsport shop? At some point, Porsche was tapped to move to Berlin to work full time on the Peoples Car, KDF project. 1935 or 1936? I know Porsche also visited Ford in Dearborn for some reason. I figure that's why VW's all had wide 5 wheel bolt patterns. Similar to 1936-39 Fords.
