In 1976 in southeastern Oregon's Alvord Desert, Kitty O'Neil set the land-speed record for female drivers. She piloted a $350,000 hydrogen peroxide powered three-wheeled rocket car built by Bill Fredrick called the “SMI Motivator”. It reached an average speed of 512.710 mph (825.127 km/h), with a peak speed of 621 miles per hour (999 km/h). O'Neil's runs reportedly used 60% of the available thrust, and O'Neil estimated that she could have exceeded 700 miles per hour (1,100 km/h) with full power. No disrespect intended for Jessi, I admired her immensely and was a fan of hers and deeply saddened by her passing.

What a hideous bunch of footage they must have created during the last outing. It seems sad that their vehicle retained the design of a jet and devoted little to the safety of the driver. I hope the family and crew do not feel responsible for the loss.

Poor Jessi. I don't think a slammed F104, was quite the right sort of 'car' for 800 mph. Maybe 550 was it's limit and anything further was pushing it too much? Looking at the cockpit shot, it seemed as if the car was controlled via an aircraft stick? Looking at Thrust SSC with a more traditional cut down wheel, maybe the control wasn't quite there? Interesting that the team tried to get her down the right side of the track but Jessi insisted on the left to avoid the previously made tracks. Hopefully the report into her death will be thorough! Women are the future of motor racing, somewhat. Their skills are just as good as the men and they are smaller and lighter in general, meaning better aerodynamics past the cockpit and greater power to weight ratio! Hopefully this won't put off girls taking the sport up and inspire them in the future. RIP Jessi

i agree that american eagle still has a long way to go and once bloodhound gets running then its game over, bloodhound has both a hybrid rocket and an ej 200 jet engine { the ej200 nearly produces the same thrust as american eagle) and should be far lighter and aerodynamic than american eagle. thrust ssc has twin spey's from a british phantom not from a sr71 blackbird

I admire the work and effort that has gone into this project, for years now, but, let's be realistic, the NAE will never get anywhere near the current LSR which was an amazing achievement for Andy Green and Thrust SSC and clearly well beyond NAE's engineering. And, with Bloodhound and others, the target has moved forward another 240mph to 1000mph. Anyway, well done in setting a new woman's LSR record.

Me and a friend built a lakester and raced at Bonneville for a few years so I know a little of all that it takes to race and hopefully set records there. We were there when the Brits had their new JCB diesel streamliner there trying to set a record. You talk about how NAE was out engineered and yes that is true but, what you don't know is the Brits don't have to rely solely on their own money or begging for sponsors, they get boat loads of $ from the government and the best engineers and all the best materials and equipment. I stood right next to that streamliner for hours and looked it over and believe me, no expense was spared it looked like it came right from NASA. And we talked to the crew quite a bit being that they were staying in the same hotel as we were in wendover and they told me how it was funded. Their entourage was at least 30 people for just that one vehicle, it was something to see, they had laptops that hooked right in the side of the car as it moved up the line, at least 2-3 vehicles that were plugged in to it, keeping all the fluids at operating temp, running scans ect. Truly a professional operation all around.

No parachute to slow her down and no real safety features in that carcass of an F-18. No one is smoothing the tracks from previous runs , just try to avoid them. I was watching a guy who had Shell as sponsor and their machine was built for that stunt, specifically, including some fantastic space for the driver. What I see with Jessi seems to be a rickety operation, compared to that guy. I doubt it was as safe as it should have been. That disclosure she signed, before every run was letting the owner of that machine off the hook, in case she wrecked and died. He just needed a human Guinea pig. Not impressed with him.

Most people can't understand what drives people like Jessi to stretch the boundaries of possibility that we as humans impose on ourselves. People like Jessi are the people that create new limits and new dreams for the rest of us and I thank God every day for people like her who live life to the fullest instead of safely growing old and dying an average unremarkable life having done nothing to advance or change the world. No time to react and with type of machine she was driving, you don't put roll cages in a fighter jet because they can eject, this one just happens to be on wheels, that jet engine and the entire unit probably weighed 10,000 lbs, remember, this has about 50,000 HP now. That's insane power to be driving, even in the air, its a 50 50 chance now. She's a women that had guts because I don't think I could do that. 200 MPH is fast enough with me behind the wheel, that's scary as heck. So more than double that is WHICKED FAST !!! My heart goes out to all there that was the witnesses to it, but most of all, it took 9 minutes to get to her which had to be super hard to pull up from where it started, then ended up at those speeds.

@@JR-kr1lv The F104 actually had an ejection seat that ejected out the bottom of the aircraft. It probably killed more pilots than any other aircraft because of the short wingspan and the downward ejection seat.

Definitely got their work cut out for them just to match SSC's record. I don't think they're delusional enough to think that that 1000mph record is in the wheelhouse of capability. Got to hand it to them though,...shoestring budget and yankee ingenuity at it's best. I doubt they will get the record this coming August, but they also haven't EVER had the budget that Richard Noble has. In and of itself,...I think that's what makes the NAE effort so exceptional.
