Battery electric vehicles might be dominating the news but it's the internal combustion engine that will still be powering the majority of new vehicles for the coming decade and perhaps even beyond. Hormazd Sorabjee - Editor, Autocar India - and Sergius Barretto - Managing Editor, Autocar India - discuss carmakers and the paths they've taken to keep the internal combustion engine firing on all cylinders. Welcome to Episode 10 of the Autocar Deep Drive Podcast powered by Kotak Mahindra Prime.

Finally someone is talking about Engines rather than safety. People need to realize that engine is equally important as safety. If people complain about safety in suzuki, then they should even complain about engines in Tata. Nobody wants to burn their money in service centers. Indian brands need to know that how their service centers are looting money by adding unwanted things during service.

Also to note : electric doesn't make sense for performance/ purpose built two wheels, where weight is a big factor , either on track or off road. Battery technology isn't advanced enough to keep the weight down and offer range for recreation activities outside city limits. Yes electric scooters make alot of sense as it's limited mostly within cities as it's primary purpose is only comuting for point A to point B.

Suzuki has an edge in petrol engine development. More so, the Japanese manufactures are pioneering the hybrid tech with Atkinson cycle petrol engines. I feel these will still be popular for 2 decades at least.

Just feel that Ford produced such state of the art engines way ahead of time as dragon series 3 cylinder which was a lot better than many 4 cylinders including their own. Not just good efficiency and emission norms, it had class leading power torque figures and high revving nature with brisk performance. Tough luck Ford, now Maruti has done a similar engine bragging about every single thing about the Z series which you folks didn't do enough. Rip small diesels and small 4 cylinders ! - From a Zen MH410 fan 🙃

29:45 No doubt 1.5 iVTEC is best in the NA category but there is a need for turbo engines..Not offering it just because it's expensive seems like an excuse because brands like VW/Skoda are offering it right from base variant in their cars and other brands are offering it in their Compact Suvs at much lesser price..Honda should change their game before it's too late.

Tata 's 1.2 L & 1.5 L GDI will address their engine issues and these two may be their last engines, coz the company is investing more into electric, H2 powertrains and so on.. Tata have strong plans for their future powertrains. But as per me, they should also invest into one more mpi (1.2L)motor which can power a wide range of cars in under 4m category (coz the 1.2L GDI will be more expensive) . Investing into a 1.2L mpi in 2024 will definitely make sense for tata motors. When it comes the performance of revotron petrols, they aren't so refined and power delivery is so so and reliability is okay..the reason for these issues is the age of that engine, the revotron was introduced in 2014. They have used the max. of that engine without much investments. Yeah, hope tata will address this in the future 🤞🏼

Was great listening to you both, especially Hormazd, I've just moved from City NA (1.5 iVTEC/CVT) to Carens Turbo Petrol (1.5/7DCT) . I must say I miss the flexible nature of that gem of Honda tech which almost sang in part throttle. Whereas turbo petrol in Carens is tuned for fuel efficiency and it's almost dead in lower rpms needs a lot of stick to be woken up and when it wakes up it's gets a move on. I was forced to move to Carens as my family outgrew the City.

@18:20 I believe Tata should have gotten some concessions from Fiat because they are in a JV, not only that they have manufactured engines for them and also they are their long time customers as well. So, Tata should have been given some leeway to modify those engines for their requirements. Just like what Aston Martin is doing with Mercedes AMG engines. (Caveat here is they got this permission post negotiation with Mercedes).

In my opinion, a hybrid is a better option overall in terms of mileage than an EV since I'm not ready for an EV.I'm still driving my 2014 Mitsubishi Pajero strong after 3,10,000 kilometers! EVs will never be able to match it. I think Indians need to understand how bad Electric Vehicles are. Everything is dictate controlled. If a car company decides, they can brick your car. If they decide, they can install software on your vehicle that drains the battery faster, similar to a phone. And yes, these practises may not be happening now, but in the future, it's guaranteed this will happen, to artificially boost car sales. Companies need to please investors and not consumers.

how reducing ones car battery life through companies by installing different malfunctions in their own cars will boost car sales??? Rather it will harm companies reputation,,, as in long term review,, in near future, market will adapt to battery functions and its maintenance like a local shop would be able to rectify issues... Every time competition evolves around the technology itself....

IC engines are history - is there any point in developing anything new here? Even if EVs don’t penetrate the Indian market to that extent, there is hardly any point in wasting money on new IC engines, as ever tightening emission norms will make this tech redundant. Most manufacturers will just carry on with the existing tech - developing anything new in ICE is like throwing good money after bad...

Given the size of our country and the long distances we love to travel on our holidays, ICE will be there for a while. Absolutely correct when you say we will be the last men standing on the ICE engines. It is important for manufactures to concentrate on the demand of this country and not impose Global Strategies to India.

Since no company is investing in new engines, why they cannot pick best engines and use them in all their cars.for example 1.5 diesel from hyundai.2.2 diesel from mahindra.1.5 petrol from maruti or Hyundai etc.

india being a land of marvellous engineers and engineering colleges producing greatest minds, its a pity that we cannot develop a transmission of our own, like ASIN or a engine like that of Fiat or a world class made in India transmission running global cars.

It will never happen. Our country believes in made in other countries products more than made in India. Plus, majority of the engineers are looking for jobs in sectors where they can earn quick money. How many of them wants to be in the core industries? Automobile/automotive industry is so small scale it's hard for freshers to take a piece of it. Our country also doesn't support automotive enthusiastic culture. That is the reason media talks about 10" screens inside a so called "SUV" rather than talking about how much power it makes. So, bottom line, our country is never going to make any original engines, or cars like mazda miata which are fun to drive, or awesome transmissions, or aftermarket performance parts.
